I have a new game review up.... Burrows and Badgers.

I recently got a large order of Osprey Game rules in the mail. They included titles from the main range of wargames as I am all up-to-date on the Osprey Wargaming Series. I picked up a wide variety of titles and genres intent on letting my family decide what skirmish game they wanted to try next. I let them look through the various titles, page through the books, I gave them a quick synopsis of the rules, etc. At the end of the day, the decision for the next campaign was unanimous. The winner was….

Burrows and Badgers

…. I guess the idea of playing Redwall-esque anthropomorphic animals in a fantasy setting was too much for them. Therefore, I sat down and decided to give the game a good read through and I figured I might as well give the game the old Blood and Spectacles review in the process. After all, if my family has their way we will be seeing plenty of this game soon.

Now, into Northymbria we go……

Nice review!

Burrows and Badgers is one of those games that I'd pick up if there was any local interest, but it's mostly just Kill Team and Warcry where I'm at. If they had a warband starter set I'd probably grab it just to paint up.

Great review. I actually bought a copy of this based on a post you made a few weeks ago, LOL.

Oathsworn is putting on a new Kickstarter later this month, so now is a good time to get into this game.

Entertaining and thoughtful review, thanks for posting this. I definitely agree with your thoughts on many skirmish games lacking certain levels of tactical depth, primarily
having the campaign element carry the weight.

With that said, I just ordered some lovely B&B minis and the rule book. Super excited to check it out and run through it with my GF.

Cheers

Late to the party, but wanted to say thanks for this review.

I've been away from wargaming for almost 2 years and I had no idea this game existed. Normally I'd buy it right away, but your review convinced me that I'd probably be happier for now sticking with Song of Blades and "Song of the Splintered Lands" for my athropomorphic animal warband combat needs.

That said it's cool to see Oathsworn making rules for these figs as I bought into a couple of their kickstarters back in the day. Might buy it someday just to support them and Osprey.

I’m pretty much aligned with your thoughts on this one, Eric. I think the primary draw is indeed the beautiful Oathsworn models and I have a couple of dozen even despite not being a fan of Redwall or anthropomorphized animals generally; they are just that good as models. The game is a sturdy if conventional way to play with the wonderful figures.

As usual, one point you bring up in particular caught my attention. This time it’s Hit Points. As you know, I have been playing around with Nightwatch and I like that the Hunters in that game have multiple wounds; although in that game, losing wounds definitely is debilitating. Another game on my horizon, the World of Tanks remake of TANKS from GF9/Battlefront, also uses HP, without any debilitation mechanic. Generally, I don’t mind tracking HP in minis games where max HP is approximately >5. Any higher and it’s probably only justified if it progs some other mechanic, such as debilitation.
