Welp, last hobby forum I posted things to died, so figured I'd move over to somewhere a little more populated. While I like painting, my motivation to paint comes and goes, and then when I finish something I've actually got to remember to take photos of it for posting. I find that actually having a blog helps with that motivation though. I've got a random assortment of minis that I've collected over the years, have a couple of concurrent painting things, and always see nice shiny things to buy, so this blog may become a random assortment of things. Who knows.

What I'm currently working on is a repaint of some BFG I got, probably 10-15 years ago now. Painted it terribly, I was younger then, played in infrequently and stored it not that well. It'd been sitting in a box for a while, and after replaying some BFG Armada (1), I got the urge to paint it again, now I've got a little more skill to throw down. I had some Necrons on the to-paint table, but the release of 9th, and trickle of new Necron things hadn't really inspired me to paint them, so some BFG was a welcome distraction. It's also a nice change from the last painting project, which was some LOTR minis.

I've been trying a few things with these, mostly in painting the bases and using some sponging to get nebulae effects, and I'm pretty happy how they turned out. Hope you all enjoy!

My painting, circa 15 years ago

The whole fleet together

Now with less paint

Step 1, add magnets and undercoat

Step 2, paint the rest of the mini

The green and white is the classic BFG look, and its nice to paint a few other coloured ships as well; they can be ships from other Battlefleets that have broken through the Chaos blockades of the sector. I'm also happy with how the bases are turning out.

There's about seven more cruisers, five more escorts and then a Battleship to paint, so plenty more should be in the next update!

In space nobody can hear you paint! Quick update, got a few more ships finished and pretty pictures to show off. All of the things in the gothic (green) scheme is now finished; this was an Emperor Battleship, few more cruisers and last of the escorts. All that's left to do now are some space stations, a Mars Battlecruiser and two Dauntless light cruisers

Emperor Battleship, showing its good side. Somewhere, somehow I've lost the left hand side engine covering; so it'll just have to go without / pretend its battle damage.

Comparison with a Battleship, Cruiser and Escorts (Frigate and Destroyer).

Revised group shot of what is painted.

Also on the painting table are some launch bay assets; fighters and bombers. I think when these were bought originally they came on the old 25x10mm epic bases. Those have long since been lost or damaged, and I had to scrounge up some 20x20mm bases instead. No WIPs of the bombers, just some shots of them and a comparison to the Emperor Battleship. Very nice work, look forward to seeing the stations finished. Even more so the Dauntlesses though, dont know why but I have always had soft spot for those cute little cruisers (even after getting 7 of them vaped in one campaign game).

Keep up the good work! Any plans to expand your fleets further?

I've got a soft spot for swords. I remember them getting work done for me. Even if that was flying through bomber waves to clear the path for bigger ships. No plans to expand any further. I've got a couple of chaos ships I picked up a few years back to paint up as a (smaller) opposing force. To scratch my space ship painting itch I've got some Dropfleet Commander; and potentially a gaming itch as well.

I've just finished painting the last of the ships, with only bases and engine glows left to do. More pretty pics coming up soon.

So I finished painting the last of the BFG Imperials a while ago, I just never got around to uploading the photos. This was painting the stations, bombers, and engine glows for all the ships. I didn't take WIP photos of the stations or bombers though. For a first time trying out some engine glows (as part of this painting project), I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. There was some room on the Emperor Battleship to try some OSL-type stuff, and I'm pretty happy with the result.

I did try some green engine glows, to try and have some different effects, but green engine glow on a greed ship is .... a bit too much green.

Whole Battlefleet shot.

As a Christmas gift for a friend I re-painted a POP Assault Marine. This is my second time doing this, as I painted three last year.

I had grand plans of painting a bunch of Necrons over the Christmas break, but never really made any massive in-roads into them. I split an Indomnitus box with a mate earlier in the year, and after I assembled them they were just sitting around. I painted a few up for a tournament a couple of weeks back, but the bulk are still unpainted. Painting for me is usually something to do after / to unwind from work. So, being on break, there's been less of an incentive (or a need to unwind), hence I've painted less. I'm trying out a new technique on painting blades, and am pretty happy with this (as a first go). Good think I had plenty of green lying around.

As you can see there's a lot more Necrons coming up in this blog (though one of those things is not like the other......)

Update time, long overdue!

I've managed to nearly finish all of my Necron stuff, only Illuminor Szeras is left to go, so I've made a fair dent into the miniature backlog already this year.

I've continued to work on the layering / shading technique, and pretty happy with how that's going. Also used nearly a pot of the GW Valhallan Blizzard, which also provides a nice snow effect. The ice on the bases is a very watered down blue wash over some Martian Ironearth painted white; an effect I'm also pretty happy with

I pre-ordered a copy of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City over the weekend as well, so that'll be added to the painting backlog soon.

Thanks to all the people watching and posting comments, enjoy the pretty pictures below!

