As I’ve really gotten into working on my space marine army, I’ve come across a bit of a dilemma. I paint black templars and I like it that way, but I want to have a few more options in there and a few more splashes of color while keeping it all fluffy. So I’m thinking about giving some of my BT crimson left fists and adding some Crimson Fists with Templars kneepads, especially for longer ranges stuff, like the Declates Crusade marines. I feel like this is a fun, lore friendly way to add some extra color to my army list and give me options to reasonably run BT, CF, or Imperial Fists Rules (representing a mixing of their shared heritage rather than one over the other), with all the models following the same rules at once mind you. Would you be happy playing against an army like that as long as it was still WYSIWYG for equipment and it was clear which chapter rules I was sticking with for the whole force at the start of the game?

That sounds like a fun theme and completely reasonable to me.

I think you'll find that most people have issues with multi-faction armies when they're all using the same color scheme but have different detachments using different rules, which imposes a cognitive burden to keep track of which models are under which rules. You've got the opposite: Multiple color schemes but all the same rules, so no trouble remembering 'everything is BT' or 'everything is CF'. You're even going the extra mile and incorporating visual elements of each chapter in the other, so that whichever rules you're using, it still is alluded to visually.

I say go for it.
