I've been thinking a bit lately about the video games I'd like to see made, games that either don't currently exist or I'm not aware of. Hopefully it will spark some discussion. Feel free to add your "wishlist" too. Also if you're aware of any games that fit the bill I'd be glad to hear what they are.

X-Com for Fantasy
There are plenty of X-Com-like games out there, either inspired by or pretty much copies of the original. I'm not aware of any that have captured the magic in a Fantasy setting though. Squad based tactical RPGs are out there in abundance, though I'm looking for one that focuses on the strategic side (base building, researching, etc...) as much as on the tactical.

The only game I'm aware of that fits the bill is Massive Chalice. I haven't tried it though, mainly because from what I've seen I'm not sure it's all that good. I might give it a chance next time it's on sale on Steam though.

An RPG set in the Warhammer Old World
Sure, some of the best games in existence, let alone best RPGs, are set in a Fantasy setting, some more and some less similar to Warhammer. Still, I'm looking for a big budget outing that uses the Warhammer licence. Kind of like what Total War did for Warhammer strategy games.

As an aside, I've put about 16 hours into Total War Warhammer (the first one, with all DLC) but I just can't get into it. Maybe I'm just not getting the hang of the empire management side of it. The fact that it's the only Total War game I've ever played probably doesn't help.

Necromunda
Luckily for me this game is already in development. I haven't played the video game version of Mordheim (the same developers as the upcoming Necromunda game) so I'm not sure what to expect. The reviews are mixed so hopefully the developers have taken learnings from Mordheim which they are applying to their Necromunda game. The fact that the developers seem to have ditched Mordheim in favour of focussing on Necromunda's development doesn't say much about their loyalty to improving games that have already been released though.

Cozy cockpit of an Imperial Knight

Either a remake / graphical overhaul of the first two No One Lives Forever games or a proper third instalment, as we never learned what HARM meant and fighting ninjas in a trailer park in Akron, Ohio whilst a tornado is rampaging towards you never grows old. But seeing as nobody knows who owns the rights to these games in this day and age.. alas never going to happen.

A Rogue Trader themed game a-la Mass Effect or some other action RPG out there, but with an emphasis on exploration and being a bastard in the name of the Throne. Maybe a nice mix between third person exploration / combat, ship combat and some juggling of your business empire.

An Imperial Knight themed game, preferably a first / third person game. We've got Freeblade now, but that's not really going to scratch that Knightly itch. As much as I dislike VR, this may be a good title for such a thing, just have the stupid remotes or whatever they're called represent the haptic gloves a noble wears to control their steeds.

A proper 40k themed FPS. The last one we had, as far as I can recall, is Fire Warrior, so.. high time that piece of crap is expunged from the records and replaced by something that's hopefully better.

Mount and Blade - the dragon edition!

Yep all the MB type gameplay of a living world running itself only throwing you in as a dragon on top. Get people to worship you; burn villages; go on a rampage as a wild dragon etc...

Honestly any game where you play as a dragon would be good - there isn't a single one on PC barring the super old Eye of the Dragon and Spyro Remastered.

(you could throw in Dragon Commander and some of the divinity games, but they are technically humans turning into dragons rather than outright dragons).

Half-Life 3.

I kid.

But not really.

In seriousness, there are several ideas I'd love to see made into video games:

First, a proper historical naval game. There was a game years ago called Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic that I played as a kid with my dad. I'd love to see something similar made today; starting off as a captain of a smaller ship and working your way up to different ships and the like throughout a theater of war.

Second, a game similar to an oldie called Metal Fatigue. The idea behind researching mech parts and then building custom suits to run out fight your enemies. You could fight underground, on the ground, and even in the air - it was a forward thinking game that was really great. I wish someone could do something with the giant robot franchise in a RTS style game.

Third, I have to second BrookM's idea for a rogue trade game built like Mass Effect. I'd lose my god damn mind if that was a thing.

A Mass Effect-like Rogue Trader game sounds good. Not something I’ve thought of before but now I want it.

Speaking of Mount & Blade, there’s a Warhammer conversion mod for it. Has anyone played it and can recommend it? I do own Mount & Blade already though have never played it.

