At Power-Con today, a virtual convention for She-Ra and He-Man fans Mattel announced a Masters of the Universe RPG.

Legends of Grayskull will be powered by Cortex Prime, the latest version of Cortex from designer Cam Banks.

Masters of the Universe becomes the second hugely popular series Fandom’s Cortex has signed up as many weels, with Netflix’s The Dragon Prince also announcing an RPG called Tales of Xadia with the system.

In the Legends of Grayskull tabletop game, players can create their own masters, overcome high-stakes and adventure in a world where magic meets technology.

The game will have a core book, a digital companion and toolset along with a community content creation and sharing platform.

Legends of Grayskull will also have an organised play program which will give players the chance to connect in a living story.

Adam Bradford, Executive Producer and Vice President of Tabletop at Fandom, told press;

My first action figures as a kid were He-Man and Skeletor,”

Masters of the Universe was my first fandom—I learned to read from the mini-comics, watched the show and acted out scenes on our sofa, and made up the most elaborate stories of my own with those characters. I’m thrilled for Fandom to partner with Mattel to make Legends of Grayskull and give fans a new way to tell exciting stories with family and friends.”

Fandom, which bought Cortex from Margaret Weis Productions in 2019, has plenty of experience with the RPG community. The company runs D&D Beyond, one of some 400,000 community sites across TV, movies and gaming it operates.

Ricardo Briceno, Vice President of Global Franchise Marketing for Masters of the Universe at Mattel, told the press that they are keen to explore the new aspect of Masters of the Universe with Fandom.

Having grown up as a kid loving Masters of the Universe, I’ve seen firsthand how this beloved property has been enjoyed by fans for over three decades, but never through the imaginative storytelling of a tabletop game,”

By partnering with the all-star team at Fandom, we are able to offer fans an entirely new way to play out the epic battles between He-Man, Skeletor and the diverse characters throughout this universe.”

Mattel has signed a multi-year deal with Fandom to manage adventures in Eternia with Legends of Grayskull, and it is a project that is part of the company’s Masters of the Universe reboot.

The reboot includes a comic book series by DC Comics, reimagined versions of the classic 80s toys (due out in the winter), two animated shows on Netflix and a feature film.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I did some digging into the Cortex Prime system. Seems neat. I also found out that there is a Dragon Prince RPG planned for 2021 using the cortex prime system called Tales of Xadia.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Cortex? I think I remember using that for a Marvel RPG. If memory serves, it’s a pretty fluid system that allowed for a lot of flexibility in character creation. Wonder how it would work in a fantasy-ish setting like this.

This seems like a thing absolutely nobody asked for, but hey, IP is gonna reboot.

I'm not an expert on 80s fantasty, but isn't He-man just boneless conan?

Yeah. There was a marvel one using the "2nd edition" of cortex. The newer version is more setting neutral at its core and more flexible to be adapted to settings/ip.

Between He-Man (magic and high technology being weilded by a post apoc society that doesnt fully understand either) and Dragon Prince (full on fantasy with full on magic and dragons and gak) you should have a pretty broad base to make any game you want. Id say only a hard space faring sci fi is missing.

Oh, boy that's a rabbit hole.

Basically OG He-man (not the cartoon) is a more serious Conan like figure that doesn't transform between Prince Adam and He-man. He's just he-man. This was the packaged in comics and the source of the lawsuit between Mattel and the Conan rights holder at the time.

The Cartoon He-man is pretty much boneless.

Honestly both are awesome in their own way.

Plus Masters of the Universe is a fantasy/sci-fi mixed world. They find old tech and use it, like flying machines and laser guns. One character has a bionic extendable neck. Bit of a Kitchen sink setting. In the cartoon He-man's mom is actually a crashed astronaut from Earth.
