I recently made a blog entry and it got appended to the last post (also mine). This counts as an edit? Because the post didn't show in the 'Recent Threads' forum. That makes sense for merely edited posts, but when a new post gets appended to a previous one, that doesn't seem right.

Is there a work around to the auto-appending of posts to force a new post?

Interesting. I wonder if changing the subject line would force a new post rather than appending.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Testing if editing the subject title forces a new post.

No it does not. The new subject line is lost and it's just appended.

Having a work around to force a new post would defeat the purpose of the auto-append feature.

Posts made in the DCM forum don't auto-append. This is a perk of being a DCM and using their dedicated sub-fora. However they are expected to not abuse the feature by spamming posts.

I understand that the feature is there to prevent 'spam' or multiple short posts in a short period of time, but if I'm doing a P&M blog I'd like progress photos to bump the thread, which doesn't happen if it's auto appended. I can see why editing wouldn't bump the thread, but appended posts are generally new material.

The auto append is there to stop spamming threads with multiple posts, as you guessed. It's time limited - I think about 12 hours, but can't remember for sure.

There actually is a workaround - posts that include an attachment don't auto append. So if you attach your progress image to the post instead of just image linking it, it will show as a new post.

Oh I forgot you could do that.

Why does the attachment force the new post?

No idea. Might be to avoid breaking the database somehow. Might just be an odd glitch that wasn't worth the effort to 'fix' since it doesn't hurt anything. I don't recall if Lego's ever said one way or the other.
