Hello everybody. First of all let me say what a great forum this is for someone like me who's just gettinig back into the hobby after a long absence.

I chose Imperial Guard for a couple of reasons: I am doing this on a tight budget and they seem easy to proxy with less expensive minis. Also they are super cool.

My first platoon is made up of Raumjager infantry from Wargames Atlantic, with some heavy weapon team spares off ebay, and some and 3d printed apc's that I stuck lego wheels and autocannons onto to count as Taurox. I have a command squad nearly done just need to paint the banner.

For fluff I am saying they are a PDF to explain the non-standard wargear. The models have pretty good imitations of plasma guns and flamers, but the assault rifles can count as autoguns for fluff and lasguns on the table. I am thinking a knight world as I really want a knight for xmas. Also a line in the core book caught my imagination, about the knight worlds in the imperium nihilus keeping the watchfires burning.

These guys can be a 'cavalry' division of a knight world pdf, nicknamed the elephant riders 'cos those autocannons look like tusks (and it's an easy symbol to paint and most 'cos its the name of an album by the band Clutch).

Next up, a squad of armoured sentinels courtesy of russian minis game robogear

Also got some of these to strip, the 3rd ed Ogryns. I bought some 2nd ed too but these are a better scale and less cartoony

This is a 1/30 scale 3d printed prototype model of an APC from Aliens that I am goiing to make into a CRASSUS. I've added heavy bolters and I think the front turret can be twin heavy flamers - i'll just paint them red maybe.

Once all that is done I am going to try and turn a couple of these into leman russ tanks

Great start already! I like the infantry and the tanks look cool. You nailed the pdf feel I think. Looking forward to seeing how the leman russ tanks work out.

Cheers mate! I am really enjoying the hobby again, in fact even more so than when I was a kid, when painting seemed like a chore; now it's a pleasure.
Not had a game since 2nd edition so can't wait to get them on the table

Here's a squad of Armoured Sentinels completed. These are the Robogear ones, with a little bit of conversion, they cost about £25 for all three. I have got 3 more, plus 6 to convert to scouts and 3 to use as powerlifters!
They come with passable plasma cannons, and I magnetized those along with some lascannons from a heavy weapons squad sprue. The tubes for hunter-killer missiles were also included and I added some green stuff on the ends for missiles. The smoke grenade launchers are biro pen ink tubes.

Here's the Command Squad for the infanrty platoon. Might do some more work on the banner but it's okay for now, plenty more to work on. I am currently assembling those Ogryns and tanks and painting some ratlings.

Hey mate,
Some really nice work in here. Love the alternate minis, good sourcing of bits and pieces there!

The 2e ogryns are some of my favourite minis of all time, goofy faces and all, so I'm excited to see what you do with those!

Are your bases just glued sand at the moment? Painting it up or even just throwing a brown wash over it might help break up the colour a bit and provide a bit of contrast and interest.

Keep it up!

Thanks, the last tank kit I put together was the original predator, and this one is a little more fiddly. I have 3 now and bought some unofficial 3d printed leman russ turrets off ebay to stick on top. I reckon people will be more forgiving of proxy models if the guns at least look right so they can tell what they are.

Thanks I have 9 of the ogryns so far, hoping to pick up 3 more for maximum utility on the battlefield. Hoping they get a buff with the new IG codex!

Yes it's just sand for the bases; I was going to paint it green but then I liked that it complimented the colour scheme a bit. However you are right it needs something else... they are not desert fighters, more down in the mud kinda guys, so the brown wash may be just the thing. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out.

I wanted a break from building for a while, and just something nice and simple to paint, so I did these guys

Then I got back to building. I had a kit and a 3d printed leman russ turret to work with. The Hobby Boss 1:48 scale US Korean War tank was too small when I built it, so I had to bulk it up. I split the lower hull and put in two cassette tape cases, keeping a cassette in one for ballast (a copy of Metallica's Kill 'em all), then glued on some lollipop sticks and a bit of an ice cream tub lid and some sprues for a dozer blade, otherwise the front would be flat.

I am planning to do some sponsons next, and magnetise a few more weapons variations. I have two more of these to build. The kits were £38 for all 3 and the turrets about £15, so i've saved a few quid. The only official citadel part is the hull flamer I found in my bits box.

Hey mate, nice update!

Ratlings look great, they are neat little models that fit well into the desert scheme.

Neat use of parts for the Lemon Rust, interested to see how that paints up!

Love the concept for this army. Weirdly enough I have a similar concept in mind (using a mix of old GW Imperial Guard and 3rd party to make a PDF).

The Wargames Atlantic troopers look great, ad those Taurox proxies are really effective. Love the alternate sentinels as well!

