In grim future, BACON EAT YOU!

Silly hyperbole aside, this is interest.

Scientists have successfully resurrected pig brain cells, four hours after death.

Yeah, I read that article earlier. Brains from pigs that were slaughtered for their meat revived to an extent.

However, they were keen to state that there was no electrical activity in the brains whatsoever, so cognitively nothing going on.

Still a bit grim really, but it may have ramifications in the understanding of disease and injury to the brain caused by lack of oxygen etc.

Not sure I'd be happy doing it though. I just thought about this creature being revived, to relive it's slaughter again, before sinking back into oblivion. Bit of a gak thing to do to another living creature.

Animals in modern slaughterhouses are rendered unconscious prior to being killed, usually via a direct electrical shock to the central nervous system. They feel nothing as they are out cold before any pain from the shock could register, and they are dead long before they could wake up.

Meat animals have more assurances of a painless death than death row inmates.

I have worked in one of the biggest pork processing plants in the East Coast, and can verify that the pig is indeed zapped unconscious ( and usually paralyzed ) before slaughter. And the killing itself is so quick that even if the pig woke up, they wouldn't have time to register what happened.

This is still creepy to me though. It could lead to amazing breakthroughs in the medical field, or we can have the zombie apocalypse. Who knows. Down the road this could even provide evidence of the human soul.

As someone with dementia on both sides of the family, I'm particularly intrigued as to whether this might, eventually, lead to a treatment akin to jumpleads for the brain. Get those synapses firing once again.
