He said they aim for the classic=Bonner etc. look so I think it is a given, but we must wait for more meaty news. There was something about Blood Berets being shown as first if I remember correctly.

Man I really like the new stuff. While the capitol were lacking in flavor from original, the mishima and everything else was mostly good. At least there were models in each faction I though looked good. Even capitol were fine with a headswap and less the shoulderpads. Ufnortunately, I didn't really find out about it till too soon to when the shut the line down and wasn't able to pick up enough of the model I wanted. I even got my gaming group to agree to get into it when the next month they closed and everyone abandoned the idea.

I feel like most of Warzone original figures, minus the plastic stuff. was just too bulky, yes fine in their time, but not so much 25+ years later. I have the same problem with warmachine in that while they have some newer sculpts they haven't updated to modern model sensibilities while maintaining model "character".

Yeah, that.

Plastics, eh? So how is that happening? Prodos/Archon makes that a no go for a lot of folks.

Also, who are Res Nova Games? Have they done anything before? Are they yet another offshoot of Prodos/Archon?

Note: I am asking. I have no information that Res Nova Games is in any way affiliated with Prodos/Archon.

TBH I too have no idea about Res Nova Games but from the video I am sure that they have nothing common with Prodos/Archon. As to pictures - there are none so far - as mentioned that video is the only thing mentioning new edition of WZ.

They appear to have... a Facebook page? One product released. I think? An okay looking card game.

Yeah, I'm going to say a company without a 10 bucks a year domain/hosting package doesn't inspire much confidence when they say they're going to be producing plastics.

Unless they're going to Kickstarter with the game again, in which case they inspire no confidence whatsoever.

Yeah, fair points but...MC nostalgia is stronger I lived through all the deaths of WZ so far so another one will at least not surprise me. Untill there are more news I dare to stay optimistic

I'm happy this game is getting another shot and Bryan seems like a good choice to head up the design side of things. My main concern is that.. I don't know how much Res Nova really know about WZR and why it ultimately petered out. Those who do not learn from history..

What exactly killed WZR anyway? I mean, Prodos did everything they could to implode as a company, but I'm assuming there must have been something else at play?

In my opinion, it came down to money. I think it was adequately financed via kickstarter and they reached a pretty good portion of the former Warzone fans who were still in the hobby but they over-promised in terms of what they would make - and when you factor in delays and the drawn out shipping process, it feels like there wasn't enough left in the coffers once the last KS shipment had gone out. They had - to my perception - the double whammy problem of not enough money or experience for post-KS marketing and retail support (no retail-only releases, no 2 player starter etc).. and no new product to sell to backers who had already secured the items they already wanted via the KS. I think the only stuff they did to promote the game after the KS was the 'official' tournament at the UKGE (which was great but.. not as well attended as they were hoping, I think) and some Beasts of Wars videos.. many of which took so long to come out after filming that Rob had already left Prodos by the time the whole series had aired. On top of that, the volunteer program was.. inconsistently supported and as a result I don't think the game get an in-store presence as much as it could have done.

So, not a lot of new sales from people who didn't already back the KS meant a need to produce new units (and the Imperial faction) ASAP so they could be sold to the committed backers. But I guess it was kind of a death spiral at this point - each investment to design, manufacture and distribute a new product was only sometimes covered by the sales of said product. Sometimes it was the rules (but we updated those.. a lot!) sometimes it was the models but a lot of the time it was the dwindling pool of potential buyers. On top of that, AvP was kicking Prodos in the butt and yet there were still WZR 1.0 profiles with no models when Prodos decided to.. do WZR 2.0. Again, there wasn't much promotion of this outside of the existing WZR community (at least none that I saw) and the gamble didn't pay off; the cost of all that printed material (2 new rulebooks, new cards) plus a few new units resulted in the game going on long periods of hiatus with no releases at all. If I remember correctly (and I may not - this feels like a lifetime ago) there was a renewal of the license with Cabinet but at that point, I don't think anyone had a fulltime position working at Prodos besides Jarek. Everyone else seemed to be splitting their time between Prodos and Archon, or working full time at Archon. Finally Prodos pooled it's remaining resources (and energy!) into a new KS. This would have been for the much needed (arguably, much needed 2 years prior) 2 player battle box that would also be the means to introduce one of the factions that didn't have any models yet. Things.. happened *.. and the KS did not go ahead despite the effort that had already gone into preparing for it. Shortly after that, the license went back to Cabinet.

