With pandemic measures in place, life shut down, and now working from home, I've gotten back into Heavy Gear in a big way, and am starting a new log. I've accumulated a vast amount of new HG stuff, and have a goal to get it all built and painted by the end of next year.

And for some of it, we're going old school...

To kick this one off, since I had once of each, I decided to build both an old-school mid-90's RAFM 1/87 scale and current 1/44 scale Crossbow Grizzly together.

The various parts

This is out of a pack of several carded RAFM's I'd managed to get my hands on.

Some of the other RAFM's

Current scale stuff built earlier in the summer

Existing Northern Guard army at the start of the summer

Existing Southern Republican Army

This was a PAK (Port Arthur Korps) army, but the Tigers (painted guys) have been moved back to the Northern Guard, the HT-72's (big hoveratanks) are being split off to form an actual CEF force, and the rest will be a NuCoal Self Defense Force list.

And of course, here's the Peace River stuff at the start of summer.

Small home game I ran at 150TV with the current Blitz rules using only what I had painted.

Nice! I think you can safely call yourself a mega fan. Do you have any of the plastics or is this an all metal collection? How much experience do you have with the current rules? I've only played two actual games since the beta rules came out.

I have no idea what this game is but it reminds me of the mech warrior video games I played back in the early 90s and I dig it. The muted colour schemes look great and are easy enough to differentiate which I'm guessing helps in play. The industrial terrain pieces look great on the table too.

The unpainted stuff looks very promising. I'll be keeping an eye on this!

While the tabletop games pre-dated it, Heavy Gear actually had a pc game back then as well that Activision licensed and created because they lost the Mechwarrior license after iirc the second game.

A friend picked up some of these years ago, but it didn't go anywhere. Your collection is awesome! Stompy bots are where it's at. All the heavy metal makes it that much better.

The only plastics I've got thus far is the Caprice starter box, which I have yet to assemble. They're the only ones I think that look as good as the art/resin/metals, though the Peace River plastics actually aren't bad, but I have a bunch of PR metals already, and there's just something cooler about metals, particularly with mechs. With respect to the current rules, I've been playing solo games with them at home, but unfortunately don't have a gargantuan amount of experience with them or with actual opponents. That said, I think the current rules are the best they've ever been for the purposes of a miniatures combat game of roughly a dozen models a side, that did a lot to get me back into HG.

It should definitely remind people of 90's Mechwarrior, Heavy Gear was quite contemporary, and as noted Activision picked it up as a replacement when they lost the MW license. The table setup there is highly inspired by the Heavy Gear 1 intro cinematic.

Here's the currently assembled collection of Northern 1/87 scale gears. I've still got a Hunter to build, and an Assault Hunter without arms or gun still on the card. RAFM also apparently forgot to pack a rocket pod for the White Cat too, but that's an easier issue to address than the Assault Hunter.

Back-Front/Left-Right
Grizzly, Crossbow Grizzly, Assault Grizzly, Hunter Commando, Kodiak, Grizzly, Armored Hunter, Predator Jaguar, Jaguar, White Cat. Apologies for the blurry photos

Slightly less crappy shot of the Jags & White Cat. Note that the Predator Jaguar has a different head to the normal Jaguar.

White Cat & Kodiak comparisons between different scales.

Cool! The sliding scale between gear classes is really evident with the side by side comparisons. It's nice to see others get excited about the original minis and post their efforts.

If you get the chance, could you measure the heights of your RAFM hunters to the top of the heads? (Not including the base or antenna). I don't have any built and i was curious for 3d printing purposes.

I haven't built the normal hunter yet, I'll check when I do, the Armored Hunter is ~1.75" tall maybe 1.8" depending on how it's measured, not including the height of the base or the backpack v-engine/mortar.

Black Talons

CEF! I repurposed what originally was a PAK force into this TN9150 force representing the 2nd CEF invasion of Terra Nova, I'd like to pick up another HPC64 and a couple more squads of GREL's, a couple 67's and 68's, and run a TN1913 1st earth invasion list as well eventually.

No worries or rush. I don't have any assembled hunters but I was able to find an incomplete one (not sure what variant) in my bits pile that came with my own haul and measured the height to the top of the waist where the torso connects. It came out to 25mm and I scaled my 3d print to that height. I wouldn't mind you double checking that just in case since you actually know which ones you have.

You really do have an impressive collection across the various blitz lines. Was your goal to have a decent sized playable blitz force for every faction?

As a result of this thread, I may finally be motivated enough to build my minimum size squad of three hunters and complete my own RAFM lineup. Yeah, some of the Jaguars have a different head (Arrow, Fire, and Flak); I didn't recall that but it goes back to the RPG art when the minis were coming out. I was missing one and had some adventures trying to recast them myself using home green stuff press casting. The results were less than stellar but luckily Ashley saved the day for me.

Cool yeah I'll doublecheck the hunter when I build it, might be this weekend. At this point, the goal is definitely to have decent sized forces for each faction. In part, it's just because I have a weird fetish for assembling small metal mechs, I just find the process satisfying and fun. The fact that most every unit actually also feels functional and useful and easy to find uses for in the current rules also helps, very little feels like dead weight or total garbage. Ideally, when game stores open back up and events can be held and whatnot, I'd like to try and use the various armies as demo armies to get people into playing, we'll see if that ever comes to pass.

Glad I can provide motivation for other projects however!

