So is averland sunset spray not coming back. Just as about to start an Imperial Fists force and am at a lose what to do else. I’ve heard it’s difficult to get good results just base coating over another primer. If I have to I will but what colour is best and how many layers of yellow. Also is contrast any good for IF?

Try Contrast Iyanden Yellow over Wraithbone spray. I got a nice yellow with it on my Goliaths, though that was on much smaller areas than a full marine.

I’ve heard contrast doesn’t work for bigger models so won’t my tanks and dreads look bad?

Possible. It doesn't work so well on large areas, but I'm sure that if one is careful it is possible to get decent finish. You might want to find some tutorials on that.

Another option is Army Painter yellow spay. I used it on my knights. It has really crappy coverage though, and you basically need to undercoat with a decent white(ish) spay first. However, if you do that it works fine.

how's the vjelijo sun yellow work?

I'm a little annoyed they removed the coloured sprays, they where a nice cheat, but apparently GW thinks we all want to use contrast as our only "quick trick"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Vallejo's new colour spray should be close - worth a try. Army Painter does not have a suitable substitute (their yellow spray is a completely different shade - much brighter).

mildly irriating that GW gets rid of yellow spraysand I develop a need for one, I'm not 100% sold on contrast paints yet

If you know someone with an airbrush, contrast paints will shoot. It will come out like an ink or filter, and tint the model the right color, but it won't do the pool and settle gradation shading thing you get with a brush. You will have a vehicle with the right shade of yellow and the highlights you would normally get from the undercoat peaking through the contrast paints, but you'll have to add in your shadows with a wash. At this point you can selectively use a wash or the contrast pain to selectively add the darkness to your recesses.

According to Vallejo, Sun Yellow is closer to Flash Gitz Yellow than Averland Sunset (at least for the Game Color version of Sun Yellow).

I’ve seen a video where someone was able to get a nice, smooth coat using a sponge application of contrast paint.

It never ends well

I mean, yes, any yellow spray could also give you a solid base for a simple wash-over method to get to your colour of choice. I'd definitely find a review or pics of the Vallejo spray and see how close it is. Averland has that nice cheddar, almost-ochre colour though which is why it was so nice.

experimented with the iyandan yellow cotrast paint and I think this is the way to go for painting yellow minis. at least smaller then vehicle ones

your mind

You should look at INSTAR paints.
They have a great match.
I had a buddy with that army -
we ordered him 100ml of the INSTAR equivalent to Averland.
Once fully finished, 99% identical.