* I have heard conflicting information from two different sources about that second KS. It may be that both have some truth to them, but I'd rather not point the finger of blame without proof

Thanks Siygess - IMO a very good writeup of the whole Warzone Prodos mess.
I had high hopes, received some preprinted minis to paint, supported them etc.

So I was well spirited towards the effort.
IMO the models are still some of the best around, but for me the rules and all the reasons above killed the game.

IMO everybody would be better off using the old 1st edition rules as a strong starting point!

Fifth times the charm right!

Or did I forget one and this is the sixth?

It would be the seventh by my reckoning - Warzone 1st ed, Warzone 2nd ed, Ultimate Warzone, That One From FFG, Warzone Resurrection 1st ed, Warzone Resurrection 2nd ed.

Luckily it's a well known fact that seventh time is indeed the charm!

Warzone was the one that got away when I was a kid, I absolutely loved the setting but no one would play it as it wasn’t 40k. I still remember lovingly daubing the old football helmet capitols in an inch thick coat of enamel paint and thinking they were awesome.

A pal and I were saying we were gonna give 1st Ed or UWZ a whirl once we can all freely leave our homes and exchange
microbes again, I even ordered some Bauhaus to get going, so this is extremely good news! I’ve been loving reading the rule books again, they are so awesomely unapologetically 90s.

Huh, that’s unexpected. As others have said, a relatively unknown company doing it means there is more caution than optimism for me. Both Prodos and Excelsior were largely unknown, and they both ended up making some terrible decisions while working on the property.

Focusing on the original artwork for inspiration is the right call, the charm of Mutant Chronicles/Warzone that 80’s/90’s Iron Age of comics feel (especially 2000AD). Bonner and the rest made that over-the-top aesthetic really work and eschewing or modernizing it too much risks losing that energy. At the same time, treating it like a museum piece (like Excelsior did) risks stagnation and can cause issues if you try and translate it all at once.

For my money, the Modiphius reboot of the RPG hit the sweet spot for me. It expanded things, but kept the heart and soul of the setting. Kind of why I hoped they would do it, but they picked up Elder Scrolls and Fallout, so not happening.

My ideal here is just a competent platoon-level (10-40 minis) that cleans up the 1st Edition rules and gives them a semblance of balance (please, not another one based on 2nd’s over-complex mess, please). If they can make plastics work, cool, but I would hate to see things sink because they misjudged things and went in too much on it. Either way, I’m guessing it will start with a KS, and I hope they don’t go overboard on scope creep with (even though chances of that with a new company are high).

At this point, I am with the other long term fans in having seen the game die every time, and at this point I realize no established company will take a risk on it. So we’ll just have to see if this time the new, untested studio can finally make it work and not fall to delusions of grandeur. My advice is start small and expand slow. The 1st Edition of Warzone is a good template here. Sure, I’d love to see all my favourite units back, but go too fast or bite off too much and you’re going to choke on your aspirations.

Either way, I wish them luck, and really hope it works out for them. I could use another generation of Venusian Rangers for my collection if nothing else.

Dunno. The fella does not inspire confidence. This feels like a "Kickstarter kinda sorta delivers and then it all just dies" sort of venture.

I would like to show you guys a company in Ireland that sells miniature moulds:

https://shop.princeaugust.ie/

Here is the bottom line. Brigade is working on Celtos 2. Seb games is buying the Void 1.1 line and working on the new rules(and a few recasts). Prince August has the rule books and Blood Berets, the game.

If Warzone is ever to come back, Cabinet will need to do to things:

1. Ditch Res Nova, because it looks like it's gonna be another Kickstarter.

2. Get PA on the horn and talk about bringing the Tangent edition back. Probably get some of the original guys around, have a few games to see what works and what doesn't.

I really don't see how complicated it could be.

I didn't know either of these things were happening. Interesting news nonetheless!

Still waiting for someone to update Chronopia though...

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Chronopia Empire would be lovely to see...

But if it is Warzone, I will buy the Mishima and Illian figures. Why stop a 20+ year streak?

On that note, still impatiently waiting for my Siege at the Citadel...

But...this isn't Prodos/Archon/etc. at all, is it?

I put aside a fair amount of Resurrection models when they went on clearance and bought the whole of Modiphius’s RPG. I’m very willing to be cautiously optimistic about a skirmish game.

Did I miss anyone?

Target. They had the license too. Might as well as Modiphius to the list for the Siege of the Citadel game, but those are Prodos sculpts.

Pity about the FFG version...my group really liked that one, probably due to the scale of the minis. BUT...54mm is definitely not for everyone.