One thing I really want to see is more games adapting something along the lines of Shadow of Mordor/War's Nemesis system, hands down one of the most compelling and original ideas to come along in recent years and one I'm amazed no one has really tried to imitate yet.

To my mind, the perfect setup for it is a superhero game (another thing that we're painfully lacking in right now actually, outside of Arkham and Spidey). Choose your powers or at least power type at the start, then get out into the world and start fighting some crime. The twist being that each time you foil a robbery, or save a kidnap victim, or fail to defuse a bomb, you're essentially rolling the dice on whether you become someone else's origin story. It works so well in Shadow Of because the exact way you handle things affects their outcome, and that strikes me as something that'd translate perfectly to this. In SOM, you shoot an Orc in the head and he'll come back with a metal plate or helmet over the wound. You burn them, they'll come back with fire weapons or immunity. They pick up weaknesses as well, which you can exploit for easy takedowns.

For instance, in an attempt to stop a robbery, you break a goon's arm and forget about him... until a few nights later, he shows up with some kind of mechanical appendage in place of said broken limb, and boom, you've got yourself a supervillain. But you take out a guy using stealth, and maybe he comes back but he'll always have that mortal fear of that moment, so picks up the weakness that he'll always be vulnerable to sneak attacks. It's the oldest trope in comic books, that the heroes create their villains, and this would play that out in a fascinating, unique way each time. You could even do the flipside, and have the chance that that cop you save goes on to become a fellow vigilante, or keeps the rest of his department off your back while you're heroing or something. Before you know it, you'd have a living, breathing Gotham-esque city where you've got tons of villains running around, forming factions, teaming up and betraying each other, so on and so forth.

Also, on an unrelated note, just give me an Assassin's Creed set in Ancient Rome. Ta.

I'd like a really good super hero MMO.

I'd also like a remake of Darklands, with updated UI and graphics and otherwise have it be functionally identical.

Those aren't compatible wishes.

Bethesda just flatly doesn't do 'well written' and is pretty dubious at 'well constructed.'

If you want it for Christmas, you also need time travel.

@Bromsy-
Darklands would be nice. I'd tweak a few of the mechanics, however- some game concepts just haven't aged well.

Isn't Vermintide 2 a sort of diablo-esque type hack/slash rpg?

That said, I agree. . . I'd LOOOOOVE to have a TES-esque warhammer fantasy type game. I'd love to have an open character design, open world RPG set in the Old World. In this dream game, there'd be an equipment slot for "trophies" where one could propel their "fall" (or ascension, depending on your view) to Chaos, or display that they are righteous hunters or whatever.

As for other games, when I was a younger lad playing on my PS1, there was a game called Jet Moto 2. I want that updated to PS4 graphics.

Any RPG with a real dungeonpunk/magitech setting that isn't from Japan. I've seen a lot of games court with this motiff, but none that have really fully embraced it in all its over the top tongue in cheek glory. It's a fairly niche genre, so I get that, but still.

If they actually go over the top with it, sure.

On the other hand, I'm really tired of 'fantasy, but guns and a few industrial or even sci-fi bits that would radically reshape the world but don't.' In fact, fantasy setting that's secretly sci-fi got really old and tired back in the 80s.
And then there's WoW, where one faction has a spaceship with an giant honking laser cannon and the other doesn't and yet somehow the faction that favors catapults wins offensive strikes against enemy capitals. :/

Definitely those two!

I'd really like to see a remake of the two Midwinter games. They were possibly the original sandbox game, back in the 16-bit era. In the first one, you were a grizzled survivalist running around a frozen land by skis, hang-glider or snowmobile, trying to recruit other colonists to your cause (or find someone they'd listen to), manage the resources in the scattered settlements, and organise a resistance to push back the invaders occupying your homeland. The second went full-on super-spy where you were fighting your way across a chain of islands trying to liberate them one at a time, and had something like twenty different vehicles you could use, from airships to hovercraft to jetpacks.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."

I'm quite interested in games that experiment with different methods of control. So I'm quite interested in VR at the moment.

