Hello!

I'm looking into playing a civil war table top game, I'm thinking I want to use 1/100th scale like flames of war or 1/72 Because it's easy to get / cheap to buy!.
My main reason for using smaller Minatures is saving space and from what I understand most Historical games for massive battles, 3-4 models represents a much larger force, I personally would rather see the much larger force.
Can anyone help me identify a fun and easier to pick up rule set, so far I only know of black powder glory hallelujah. Is it as simple as the standard black powder game?
I more into the diorama aspect of the game and the immersion, I'm not a fan of competive gaming, and I plan to build both "sides" / armies so that I don't have to find an opponent using the same size models.

Am I shooting myself in the foot, with my model choice of size? Anyway! For Historicals all I have played is flames of war and bolt action, and would love to get into rank and file. Also looking at getting into one day, Napoleonic or revolutionary War.
That's why I am leaning towards black powder.

I'm located in California, Riverside county area if there are any groups.
Thanks
FMJ

Assuming you mean the American Civil War, its not something I game personally but have come across a few rulesets over the years.
Black Powder is pretty easy and accessible (thus easy to get opponents for).
Fire and Fury has a pretty decent rep and is build for larger scale games (Divisonal sized).
Fields of Honor is alright but isnt ACW exclusive (the rules are 18-19th century warfare in general and contain lots of British Empire stuff).
Volley & Bayonet is scale agnostic and pretty easy to pick up but has a mixed rep.
Piquet: Hallowed Ground is a very easy ruleset to pick up that covers a large variety of wars and also features three different scales of game (Coy. Batt. and Divisonal).

To answer all your questions in one go though, your best bet is to find what groups are local to you and what they play! There are groups that will only play 15mm, Warlord, 6mm or whatever. Best place to find groups is undoubtily Facebook.

This company makes 15mm figures and also makes an inexpensive rule set. You should try them. Personally, I use Black Powder and the Glory Hallelujah book. But then I prefer 28mm.

1/72 is a great scale for historical minis. You can find multiple sets from multiple manufacturers on just about any period. Take a look at the Plastic Soldier Review website to see the sprues before you buy.

The ruleset you decide on should be based on the level of combat you find interesting. Do you want to see line, column, double line, skirmish formations? Or would you rather refight the entire Battle of Antietam all at once?

Here are some thoughts:

Big Battles:
Johnny Reb
Black Powder
Across and Deadly Field
Longstreet

If you want to play some battles while you are scaling up your forces:

Rebels and Patriots
Chosen Men
An Uncivil War
Sharpe's Practice

Enjoy researching these.....

I'm hoping to do a Longstreet campaign this summer with 6mm paper models.

I picked Longstreet because I like the way campaigns work. You start with three infantry regiments, a cavalry regiment, and an artillery section. You fight a certain amount of battles per year of the war, and your regiments gain experience and lose bases. Both players have their own decks of cards that they can use to affect the battle, and it changes with each year of the war.

I'm looking forward to playing it!

Thanks for all the input

I would say i'de be happy with fighting Culps hill. Not the entire Gettysburg Battle.

I'm very big on the diorama aspect of table top games I do like it when. 1 Canon = 1 Canon.
If that makes sense?

Have you considered 6mm? Baccus is one company that makes 6mm ACW, they also have a rule set. Bases with a bunch of 6mm guys in the correct formations can look really good.

I've been told allot about 6mm but painting and modeling and the dioram aspect is one of my favorite

Im considered playing 28mm battles at a little round top, or Culps hill scale.

But I do enjoy my time and money, so I was looking into 15mm and 1/72,
Was curious about quality of models really.

Its highly variable for all scales, there are some absolutely dire companies and some fantastic ones. Do you have anyone in mind specifically?