Painted Necron half of Indomnitus

Painted army that I'll be taking to a tournament this weekend

Some upcoming 6mm historical stuff that's on the to-paint list. This is a bunch of Baccus 6mm Republic Romans. There's some Carthaginians for them to fight (who aren't in this photo, but there's an equal amount of them!). Haven't painted 6mm historicals before, so this should be interesting. I need to get some materials to make bases with, and probably a few long sticks so that I can paint a bunch of strips at a time.

Oh boi, I have not updated this blog in a hot minute. Work has been crazy, so there hasn't been as much time / motivation to assemble or paint things, and even less time / motivation to update this. I've had some time off work and been stuck at home, which means its time for a long overdue painting session, and blog update. Brace yourselves for a variety of things below.

I've been working on some attempts at wet blending, and painting some Skorpekh Destroyer blades. This was a relatively fun experience, and I think it turned out pretty good. There were a few teething issues as I think my wet palette was a little too wet, and the paint got a bit too runny. Draining some of the excess water seemed to fix that; lesson learned for next time. Below are the wet blended attempts (right) compared to some earlier minis that were painted with a layering technique (left). I feel that some of the transitions are a bit better, and it gets to some much darker hues.

A weeks worth of work on necron minis (I only repainted the murder chicken blades though).

I bought two Impulsors and two Redemptor Dreadnaughts last year, so figured I should at least buy a few more things to round out a 2k list (which is how all projects start).......... I was also lucky enough to snag a copy of Cursed City at pre-order. They've both been assembled, and can now gather dust until I've got enough time to work on them. They should be pretty interesting projects. I'm undecided what the paint the space marines as. Something that doesn't include yellow (insert nightmare flashbacks to painting an empire Talabecland army.....)

I love the poseability of the redemptor kit, and found it was pretty easy to magnetise the weapon options.

I've also repainted an old monolith that was in the collection of minis I got off a friend. This did involve disassembling it, stripping the paint, reassembling it, filling a few gaps, then finally repainting it. I think it turned out pretty good, and will save me having to get one of the new ones!

Not pictured above, but I've also got a few new Tau models (Broadsides and Commanders) with a plan to rebuild an old 4th ed Tau army I had. They've all been disassembled, stripped, cleaned and reassembled, and are also sitting in a box waiting to be painted. With the new minis I've bought, it should round out at about 2k points. Magnetising the battlesuits was also pretty simple, and I made a custom dawn blade for a commander farsight from a spare necron overlord that was lying around (because why not.....).

There are a few more necron things I've got left to paint, which may be what I work on next. I'm about to start boxing up things in preparation for moving house, so I'll probably only have a few things out to work on, and start any new (big) projects post move. In the meantime, let me know if you've got any suggestions for space marine colours and wet blending techniques.

It seems you're getting distracted by the wrong scale. Get back at doing ship!!!

Thanks for the comments Malika2! There's some different scale stuff coming up, but not spaceship scale (yet).

Its Spooktober update time, so only fair that I post some Necrons that I've been working on for a bit.

First up is Illuminor Szeras. Pretty happy with how he turned out. I repainted the carapace and armour as I wasn't originally happy with it. I was worried the paint would be to thick, but think it turned out fine in the end. I tried to do a more colourful transition for the melting flesh stuff, but ended up going for a flesh to green transition (which ties it in with the other glowing green that appears on the model).

Last year I got some old Necrons off a friend of mine. He was downsizing his collection, and I offered them a new home. Over the last year I've been repainting them, and converting a few. I've finally finished with that process.

Before

After

Converted Flayed one. Its a warrior cut up with some repositioning, and some claws from some spare Ad-Mech kits a friend of mine had. Pretty happy with how they turned out.

Some converted Deathmarks. I had some spare Deathmark torsos, heads and guns. The rest is converted old warriors. Pretty happy with how they turned out. From a distance / on the table they look good enough.

A friend of mine got the new AoS starter box, and split the Stormcast half with me, so I guess that's another painting project for the future.

Also on the to-do list are my 6mm historical Romans. I cut out some bases for them, and blue tacked them down to get a feel for what looks good. It'll be a change painting small things again.

I've got 14 more Necron things left to paint (three characters, one Immortal, and some Lychguard), and then I'm done with them (and probably painting 40k for a bit). Once they're done, I'm sure I'll have a whole army / collection shot.

I love the variety of things you have going on on this blog. Your necrons look really cool, and I'd like to see what you can do with those 6mm guys.

Well, somehow its 2022. No idea where the time has gone, I'm still mentally stuck in March 2020. Painting has been slow recently, but I have hit the big milestone of finishing all of my Necrons. Or, at least, all the Necrons that I currently have (who knows, maybe there'll be more in the future).

There wasn't much left to paint to hit that milestone, with only a unit of 10 Lychguard, a Chronomancer and a Lord conversion (no photos of those last two though).

All together now!

I've also started work on the 6mm Romans. I'll re-base them onto something else (that's more uniform in shape) later. They are indeed very small. But luckily that means detail painting doesn't really matter. They'll be my next project that I work on / finish, which shouldn't take too long.

I got an airbrush for Christmas, so once I get an air compressor I'll be sure to start trying to airbrush things!