I'd like to see a VR RTS, where you're on the bridge of a spaceship commanding units via a 3D holo display. You can look out the window and see your units following your orders.
It would probably prove kinda gimmicky, but it just seems like something I haven't seen done before, that's only really possible to do properly in VR.

Picture from GIS to show something like what I'm thinking of.

Something like VR version of Artemis? A very interesting game from a design perspective though the 7 player co-op can be problematic to pull of.

That does look neat, but I kind of feel that would be stepping on the toes of the star trek bridge command game a bit.
Games where a bunch of people each get given a different terminal and have to work together to drive a spaceship are cool, but there are a couple that do that already.
I guess I'm more interested in the use of VR to simulate a 3d user interface, in the form of a spaceship holo-tank.

That's because it's not real dungeon punk. It's just fantasy with random sci-fi bits thrown in.

I think the only real dungeonpunk works I've seen in the last couple years are the Eberron Setting of DnD (where they don't have guns cause they have "Wands" that do the same thing) and The Gods are Bastards, a web novel that looks dungeonpunk before being revealed as straight scifi under the hood.

Final Fantasy is probably the closest to dungeonpunk I can think of, but even then it's mostly just visual flair. It doesn't go all in, where protestors of coal and oil are instead elemental rights activists protesting the exploitation of fire elements for electric power (I think WoW does have a quest like that, but it's mostly a joke quest), or where the military is armed to the teeth with fireball rifles and the baker down the street has an enchanted oven that bakes bread for him because magic is so ubiquitous it fills the roll of science in a near modern society. That's what I want. I want the real deal, not the half-baked stuff that is more common in games.

Sadly, i feel most of the games i've wanted have come out with huge disappointment, or phased out into disappointment. Or i've just not really had the motivation to dive in 100% so i can appreciate them, Resident Evil 2 i'm leaving for when i have a sofa setup again and not a desk.

A FPS that incorporates fun and competitive styles. So Halo. But not the junk that was Halo 5 which neither delivered on social or competitive fun fully. And MCC killed off its player base within its dreaded years of developer ignorance. Patiently waiting for PC release.

Turn based combat RPG, that doesn't have annoying characters. Tried Lost Odyssey, forced myself to give it some time, character design killed it for me. Meaning to give Divinity a go, but feels real hard to pull that trigger.

A classic FPS, like Doom 2016, but better. That game i really enjoyed, i played through it a lot, then came round to playing through it again recently, but it was too easy. Hoping the new one isn't a walk in the park. Duke Nukem or Quake would be a nice return if they kept their style.

Would like a new STALKER. Basically the same as before, but more polished. Maybe more indepth/longer, but i'm not greedy, more polish would be fine.

Final Fantasy 7 remake that is a complete game, and not whatever we are probably gonna get

Yay for modding and openrource

Though in all my salty nature, what i would really like is a new console. A console that is a console, not a box that is crammed in with inferior hardware trying to be something it's not. I'm talking Sony/MS, their consoles just don't have an identity anymore. I don't need streaming, recording, sharing, app integration, etc. I want a console that has a fixed UI that's minimal, games that are happy to work at solid 30fps at 720p, medium bit rate voice communication, where i can put a disk in and it works out of the box. Basically i want functionality.
My Xbox One purchase was the worst console i ever bought, in my top 10 worst purchases of anything possibly. I have what would be considered a peasant PC and it makes the XB look horrendous.
In today's world of super phones (i have a motorola even), i fail to understand why people would want to use their console for anything except play games, when their phone is quicker.
Have external devices for things. Surround- AV Receiver etc, Streaming- stream box, Video recording- usb device cameras, Multimedia centres- AV receivers or basically anything that isn't a console.

In all fairness i played through it many times, so when revisiting on the hardest setting (not the non save one, that's impossible), levelling up was a breeze via the secrets, and knew when all the big enemy encounters were. If you get the secrets and upgrades it becomes incredibly easier to put down even the hardest of enemies. I found it was the abundance of ammo that was the real issue, making hard choices wasn't really in this game.
