How do?

Something a wee bit different this time. Having recently, therefore somewhat belatedly, discovered YouTube beyond just watching old music videos. There’s a lot on there, and once you find something on your wavelength, very enjoyable.

And I want to know what you tune into. Now, so as to avoid hassling the Mods, Nothing Political Please. No political commentators or ‘alternative news feeds’, regardless. Let’s just, not go anywhere near there, yeah? Sure we can all find that on our own.

As ever, some to start. I won’t embed, just post the link and a description to save loading troubles for future readers. I suggest all follow suit, but only suggest. You do you!

So.

James Townsend & Son - 18th Century Cookery. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=92xHoNQQ45s

I like popular history. I like cooking. I like finding recipes I can cook at camp, for added LARPy depth. And this feed is pretty excellent. Presenter, James Townsend, is affable and factual, his style very welcoming and pleasingly informative. Whilst colonial and independence era America centric, it’s a time period of interest to anyone of European descent in terms of shared history. And just overall well put together and enjoyable.

I mostly watch the cookery videos (the bulk of their fare), but there’s also, well, lifestyle stuff. Like how oil skins are made and that. Very enjoyable all in all.

Kirioth. A 40k news and opinion feed. https://m.youtube.com/user/KiriothTV

Fog up, I’ll warn you he uses swearies in his videos. Not in a remotely edgelord way. Just as part of his vocab.

I seem to be of a similar mind to him, so take my endorsement with that a known. But I find he’s pretty level headed, and likes to be as factual as he can, very rarely falling to hyperbole. Always got time for his vids.

Minty Comedic Arts. A movie info feed, featuring ‘interesting stuff’ about older movies. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-AWmzJffDRA

Again, some swearing, but not in an edgy way, just a general vocab.

Never fails to entertain, and covers a lot of films, typically ones I greatly enjoy, or soon seek out. He also looks like my mate Adam. Down to the cadence of speech and physicality. But it’s not Adam!

How about you peeps?

I enjoy a lot of stuff on the YouTubes, but a couple in particular are Lindsay Ellis, who does some really good technical analysis of films (and more recently, literature):

And more importantly, Loading Ready Run; they’re a Canadian comedy troupe who have also evolved into computer and tabletop game streaming (and other things). You may know them from the “Friday Nights” series on Magic the Gathering, but they do a tonne of other stuff:

As for who I'm subscribed to:
James Townsend & Son: 18th century cooking
How to BBQ Right:: Malcom Reed teaches you how to BBQ right
Jim Sterling: video game commentator and reviewer
Kent Rollins: Cowboy Cooking
Dianzi Xiaoge: traditional Chinese cooking in a rural area of China, and I want that giant wood-fired wok she uses

Um, yeah, quite a few cooking-related channels there.

I like lots, but my favourite two are Hatfilms, and Fact Fiend. Both British, generally laddish banter, the former being video games and other nonsense, the latter being a banterish "professionally unprofessional" take on many of the weird facts of the world, media, and fiction.

I do like more intellectual and serious stuff too, but I watch Youtube first and foremost to relax and enjoy it - hence the above!

Eckhart's Ladder: Interesting discussions about various Sci-fi universes. He mainly discusses things from Star Wars, but ultimately does some "Who would win?" and "Who has the best ____?" type videos comparing a lot of different franchises including Star Trek, Halo, Warhammer 40k, Mass Effect, and more.

FamilyJules: This guy is awesome with his guitar, playing lots of fan favorite music from various video games.

The Glacial Geek: Fun Warhammer 40k content including battle reports for both regular 40k and Kill Team, as well as discussion about the state of the game.

Robbaz: A Swedish video gamer who has way too much fun playing various offbeat games including Kerbal Space Program, Euro Truck Simulator, Planet Coaster, and more.

SoloDoubleJ: I watch this guy mainly to pick up pointers on how to play SMITE better. He's pretty good at it and has good ideas for character builds.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

AngryJoe Show: As far as game reviews go, he's definitely one of the more impartial reviewers and though some of his skits can be a little on the cringey side, he's great on providing an in-depth look at a game and calling out on a lot of the questionable business practices of microtransactions and unnecessarily grindy aspects of modern gaming.

StrikingScorpion/TabletopTactics/WintersSEO: The trinity of battle report guys for me, not only great painted models, variety in army and tables but very well paced and filmed. Tabletop Tactics in particular has a very good rapport and banter in their crew and I could pass the hours away hearing them go on. Honorable mention goes out to SkaredCast as well, he's just a little lower since he has mainly Aeldari for his army and thus can't really match the studio stuff the other guys do.

