...what the next thing 2020 is going to throw at us, in america anyway.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/weather/massive-heat-dome-forecast-to-swell-over-much-of-lower-48-within-a-week/ar-BB16AAfa

Yep, just what we needed.

I'm sure the hot temps will be seized upon as an excuse by the covidiots not to wear masks.

What? It snowed like last year! Take that global warming *lewd denialest noises*

This is continuing the trend the US has had for a few years now. The year was already forecast last year to potentially be the hottest on record. I'm waiting for the headlines myself. We all know high temperatures bring other things and boy won't that be fun in an election year!

Yeah, aircons/ventilators connected to multiple households are a great spreader of diseases. Every time I go offshore there's a different "boatvirus" going around the vessel, and the ventilation system is one of the main ways it spreads.

Also the actual next thing America is facing is roughly 30 million people standing to be suddenly homeless over the next month.

Most of those people worked 2+ minimum wage part time jobs and barely had enough to get by month to month, but you can bet that the corporate controlled media will blame them when they get kicked out into the street for not having enough savings to get thru a crisis.

I'm looking for millions of them to be given the """choice""" (triple quotes intentional) of """signing up""" for a """voluntary""" program of working in corporate labor camps at very low wages and paid in corporate scrip that can only be spent at the corporate store, or being arrested for being homeless and court ordered into an honest prison/slave labor facility ran by a corporation.

Bid deal about bad summer heat and masks. You can wear them just fine in that air-conditioned grocery store. I just delivered 90 bags of 40lb softener salt at work the other day. That's nearly 4,000 pounds, two bags at a time on my shoulder, all with a three-layer cloth mask on. I had to carry them all about 75 feet from my delivery truck. Yup. It was hot as Hades, but I am nearly 40 and was able still to do it.

People will be fine doing a whole lot less strenuous things than that. This is just a damn hot summer, like 8 years ago when I got married. That year it was 95 here in Michigan on June 30, and on our honeymoon down to Kentucky it got to 105 one day. The 65 degree underground cave tours we were going on were BLISS.

Not at all. I'm just able to look at a single heat wave in July objectively. Dumb gak like this just gives ammo to deniers, because in fact this one event doesn't support global warming any more than a single 'record-breaking' cold snap in February refutes it.

Rise in average temps over time, decrease in sea ice, greater number of hurricanes, etc., yeah. Not a single heat wave during a hot month. Use your heads here.

Frankly, denialists at this point are so far up their own asses I can't say I care how much ammo they have. It only shows a failure to comprehend.

I agree with both gorgon and lordofhats. Denialist are bring OJ striches, but a heatwave in July is not proof of global warming either, except maybe as example of more and more extreme weather patterns. The record cold snap in february is exactly the same in that regard.

Of the ten hottest years (by instrument) on record, all of them have been in the last 15 years. Of the top five, all of them have been the last 5 years. 2020 is set to possibly be #1. We're past the pointing of pretending, or even inludging the notion, that increasingly intense extreme weather patterns can be explained by other phenomena. Weather is changing and extreme weather is intensifying and rising global temperatures are called the cause by hundreds of researchers across multiple countries. The current heat dome is simply the continuation of a multi-year trend of heat domes falling over the lower 48 in the last 5 years, which is also the five years that happen to be the 5 hottest on record.

We already know for years...
The trend is just getting more obvious to a lot of people those last years as mentioned above by Lordofhats. Unfortunately, the thing is that even the slightest imperceptible change for human being is already a big thing for holy Terra, so imagine when we can see it, feel it. It is already almost too late ...
Whether it's cold / warm weather, storms (hugest rain and dust storms recorded this year since this phenomenons are measured) etc etc and this is the tip of the iceberg.
Not even talking about the 6th mass extinction exploding
Despite the world being more and more cemented, most of it is still inhabited. Record temperature are now recorded in siberia and greenland like in the 100's degrees.
Deniers are going to say this happen every year, and it does, but what is concerning is the continuously growing length of those episodes.
I could go on and on so I'm going to stop.
Time is not for denial anymore but for action.

I'm of the “Pick up that can" camp. Rather than expecting governments to follow some sort of environmental agreement, we should focus on our own environmental efforts -- at least until China agrees. Sure, carbon goes into the atmosphere, but smog pollution is local.

At least China is #3 in nuclear plants. I'm sure after how China handled CoVid, we can rest easy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_China

****

You probably already know that CoVid has resulted in reduced emissions.Temporarily.

The COVID-19 pandemic cut carbon emissions down to 2006 levels

One problem about renewable energy is that non-renewable energy's fixed costs (eg. research and infrastructure to deliver fuel) has already been paid for. That is, if we were using solar panels on a regular basis, then somebody said, "Hey, I found this black liquid that burns stuff" we wouldn't be using it because we didn't know how to refine it, we didn't have the storage to transport it, and we didn't have the technology to use it. This could be offset by subsidies and taxing non-renewable fuels.

Map: How high are gas taxes in your state?
https://www.vox.com/2014/7/9/5883879/map-new-york-has-the-highest-gas-taxes-in-the-country-alaska-the

Unfortunately, and there's this other problem. "People don’t want to be forced to change their lifestyles to accommodate the environment.'
https://sites.psu.edu/perspectivesontheenvironment/2015/02/13/renewable-energy-why-dont-we-use-it-more-if-its-so-great/

Going back to gas, though, working from home obviously decreases transportation use. This saves time, as well as money. However, a country's work culture obviously affects how feasible working from home is.

As for CoVid itself and hot temperatures, I don't think you have to look further than Brazil and now the USA to see how that argument worked out. As Eldarain notes, you can't look at only one variable (eg.virus doesn't survive as well at high temperatures) when it comes to human behavior (eg. high temperatures cause people to go indoors).

Except these extremely hot and record breaking july months are coming more and more. Hearing news my reaction was "again...".

Nobody is claiming single july is proof. This is just one of the SEVERAL years in quick succession that happens though.

Are you going to keep making same clain 2021? 2022? 2023? Let's ignore previous years! It's just this one month!
