Trying to help my son get a competitive 1000 pt list going. He has a couple things he really likes and trying to fit them in but I am just having a rough time as i am not as familiar with Tau as i should be. He plays against me (astra militarum) more than anything else but will be playing against Eldar, Tau, and Imperial knights too eventually. Below is the Battalion he wants to use. Broadsides and transports he doesn't own yet but i can always proxxy if needed. Any help would be much appreciated.

I think it's a good start. A couple of things to keep in mind. A Commander with Fusion Blasters is probably better inside a Coldstar Battlesuit, which grants them a base move of 20" and an advance of 40", which pairs very nicely with the Warlord Trait he's chosen that allows his Commander to advance and shoot without penalty. That ability to get in close whenever he wants to get the most out of his Fusion Blasters will be invaluable. I'm not sure if Up-Gunned is the best other Tenet to take. It gives Burst Cannons an additional -1 AP. Even though the Riptide, Hazard Suit and Stealth Drone have 'burst cannon' in the name, they are not actually "Burst Cannons". The Riptide's is called "Heavy Burst Cannon", the Hazard Suits' is called "Double-Barreled Burst Cannon", the Stealth Drone's is called "Long-Barelled Burst Cannon". Perhaps Turbo-Jets would be a better take. It would increase the movement of his jet-pack units, which he has a lot of.

Just found that out last night re-reading the faqs. Totally forgot i had this going. Got a lot of help figuring out his list. Going forward he is going with this list below. Allows him to focus on 3 objectives and fast enough to be able to choose domination OR engage on all fronts. Still going back and forth on other objectives to focus on, as a couple work, and the remora stealth drone is on the edge of staying, he wants to use it, it can get him a quarter he needs, but nothing in the list gives him any backup unless he just flys around shadowsun and behind buildings to sometimes have FNP. Oh, he also hasn't settled on a sept yet as he wants to be Farsight Enclaves but asking that rules question ended getting that forum locked (rules wise answer is still unclear). firewariors and fireblade deploy close enough to riptide to put their 6 drones by the riptide, if enemy has too much alphastrike power shadowsun can infiltrate next to the riptide as well to add 2 more drones as well as FNP.

Tau Battalion

Cadre Fireblade w/ 2x shield drones, warlord
Commander Shadowsun

5 man strike team w/ 2x shield drones
5 man strike team w/ 2x shield drones
5 man strike team
5 man strike team

Riptide w/Amplified ion accelerator, 2x SMS, Velocity tracker
3 man stealth battlesuits w/ 1 fusion blaster, 2 burst cannons
3 man stealth battlesuits w/ 1 fusion blaster, 2 burst cannons

1 remora stealth drone w/ 2 burst cannons

That second list is much cleaner and more balanced. I think it will do well.

That second list looks better, but I fear you dont have enough dakka.

I like that you have lots of mobile objective grabbers (Stealth Teams, Drones, Remora).

Broadsides are pretty cheap these days, and can now move + shoot without penalty to Heavy weapons.