Here's everything currently assembled for NuCoal, I need to fix the Voltigeur barrels. I'll have a couple Jerboas to add to this that aren't assembled yet. After getting the Arbalestiers (big RAFM sized dudes in back, NuCoals equivalent of King Cobra or Kodiak), the only things I think I'm looking for to complete this army is a couple Chevalier Hellfires. The addition of the Fulgerant (LPA armed) variant to the Chasseur MKII was neat, so I converted those out of CEF Frame LPA's (they're the two right in the center behind the Voltigeur).

I'm debating whether to make these guys, Peace River, Black Talons, or the CEF as my first foray back into Heavy Gear painting. I would start with the Southern and Northern armies I've actually already got some progress on, but I did those with the Reaper Heavy Gear paint set, and there are a couple specific metallics in there I'm trying to find replacements for that I haven't nailed down yet, primarily Durasheet Alloy 61122, Skunkworks Gunmetal 61123, and to a lesser extent Drillbit Metal 61132, they're not on Ebay at all, Reaper isn't any help in trying to match them to anything in the existing line, and I haven't found an good alternative yet. Additionally, the time investment with the schemes on those forces was pretty extreme, and I want to see if I can do at least a couple forces in faster and easier with less detail picked out in different colors but maybe more drybrushing to highlight detail or something.

It's good to hear that the current ruleset isn't sporting as much dead weight in list building as previous iterations. Regarding your painting question, I'd say work on whichever two factions you have already painted most (looks like the polar forces from the pics above). You'll have *THE* iconic forces in original HG to play games with and potentially entice new players with. The other upside is that you can easily transition into Rafm scale if you do that.

I wouldn't branch out from those two until you have at least 50% over in points whatever the recommended starting game size is so that you have variety in the forces and are not fielding the exact same thing every time.

So, I still haven't gotten that terrain painted, but I have been assembling!

Here's the current-scale (non-RAFM) Heavy Gear collection to date with the exception of some infantry, some Caprician Accos, a Strike Cobra, and some older era southern tanks I'm going to turn into terrain. Some painting is obviously in order.

SRA

Black Talons

Peace River

Northern Guard

NuCoal

CEF & Caprice

And finally...Utopia

To round this out, I'd like to get 4 squads + 4teams of infantry + sufficient APCs for each faction. Additionally, a Utopian MAR-DK, another Caprice army box, more recon gears in general, a few more loadout variants of stuff like Grizzlies and Vultures and Gladiators, some Elans/Antelopes, and a slew of both CEF and Humanist/NuCoal hovertanks.

Ideally, I'd like to paint everything for each faction in one go. I don't think that's going to happen, but I still want to get that terrain done here shortly

In retrospect, given how long it took me to actually assemble my Utopia stuff, I wish I'd just waited and picked up the Plastics. The plastic Utopian starter gets you the same number of drones as I've got up there, but double the number of Armigers, for less than half the price. Now, the Polar plastics were awful looking to my eyes, but the Utopian plastics look every bit as good as the metals really (and I think the Caprice plastics are straight up better than the old metal/resin iterations), so I'm kinda kicking myself there after realizing they work out to be less than $2/model in the starter

A different scale entirely...

Big Kodiak.

Here with a RAFM and current scale iterations.

The torso is basically just sitting on top of the legs there and resting against the back of the shelf, that thing is stupid top heavy. I need to get everything basecoated, then painted, than I can finish the rest of assembly with the armor skirts and climbing handles and grenade bits and stick the pilot inside. Gonna use that $2 unfinished wood plaque as a base, I'll sand off the rough edges and set up some sort of terrain on it.

Cool! That's the classic garage kit, right? I'd say go epic with the base and buy some sort of cheap sci-fi tank you and wreck part of it for the base. That way you can Captain Morgan pose the Kodiak's leg on it.

Alas, if I hadn't already glued the hip joints...

For as poseable as the arms are, the legs are fairly static, the knee joints are prepositioned, and the hips, while allowing some posability in terms of how far/close you want the legs to be front-to-back, do lock the model into that "leaning to the left" pose with the way they angle into the legs, and the feet only fit a very limited arc (e.g. you can't have a foot pointing away at a 45* angle for instance). You're basically stuck mostly with the lower body stance you see in the pictures on DP9's website.

That said, the kit is fantastic, for a 25 year old kit, it's pretty damn clean and goes together really nicely. I'm actually a big fan of this kit. What's amusing is that this same kit is advertised in the back of some of the old books like the vehicle compendiums, and it was $200 in 1996, about ~$350 today. In 2021? They're still $200 (well, $180 currently for a couple more weeks), and I picked it up for $143 on sale last year from DP9

Honestly my only issue with the kit is that it lacks the MRP or a way to really mount one. I kinda know how I'd like to try and mount one, high enough to allow the left arm to clear underneath, but I just don't know of an appropriate bit. I tried looking for some Gunpla bits to see if I could find an appropriate rocket pod, but Gunpla bits don't appear to be a thing curiously, or I'm just blind.

More RAFM stuff.

Snagged a Desert Sharks box, beat up but seemingly complete.

It even had an extra arm and Snub Cannon for the Assault Hunter I'd picked up earlier that turned out to be armless, though it's still missing a lefty. Got the original round-head assembled and in there too.

For those asking about dimensions earlier, the Roundhead is 1.8" foot to top of head (2" to top of v-engine), the square-heads are 0.2" shorter for both, the Roundhead has taller legs.
