Played my first game today (granted, only 500pts) and I had a unit of squig herders. exactly what is their role here? i lost 2 in combat and the other 4 ran off after battleshock. WTF? Bravery 3....how the hell do you even mitigate that?

Well they usually explode when they run away and cause mortals wounds.

Units within 12 of the gloomspite scenery piece don't take battleshock tests. You can also use inspiring presence command ability. Gloomspite has the easiest way to get command points of any army. You get an extra one if you are in the light of the moon each turn. (the gloomspite allegiance ability) and there is a command trait that gives your general an extra one at the start of the battle.

yeah, of the 3 squigs, none rolled a 4+ lol.

Didn't think about the Command Points. I noticed that I really wasn't using them much so that's a good idea.

I had the scenery but it's really hard to keep within 12" (especially since it's wholly within)

i guess they are just simply ment to tie up 1 wound model units and then die to get the chanse for the 1MW.
as sutch i think the unit work better at max numbers.

but then again, all squig units overall has low bravery.....
