So, warhammer 40k has a LOOOT of factions, and it gets hard to find things sometime. any chance of eistablishing subforums for some of the faction groupings to make things easier?

Maybe the following tactics subforums:

Space Marines
Chaos
The Imperium
Xenos

it won't solve everything I know but it may make finding a tactica post that's relevant to each persons needs easier.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Unfortunately dakka admins have went for opposite. Even more threads. Rather than mega threads for each faction it will be per topic threads for questions and once answered would eventually fall away...

Though implementation of that rule seems thankfully slow.

Actually given the not-so-positive response we're still considering what to do about the tactics forum and 9th edition.

- Should we ask people to start all new threads for 9th and close the 8th edition ones?
- Are people okay with the mega thread format as it currently stands, or should we ask people to do something different?

We probably won't get more forums, so we need to figure out what to do in that existing forum for now, and sooner rather than later . Like, this week for sure. Input greatly appreciated!

Can you create a separate forum just for the megathreads, and then a forum for more specific tactical situations/questions/individual unit entries that don't fit into the megathreads?

It seems the megathreads are highly popular for going in and talking generally about the various tactics and units within a faction, but they're hard to look through to find specific questions, and they tend to bury other threads within the tactics forums. A "40k Faction Megathreads" forum might help resolve the issue while keeping the megathreads alive?

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I really like that idea, personally, but not sure if it can be our immediate solution due to the difficulty of adding new forums (and getting it approved, too). But really good thinking!!

I have a suggestion.

I think the current format is the best option available as the creation of new forums is not feasible. As it stands, the threads are starter and (mostly) maintained.

However, if these threads can be started by either you guys, the mods, or someone you contact and request to start them, so that the first post can continue to be a dynamic thing, being updated very regularly.
If these posters can keep that initial post:
1. Tidy and organised, using spoilers and clear titles (possibly setting up a format across the threads to keep them somewhat unified)

2. Updated with new/evolving/updated information that can serve as a quick reference to all browsers about releases, changes, and current meta.

While most of the megathreads do these things very well, if this was to be moderated and unified across the forum it could solve a lot of the problems you suggest. However:

3. If the post could also serve as a hub of information, and if it were to be regularly updated, then it could also serve as a sort of table of contents (kept orderly and easy to read) so that browsers could reference the first post to direct them to the individual page that contains the information they want to be looking for- this would be down to the OP to elect what deserves to be referenced here e.g a question asked by an individual poster or a discussion about an individual tactic.

This could provide a solution to the problem of having to sift through pages and pages of posts to find relevant info, prevent questions being asked twice, as well as somewhat mitigate the chaos that these threads can often devolve into.
This could also massively decrease general clutter in the tactics thread itself. And imo, if these original posts are to be kept to a format and style, then the overall look of the tactics forum will improve wholesale

Obviously this requires immense diligence and effort on behalf of the mods and OPs, and I definitely appreciate how time consuming this could be, but I like to think it may somewhat placate the major issues found in these threads whilst not creating impossible amounts of work or creating new forums.

Aaaaaa so that's why. I was thinking you have been too busy so far.

Well my preference would be 9e threads and basically as is now. Maybe bit more enforcement that it actually stays in topic(tactics). Even better if there could be subforums as well but guess can't have everything eh? Not even "imperium-chaos-xenos" level subcategories?

Though megathread subforum itself could work also.

BTW is there technical issues preventing subforum creation? One would imagine dakkadakka would use forum software that's decent enough making new subforums easy.

Other ideas. Since meta keeps changing so frequently maybe have megathreads closed and started new periodically? Either page count or just time. At least prevents a bit issue that thread has stuff from start of edition totally unrelated now.

I was the one spearheading the initiative, and after all the people hating it, I'm just not going to touch it. Not worth the effort to fight it.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
