Hey Guys

Back at the hobby after about 7 years!.... Starting where I ended with a small contingent of Red Corsairs, a kill team + a few more bits, then we'll see where we go next.... unlikely to ever get played with so not looking at sticking to the rules to much with wargear etc....had the Idea for the bits needed for the Huron conversion couple of years now, but held off, but seeing loads of cool models and painting videos on youtube, and most recently the excellent Corsairs over on Ironsleet (and a global pandemic stopping me from going to the pub) pushed me to dip my toes back into the hobby, and I'm really enjoying getting the creative juices flowing again.

Finished painting the man himself last night, as with the others base could still use a bit more work, but I'll tie them all together in one go at the end most likely (or forget about it entirely?) ...........

Pleased with how he turned out, stole the weapons and backpack from the original model, but just gave him a body and head with some more heft to fit better with picture of him have in my head. Paint wise, pretty pleased how these guys turned out, not as glossy as picture makes out, tried few new things, like the painted damage and using a nice brown black Oil wash and cotten buds (a proper cheat!). Still more to learn, and without having to paint hundreds for a working army can go where I want.... 3 more guys in this squad to complete, then I'll try something else none power armour related :-) (edit - that didn't work out, see below)

Hi balloon_dog, welcome back to the hobby!

Huron and his corsairs look really amazing - the best interpretation I've seen of them! I remember sometime in 5th or 6th edition when it felt like every other WD battle report featured the same boring Red Corsairs army, and I always came away with the impression that they were too "clean" to be the piratical corsairs they were meant to represent.

These on the other hand, these are just glorious. Have an exalt.

I love both your custom work and the paint style.

Huron looks awesome, just like a modern version of the iconic model.

They look great. Properly dark and nasty.

I can see the original claw still in use - nice touch - can I ask what went into the rest of the conversion? Curious as to what the parts are.

Writing as a fellow Huron fan (though I mostly work on his pre-heresy (or at least pre-chaos) forces), that's a really nice take on him and his boys. Great conversions, and the skin looks quite nice.

spiralingcadaver is correct its one of the Gal Vorbak bodies, there was a couple of them as options, this one or the running body, this one had good pose to have the claw out from, (but a awkward backward jointed leg needing to be swapped).... like you see both the weapons (with most of arms... worked out really nicely :-) ) and the backpack are from the GW huron model, the head (and the leg swap for the backward one) is from the Indomitus Chaplain, beyond that, few skulls had lying around, and like I used on the whole squad some butchered Nighthaunt Chainrasps from a bits box bought off ebay to make suitable ragged cloaks for them.

Cheers guys... 3 more of the squad to paint up...

Oh, very cool use of the chainrasps, I assumed it was just sculpting and random chains. I might need to steal that...

Been working on the last three guys from corsairs squad... Pretty pleased how they turned out... Get proper pics of others tomorrow maybe... (get frustrated with this, may need to buy a cheap lightbox or something, lights in garage not up for it ;-) ) , but pretty proud of this guy, first time trying osl, it's clunky, but it's practice :-)

Really good for a first attempt! A couple of pointers though. Firstly, you want the glow to be stronger on the source, than on the nearby objects it's hitting - so you want either less of the face covered, or an ever so slightly greener tone. Or maybe more white on the weapon.
Secondly, you want a fuzzy edge where the light fades off rather than a hard edge, which you can only really achieve properly with either an airbrush, or blending.

Net result is that it looks a bit strong on the face here - but on the hands, shoulder pad trims, backpack etc you've got it spot on.

I think this is one of the few times I have looked at a corsairs army and wanted to start one. As everyone says, the gritty scheme fits them well. For me though it is the heraldic checkered pattern which sells them as "Those once loyal"

The Hereldry idea on the corsairs was stolen shamelessly from the corsairs over on https://ironsleet.com/2019/12/11/red-corsairs-task-force-primogenitor/ mine are but a pale comparison, they are awesome... (lots of good things over there)...

Yeah think you right, was bit over eager... watching couple more tutorials... I have went back and did both of those things you suggested, blew out highlights on the coils made them brighter and in comparison, put couple further green glazes on the face to knock it down a notch or two...

Had to go back a add to OSL to this guy with plasma pistol also, not quite so severe an effect.... I'll keep practicing :-)

That is, quite frankly, incredible. Just the simplest of changes and it looks absolutely amazing. Well done!

These look like they walked out of a John Blanche drawing, amazing stuff! The plasma glow on the last one works really well.

Stunning! The weathering is on point and the lighting effects are really cool. Nice basework as well.

So finished with my Red Corsairs for time being and onto something new.... thought may as well make a consolidated thread rather than a new on each time.
 
So beginning work on some Mortifactors, don't know a great deal about them (except SKULLS), but enjoyed their cameo in that one Ultramarine book.  Going slightly off-piste with my take.
 
But I painted up this guy first to practice the scheme... Let me know what you think.

The Thunderstone will drop Shango and his brothers at the heart of the enemy formation where he will send many to the Crossroads.

Formally of another name, but now claimed fully by Shango Bade. He was the one to lift the axe following the ending of Shangos previous during the 3rd war for Armageddon.

