Thinking about getting into Warhammer Underworlds, and was wondering if people have any problems with model conversions.

Plan on buying two warband boxes, but thought it would be neat to use older Fantasy models I have always liked converted to have the proper weapon loadout and are decent representations of the models in the box sets.

The difficulty with Underworlds is making sure you can still tell who's who in your warband. It doesn't matter as much with some warbands (ex. Ylthari's Guardians where everyone's got a different weapon) but equivalent weapons isn't always enough. If you're going to do conversions I'd suggest doing names on bases to make it absolutely unambiguous who is who.

What are you looking at using?

I have used IDK eel riders as Rippers Snarlfangs in an official tournament with out any issue, I bought along the proper models just in case but no one batted an eye lid.

You've only a small number of models per side and it doesn't really use anything but the base as a functional part of the game. So you can go wild. As long as its clear what is what and that they are all different where they are supposed to be. Heck you could go wild and make a little ID card for each on a home printer with a photo of each one if they are very different so that you can not only remember but your opponent can remember too.

Mainly looking at using the Witch Elves from the last metal Cauldron of Blood to replace the leader and two Witch Elves with swords.

Looking to get two Beastmaster minis, one with a halberd to put on the leader, and the female one with whip and claw for the Sister of Slaughter (I think that's the name. Haven't followed AoS at all).

An absolute waste of money, but always wanted to paint those models from the old Dark Elves fantasy range.

Casually, I don't think many people have a problem with conversions. In a tournament setting, unfortunately, conversions are not permitted (this rule was implemented sometime over the last 12 months).

Which events have banned conversions?

Ah. That is kind of a bummer, while I don't frequent tournaments, would be annoying not being able to use the minis I converted. Kind of expected something like that though.

Grand Clashes:

I know someone who's done an incredible set of conversions of Magore's Fiends into Rippa's Snarlfangs. I don't think he'd be allowed to use them at a Grand Clash.

As far as I know other tournaments are supposed to enforce this rule as well - but I can't find any documentation to that effect, and to be honest your local store is probably not going to enforce such a rule.

From the Tournament Rules - Players - Miniatures

Minor conversions – modifications to
the miniatures to personalise them – may be permitted
(or even encouraged!) at the organiser’s discretion, but
must still allow for easy identification of the fighter
represented by the miniature. If a conversion is deemed
to be misleading by the organiser, or if a miniature is
damaged or assembled in such a way that it cannot easily
be identified, the player will not be allowed to use that
miniature: they must use an acceptable version of that

It's basically the organiser's choice, but its clearly worded to encourage their use in general. So conversions should, by default, be legal in these games.

Which fits with GW's general attitudes toward models and conversions.

The key part comes right before the paragraph you quoted:
“ Players must use the appropriate miniatures for their warband (the miniatures pictured on the
fighter cards).”

OP wants to use different figures to the stock package. It’s not the same as making minor modifications to the figures the warband came with.

It's going to be up to the TO. As I said I had no issue using idk eel riders as goblin wolf riders.
