Hi all!

I'm just starting a nighthaunt army following on the heels of my Legion of Night army and hoping to get them painted up in time for a local friendly tourney next month. The main thing to remember is this is a fun tourney, very chilled and relaxed, we've all come from other miniature games and just fed up of the ultra competitiveness out there right now.

SO my plan is to build a 2k list that includes all the ghostly ladies i can muster, because myself and my Mrs are big fans of supernatural horror such as the Ring, Grudge etc etc.

So I've come up with two 1k lists for now.

Guardian of Souls - Beacon of Nagashizzar
Lady Olynder

2x10 Chainrasps
Hexwraiths (because i don't have 10 Reapers or any more chainrasps

3x5 DreadScythe Harridans
4 Myrmourn Banshees

Second list is dropping the Guardian in favour of a Knight of Shrouds on steed to go with the hex wraiths and another 5 Harridans.

Not the most competitive i'm sure. My model count is everything from the Soulwar box set, 8 x Myrmourn Banshees, 20 Harridans, HQ Banshee (so i can do the screamer battalion in bigger point games) 10x Hexwraiths and Lady O!

I would lean towards bringing the Knight of Shrouds since Olynder already serves as a solid spellcaster, and beefing up the myrmourns to 8-man. Hexwraiths are a good choice here because Olynder's command ability brings back 1 model regardless of wounds count; 1 chainrasp or grimghast is worth less than 1 hexwraith or spirit host.

So, I'm going to be honest here. I'm a nighthaunt player, and Nighthaunt is in a rough spot right now. It's a hard army to play and suffered from being one of the first full 2.0 tomes and has some internal issues.

Since you have the Soul Wars box I'd suggest swapping out the Guardian of Souls for a Spirt Torment and giving him the midnight tome. His healing ability is usually more reliable, and making him a spellcaster is pretty good. You also want to give him "Ruler of the Spirt hosts' as his command trait, as it is the most powerful.

Next, I would suggest you try to combine the units. This allows you to consistently get off your healing, since you cannot bring back a wiped unit from the grave unlike the LoN rules.

As Ninth suggested, you are better off swapping out Lady O for a Knight of Shrouds.

Finally, I'd suggest not using the Hexwraiths and filling out an extra unit or two with your remaining points.

Also, make sure you are using the most recent points from GHB 2019, since the Nighthaunt had many points drops there.

Nighthaunt in a tough spot? Your local meta must be pretty nasty for that to be the case.

No, not really. This isn't the thread to get into it, but Nighthaunt far and away have the worst 2.0 tome to date.

I respectfully disagree, but you're right that this isn't the place to discuss it.

Thanks to you both for the responses. I have a game at my FLGS tomorrow night so i'll give those suggestions a go! As i said not really after a power house list. That will come once i've got a few games under my belt, and yes will more than likely be with LoN.

Advantage of a small points game is you can get in a few games in one night!

Had a small test game last with a mate of mine i'm trying to sway from 40k into AoS. It was LoN Vs Nighthaunt and one thing that was clear was they seemed to struggle taking down the skellies (Guess a lot of armies would to be honest)

Reapers are your hard counter to skellies--rend -1 and they reroll hits against units with 5+ models. The rend is key as skellies go from 5+ armor to no armor (they are a 6+ with +1 to saves against rend -).

With your ability to fly a valid tactic is to send units charging over his front line to hit the characters. Or utilize the deep strike capacity to deploy units behind his front line.

Sound advice. Yes i was thinking of using the Myrmourns to "boo" behind their lines and shut down any spellcasters. I have my first game with the 1k list, now on Monday, so will report back then on how it gets on.

Yeah, keeping the Myrmourns in the underworlds to drop in near your enemy spellcasters to shut down an important spell is usually the best way to deploy them.

Well i played the tourney this weekend and i'm pleased to say i managed to get 2nd place! However i believe i was robbed of 1st place due to what seemed like a ridiculously over powered City's of Sigmar army 2+ to hit and wound and re-roll 1's.

(added a post to the cities thread in the other forum.)

The Harridans did well as a bit distraction unit, as well as deal quite a bit of damage. However next tourny i'm probably going to drop Lady O and the knight in favor of a spirt torment, Guardian of souls and a banshee (to drop with the Myrmourns) Would seem to give me more active combat buffs and the Guardian giving units back.

Lady O did ok to be honest, her abilities put the hurt out and debuffs did win me a game (making that last skink run to give me the objective).