Within the Mortifactor inner circle he is considered to be one of the most powerful Captains the Loa has ever produced, and is noted for his anger as are all of his name.[/i][/font][/color]

First of my minis, for my Mortifactors Command, the inner circle or 'The Loa' hold closely to the beliefs of their homeworld, with it folding into their standing as part of the Imperium of Man and as Space Marines.  Based somewhat loosely on a mix of Vodou and the earlier African Religions such as Yoruba
 
The idea is that much like in voodoo ceremonies where people allow themselves to be 'visited' by spirits of Loa, the Command of the Mortifactors give themselves over to the 'spirits' or the character traits at least of the Pantheon.
 
this guy is Shango, or Bade as per Wikipedia 
 
Shango (Yoruba language: Ṣàngó, also known as Changó or Xangô in Latin America; and as Jakuta or Badé) is an Orisha, a type of spirit in Yoruba religion. Genealogically speaking, Shango is a royal ancestor of the Yoruba as he was the third Alaafin of the Oyo Kingdom prior to his posthumous deification. Shango has numerous manifestations, including Airá, Agodo, Afonja, Lubé, and Obomin.[1][2] He is known for his powerful axe. He is considered to be one of the most powerful rulers that Yorubaland has ever produced, and is noted for his anger.
 
So yeah got a whole pantheon to play with including a couple better know deities' to come, but as noted they straying a bit from what we know about the mortifactors but , whatever they my minis :-P
 
Pretty happy how the Kitbash turned out and painting while rough conveys what I wanted.

That's some rich lore. The patina makes for a great splash of color.

Well after a long wait for assault sprue and green stuff delivery am powering through some more characters, and have couple more troopers on go as well...

Here's WIP of Chief Librarian, and Chapter Master.... Still some smoothing of GS to do... but will be rough as still learning...

Mate, these are brilliant and super grimdark. Your colour work is really controlled and lovely; very reminiscent of colour-wash-over-ink style of early 40k art.

Getting donnie darko vibes in a good way from the chapter master. Excited to see paint on them!

Cheers, yeah just going all in on grimdark painting style, I was never patient enough when the style was all super clean vibrant edge highlights, they can look awsome, but Im too cack handed to do them well and would take far too long, if not done painting a guy in couple hours my eyes start wandering....

Anyway.... Not the leader, but got some paint on the Librarian first... slightly different colour scheme for lore reasons (see below), and trying to paint these tricky little vodou 'veves' the symblos of the spirtits these guys represent is super tricky.... need some of those magnifying glasses and a better desk light.. but hey ho.... still need to do the chapter symbol on shoulder, and the oil wash to dirty him up even more.. but we getting there...

While he had a great responsibility to the current crusade and a great power in gleaning the thoughts of the dead from their flesh, the next part was never pleasant and the drink would help remove the taste. Removing his skull Visaged helmet inscribed with the names of those to be worn by Kalfou before him he mentally prepared himself for this new battle reciting a Prayer to Bondye the Emperor on Earth to Protect him when he opened his mind to that beyond.

Ceremonial dagger in one hand and drink in the other he left his makeshift chamber and walked across the courtyard of the Arbite Precinct that was their latest Base of Operations to the Blackened and unmarked container by the back wall. Entering through the airlock he heard a low chanting overpowered by an unnerving sound at the same time quiet and loud, a low hum and a nerve shredding shriek. When the Inner lock door cycled open an otherworldly but now all too familiar sight greeted his eyes, Four of his brother Librarians stood at the cardinal points, their psychically attuned weapons pinned another being to the dark slab in the centre of the space. This creature the source of the unnatural sound made Kalfou's eyes water just to look at, constantly changing in shape and colour, first a startling pink, now a sickly blue. Kalfou grimaced and made the sign of the Aquilla. Placing his drink within easy reach he circled the creature till he was standing at what could charitably be called its head.

Raising the Ceremonial knife he channelled his will into its blade and began to cut. **






Chief Librarian for my Mortifactors, while the mortifactors commonly practice the eating of foes after battle, take a special person to consume and understand the barrange or vision and emotions from consuming parts of Daemons. Lucky Guy :-)

Inspiration for this guy again from Haitian Vodou, Kalfu who among his patronages includes Destruction and sorcery:
As per Wikipedia :

Kalfu, Kalfou, Kafou, or Carrefour (literally crossroads - see crossroads in mythology)
is one of the petro aspects of the spirit Papa Legba in Haitian Vodou.
He is often envisioned as a young man or as a demon; his color is red
and he favors rum infused with gunpowder. He is often syncretized with
Satan.

If anything, the start you have made on the Mortifactors is even better. Such a great grimy style, without being dull and boring.

These boys are coming out proper grimdark. Great theme you’ve chosen and the atmospheric style really works for them. Keep them coming!

Well another character down, this is the current Chapter Master Ogun (haven't done any flavour text this time, I'll get to it) and his little pal....

Got some more WIP shots below it as well, showing some of the normal marines, mixture of bolter and assault marines... just enough to have each character have a little body guard of two guys... so it looks neat when I eventually make these guys a display base....

Below below that is the WIP for my Chief Chaplain, for a Chapter like the Mortifactors worshipping death and the dead like they do, the Chaplain holds as much sway over the chapter as the Chapter Master (if not more) so had to have a similarly imposing model....