ProZD: Lots of funny voiceovers and relevant tongue-in cheek satire on video games and anime.

Mega64: Lots of great video game skits and their DBZ shorts are some of the best I've seen.

Videogamedunkey: Doesn't post as frequently as he used to, but when he does its invariably worth it,

Manslayer: The creator of Gamerpoop, lord of hip dance moves in Skyrim and Fallout, he makes sure that the golden age of Bioware and Bethesda games keep on giving with his parodies. It says something about the quality of their recent games if he makes barely any gamerpoops on them in comparison to their earlier titles.

Some of the dead channels but great for revisiting is definitely Filthy Frank and OneyNG. The former for some truly landmark original content, and the other with his distinct animation and style that a lot of animators I noticed are inspired by (particularly DBZ/anime parody animations).

I watch a lot of rockhounding, paleo weapons, fishing and tool/craft/blacksmithing videos from lots of different tubers, couple of better ones are,

Rokkit kit, Kayak fishing - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClSn_RiudM3oTxnrNg4QX3Q

For rock collecting I've just started watching this guy as he a bit more local to me - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvl86XFshpCzzQjWqyi15sQ

My daughters are the ones that do the constant youtube binging, not I. That being said, there was a user named Buffalax that used to subtitle non-English music videos showcasing what English words it sounds like they're saying. Some is absolute gibberish which is entertaining enough, some is so crystal clear and form full on sentences that are almost wet yourself funny. At least to me, anyway.

I don't turn away when my 6 year old watches Collins Key, the videos are usually quite funny. And the two sisters that do the bath bomb episodes, Just Jordan and All Around Audrey or something around that, pretty funny to watch them panic as an overzealous bath bomb exceeds the volume of their container.

I'm surprised, but probably shouldn't be, at how many other Dakkanauts enjoy Jas Townsend & Son

Am giving the others a whirl, one by one. Factfiend I enjoyed. I'd describe it less as laddish banter (which can often mean a lack of actual wit replaced with casual 'isms') and more as 'Pub QI'. Genuinely interesting facts that amuse and entertain, but aren't likely to particularly enrich one's life.

I've become a big fan of Drachinifel. He does videos on naval history with a strong focus on the dreadnaught era, but he does stray into earlier eras from time to time. What separates his channel from others doing the same thing is his English sense of humor. Sadly, a number of his earlier videos use a computer voice and lost a lot, but he's slowly remaking them with his own voice and they're much improved for it.

Probably the best ones involve his descriptions of naval battles - Jutland, Operation Cerberus, and the crown jewel for humor; the Battle of Samar and the exploits of Taffy 3. Where a couple destroyers charge a battleship-heavy task force because 'of course they do'...

The History Guy is a fun channel for historical trivia.

Knowing Better is also fun for educating yourself on the topics he touches on. HOWEVER, he does touch on politics from a moderate standpoint in some of his videos, so extremists on both sides will not enjoy those particular shows. (Yes, in the comments he's been accused of being both a 'libtard' and a 'conservatard'... for the same video.) You have been warned. The only reason I mention him is because he does an excellent non-partisan analysis of the Bill of Rights which everyone should see.

Shadiversity, Skallgrim, Metatron, and Scholagladiatoria all do nice work about ancient and medieval history and/or fantasy, with extra emphasis on weapons and fighting techniques. Granted, some much more credibly or realistic than others...

BazBattles does nice graphics based recreations of historical battles, mostly ancient but with a scattering of medieval and even WWII...

MilitaryHistoryVisualized does graphic-based analysis of various military historical issues as well. Lots of deeper content there, going behind the tactics and strategy and into the political and logistics of various situations as well.

Sadly, the past year-and-a-half have forced me to walk away from all the Star Wars channels I used to watch.

On the lighter side, Simon's Cat is fairly simple animation of the trials and tribulations of living with cats. And theslowmoguys film lots of rather silly hijinks with their slow-motion cameras for our entertainment...

A lot of people have mentioned this before on dakka, but I do like watching Forgotten Weapons.

I'm not a gun owner, never have been, but I love seeing old muskets getting blasted off.

And one of its plus points is there is absolutely ZERO gun politics. No pun intended Just old guns, rare guns, and interesting things about how guns work.

Military history is a hobby of mine, so it gives you insights into how these old weapons were used.

Marcowargamer is an excellent channel for board games, RPGs, etc etc highly recommended

Not a channel as such, and non-British dakka members probably won't know what the feth I'm talking about, but I just like watching old game shows:

Bullseye with Jim Bowen the Crystal Maze, the interceptor, the Krypton factor, and old shows like Minder, The Professionals, The Sweeney, The Saint (pre-Bond Roger Moore)
