The idea here is to represent an engaged forcefield surrounding a drone, and do it very cheaply with easily gotten materials, that will look good on the board and have a bit of a wow psychadelia factor, similar to the Vortex template produced by GW (at least during 7th)
Buy some 20mm beads that look cool like force fields. The product in the photos belowo is a 20mm Miracle Bead from Poplollies Beads. I have a low grade phone so the photos below not represent he "swirliness" of these beads well, they are awesome. But there are so many different bead sizes, colors, varieties, and vendors out there, adjust for taste. Dig in and find a bead color that suits your army.
Base this with GW stands, or homemade stands (I will personally use nails, and some cheap wood laminate bases I have)
Top off with a common thumbtack. You could paint this to match your army. I'm just going to leave it as is.
Anyway, I hope this might save somebody who wants a whole lot of shield drones some major duckets. At $7/model, it would have cost me nearly $300 for the 38 Shield Drones I want available for my Tau army I'm building. This comversion looks better to me than the GW model, or at least more novel, mixes up the monotony of my dronage, requires no painting outside of basing, and cost me less than $20!

P.S. if interested in this conversion, a 2mm hole in the bead, which seems like the standard for a 20mm bead, is an absolutely perfect, snug fit for a GW base like the one photographed.
