Subject: Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy anime - Netflix 2020 - trailer up
I’d given up on modern TF since the mini-con series. Not only was I old, but it was pretty cack. And oh my, that ropey CGI animation and endless waves of Decepticon Clones and Stock Footage.
But this at least looks the part. But without Peter Cullen, is it really Optimus Prime?

G1 cartoon and comics, the two decent Cybertron games, Transformers Prime - that's all I acknowledge... plus Transformers Animated, I guess, just for novelty value.
Everything else can just disappear, as far as I'm concerned.
This, however looks very cool; if it's anywhere nearly as good as Prime, then I'll be happy. It just needs Peter Cullen! Come on, if Michael Bay can get him to play fish-lips Optimus, these guys should be able to get him!

Oh man I hope this does well! I've always thought Transformers future was ditching the human element and going full Cybertron.

Kind of depends on how far back you want to go.
Of the initial releases, most of the Diaclone based toys had human lips, whilst most of the Microchange ones didn't. The cartoon changed the designs (in some cases, massively) and most of them got lips, presumably so you could see who was speaking (unless the hard pressed animators screwed up - which was frequently). The ones that kept the original faceplates were Prime and Soundwave, due to distinctive voices and Wheeljack, with his flashing Dalek style indicators.
Interestingly, because the comics were being produced at the same time that the cartoon was, the early earliest comics were faithful to the toys until the cartoon came out. They quickly fell in line with the redesigns. Pity, because I really loved the original look of Gears.

I found the political thrust of 'We shouldn't oppose Robot Hitler, we need to survive' pretty tiring. Optimus BJ Blazkowicz didn't endear me or seem recognizable either.
The political rally about how the Decepticons are actually the good guys was a bit too much on the nose. Seriously, writers, we know its in the name, this is pointless posing.

Agreed. I always saw Megatron as a despot who ruled with an iron fist, Decepticons just did as they were told and that was more or less it. He didn't have to say anyone he just crushes any opposition. The whole Hitler thing is boring. It's almost like things from the 80's just don't translate very well to "the current year". Or the writers really think that's what people want to see. Not enough pointless explosions and it's missing a soundtrack. Pass.
This is funny too because my brother told me just last night youtube keeps recommending the Transformers and Top-gun sound track.

Noting a whole lot of personal lists here without Beast Wars in them.
Shame.
This looks like it has potential. I personally rather like the grim dark transformers stories and while the central idea (whether it's time to run or keep fighting) seems to cover a lot of the same ground the Fall of Cybertron game had, the designs are clearly so thoroughly G1 you might as well take it as the G1 version of that story.
Beast wars was fun to watch! Also the second part where they go back to Cybertron, and when they find the scientist who was forced to mimic a sentient plant.

Beast Wars introduced some important concepts. But that show does not hold up AT ALL. Like Reboot and other cgi shows of the mid 90s. It's a bunch of empty flat landscapes with crap cgi models doing a bunch of crap things. There are good to great moments in Beastwars, but over all... nearly unwatchable these days.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Couldn't they have at least made their vehicles forms look Cybertronian?

They did... The jets are the triangular, cybertronian design, and the Autobots appear to be fairly generic looking vehicles rather than specifically earth designs.

Transformers Prime was a cartoon series, although it did have a few Nintendo tie-in games.
Yeah. At the time Hasbo was doing a multimedia "Aligned continuity". The war/fall of cybertron were telling the story of the cybertron while Prime was telling the story of earth. Arguably Robots in Disguise being a sequel to Prime is also part of the aligned continuity.

I agree. I greatly enjoyed it at the time, but I flipped though them a bit years later and you can't go home again.
I do still have a tub downstairs full of the toys, though.

Kinda interesting from an emerging 90s cgi perspective - it was a very exciting time for the young medium - but BW really was too far from the original show, where a vehicle made sense for a robot in disguise. Some of these shows can be timeless, but the animation is too awkward.
Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Its not. That was Transformers Prime.
I realize that Aligned was a thing, especially with Aaron Archer's "squint test" debacle, but the creators of the HMS games explicitly stated the game was designed to be "a G1 Prequel" and only had passing ties to the other media solely through Hasbro mandate.

It's actually the opposite. HMS was all on board for the aligned continuity. It was the show runners that wanted to break from the production bible and not be beholden to it. Things in the games are not and never were a part of gen 1. Like Cybertron being sentient. The well of all sparks. Sparks at all. Sparks as a concept didn't appear until Beast Wars. Transformers as life forms didn't appear until much later. Gen 1 they really were just robots and could be dismantled and rebuilt all over the place. Omega Supreme is a great example of the aligned continuity vs the Gen 1 in that hes NOTHING like his gen 1 counterpart.
