Hi All,

II have a question about Terrain and fly keyword. How does terrain and fly work? so here's a few instances to go on:

A) a model with a 160mm base with fly moves over a terrain piece that is 5" high bit slightly small than its base. can it end its movement on top of the terrain? on the edge of the terrain (climbing) or is it simply unable to end its move on the terrain completely?
B) if this model does end its move on top of the terrain does it mean any non flying models must charge up the terrain (using movement climbing to reach it in combat.
C) can a non fying model climb scenery such as trees if it has a larger base than the tree?

unfortunately the rules are not super clear here. the only things we have that i can see is the following:

FAQ
Q: Are models allowed to climb a terrain feature such as a
Fortress Wall?
A: For simplicity and ease of play, the rules allow any
model to climb any terrain feature. If you wish, you can
only allow models to move to places that they could
reach ‘in real life’, but it will require a certain amount of
common sense in order to make such a house rule work

Q: If the height of the terrain feature exceeds a model’s
movement, can it be climbed over multiple turns? Can a model
run up a terrain feature?
A: Yes to both questions. A model may need to spend
several turns climbing an especially high terrain feature
(you will need to remember how far it has climbed each
turn, and measure distances and visibility to or from
that model as if it were in that location).

Q: If I charge a model on a terrain feature, and there isn’t a
space on which the charging model can stand, can it still make
the charge move?
A: Yes. As noted above, for simplicity and ease of play,
models are assumed to be able to climb up any terrain
feature, and can finish a move at any point when they do
so (you will need to remember how far it has climbed,
and measure distances and visibility to or from that
model as if it were in that location).

Core rulebook

FLYING
If the warscroll for a model says that
the model can fly, it can pass across
models and terrain features as if they
were not there when it makes any
type of move. Any vertical distance
up and/or down is ignored when
measuring a flying model’s move.
It cannot finish the move on top of
another model.

it can be interesting particularly with all the scenery now flying about and some big base dudes such as vorgaroth and tamurkhan.

Hi,

Care to elaborate please? as the questions are given as scenarios with multiple questions.

The question seems to be: "can I park a flying model on top of scenery that no one else can get to".

Ninth answered correctly. They can park on top of things. Models can charge up the terrain vertically.
The size of the terrain trying to be perched on does not matter.

A titan troll on a motorcycle can vertically charge up a finger sized 1000' pillar to get to you. It will just take some time getting there.

it can read like that but no i would always say everything is chargeable. its actually wondering how you can counter... the opposite mindset. you cant fly up there because i cant charge you easily but you must use a walking monster to climb over that tree to reach me. or unfortunately you cant place your base so no charging me in a wood sort of shenanigans. also don't forget this is AOS no motorcycles ... that i know of.....

Some people feel that if you cant place the model then you cant be there... but its not how it reads to me so i wanted to open it up to a larger more knowledgeable group.

You are reading it correctly. Just because a model can't be placed there safely doesn't mean they can't be there. So you can have three models fighting on top a tree. You can have a model standing on top of a pillar, with another model stabbing at his ankles while he hangs onto the side of it.

If your group decides they don't like that and house rules it? totally up to them. But this is the rule as written and thanks to the FAQ, as intended.

Yeah. I posted what I posted because every campaign season one of our more competitively bent players tries to do something like this where he'll land flying miissile units somewhere and claim no one can get to him, he's immune.

Rules as written the game is a huge abstraction that often makes no sense in terms of intuitive or what you would expect things to be able to do, but that I'm told is a feature and not a bug.

IMO a lot of times abstraction is better than writing out rules which end up complex and unfun.

There's a point where it gets just as silly and unfun IMO.

Its true. i would not play that way ever. I prefer to say everything can charge anything. it makes sense if someone is on top of a tree to say yeah you have to reach him but you can charge him.
