Terrible news. From reading the BBC article and others it seems he started the fire on the ground floor, and the stairwell collapsed as people were trying to make it to the roof. He'd accused the studio of plagiarism.

Nothing. Good things do not automatically accrue to good people; bad things do not automatically inflict bad people. Things happen at random sometimes... especially when you're dealing with someone psychotic enough to burn down a building and kill people doing it.

The company was not wiped out, that's phrasing is a bit harsh. The arsonist targeted Studio 1 of the company (I think this one is mostly focused for drawing key/inbetween frames, plus archives). They have about 150 to 200 employees in total, the rest are one train station away (I think general office work, pre production and post production is there). And they have subsidiaries/sister companies. About 20% of the company died and another 20% were injured in the fire/explosion. Meaning a significant chunk of the company might be in no working condition (depending on severity of their injuries). Most of their directors seem to have been at a different location.

But nearly everybody at this one studio was affected by this attack (30+ dead, 30+ injured, about 10 mostly safe, about 70 people in total). From what I read the arsonist also cut off escape routes at ground level. It was an old building with only two staircases. And they had apparently deactivated their security badges/control today for some reason (event/meeting) so that people could flow easier through the building.

Apparently the arsonist thought they plagiarised some of his work, there are some strange rumours about him being from Japan's equivalent of 4chan and that it might either be about a phrase or a song. But those details/rumours were rather vague and with zero secondary sources besides the general plagiarism thing, this seems to have been confirmed multiple people (but they might all have the same source).

Something like that, there's been not much official information.

Some people have probably seen characters and moments from Clannad, Kanon, K-On! and Haruhi Suzumiya used in memes across the internet without ever seeing the series they came from. Violet Evergarden and Beyond the Boundary were two of their more recent works. Their film adaptation of A Silent Voice (on Netflix right now) was nominated for numerous best film awards and is a fantastic movie about forgiveness and acceptance.

It's a tragedy for the industry.