The metal Ogryns look awesome. Looking forward to seeing them painted, and I love the classic ratlings!

Second the suggestion of an eartshade wash or something for the sand, I think it would add some depth of colour to the base, and also help hold the sand in place. If you like the colour as is, I would still recommend a watered down PVA coat to keep the sand in place for the future! Looking forward to seeing future updates.

Thanks! it's definately going to be base coated black, don't fancy trying to get a brush in all those fiddly track bits.
I'll probably build 3 and paint them as a batch. I keep reading 40k is all about efficiency

Thanks that's very encouraging. Regarding the bases, I may just try a few different things when I get a chance and see what works, maybe even post here for opinions.

In the meantime I may try a character model. Although I am a paint to play kinda guy, I am interested to see how well I can paint if I concentrate on one figure and take my time. I have an old space marine captain that would make a good inquisitor.

I have finished painting the CRASSUS ARMOURED TRANSPORT, for which I have used a 1/30 scale prototype 3d printed model of the APC from Aliens.
I had to go with 2 x twin heavy bolters 'cos thats all thats on the datasheet now, but I magnetized them in case they ever allow more options or I want to use it for something else.

I am happy with the colour but not the finish, it's too glossy thanks to the strong tone wash, so i'll spray on some matt varnish? dunno, never used it before.

As you may be able to tell, i'm not really bothering with highlights, just letting the ink do the work. In the new parlance, all i'm after is 'battle ready', which is why I have based these CRASSUS passengers black, makes it a quicker paint job:

Those are proper Heavy Metal, the squad probably weighs more than a Harlequin army.

I have built an assault squad from the Raumjager kit. I bought an Orlock gang to use the shotguns - the orlocks themselves will be used for a future project - but they were not right, but thankfully a gun in the jager kit was suitable after sawing off and drilling the barrel. The flamers in the kit are proper good and I had to use some. The 'vox caster' backpack was also in there, and the grenade backpack is from an AM heavy weapons sprue.

The sarge has as an Orlock powerfist, knife and head.

I may use these as Combat Engineers too, and plan to do a whole assualt platoon once the new codex is released and I can see what's possible.

Update

Firstly, I've painted the Ogryn squad. I am happy with how the black undercoat turned out; it didn't really make it a much faster job as there were lots of light skin areas to go over, but I left in some black lines that help dileanate areas these chunky funsters. They really were a pleasure to paint; great models with lots of character.

@Da Boss - I used PVA/water mix to seal the sand on the bases, it really works, although I have no idea if I was doing it right (I ended up dipping them in a solution). I decided to stick with the green rims/plain sand as I like it with the colour scheme, and I reckon it won't look too out of place on most tables.

Also I love how they look from above - and lets face it, this is how we see models most of the time when they are on the table.

Here they are posing in front of their count as CRASSUS ARMOURED TRANSPORT - I really need to do a priest and commissar to ride along.

Secondly I finIshed building the 3 leman russ', although they lack sponsons. have them magnetized for a few turret load outs.
Buying some Desert Yellow undercoat spray is really going to speed things up from now on.

Finally here's the next thing, a platoon of Iron Core from Wargames Atlantic - count as Scions, with 3d printed melta guns, Raumjager plasma, and their own sniper rifles with the ends sawn off doing an impression of hot shot volley guns. The guy with the antenna is the vox caster, with a normal assualt rifle (count as hot shot las).

They will be getting the yellow undercoat treatment, and should be an easy, power armour-esqe paintjob.

I have sihgned up to a GT in December, which has suddenly given me a focus for this army. A theme emerged while I was writing a list - Eolian Desert Fighters - so I have a list now of models to build and paint.

Unfortunately I won't be taking the CRASSUS, as although alternate models are allowed, the TO advised me replicating Forge World stuff can sometimes cause problems, so best to leave it out.

What I will be bringing is 6 scout sentinels. The plan is to use another Robogear kit:

I need to make one of it's rocket launchers into a multi-laser. I am thinking more this:

than this:

but I do have some spare lascannons so that's an option....

Meanwhile I am very excited to have ordered some of these guys to use as Death Riders:

Thanks to Arbitorian for the idea (from one of his old armies in the gallery). Check out his his youtube channel - it's awesome.

Cheers. The idea was to do a big army relatively cheaply, and have it be a bit different but still recognisable and playable at tournaments.

The scions platoon is almost done, just need to do a banner for the command squad. Hopefully it's obvious what all the weapons are.

The Leman Russ are also finished and i'll hopefully get some pics up later on. I've got a better camera now and may re-photograph some of the rest too, maybe do an army-so-far shot later in the week.

The Leman Russ squadron are almost complete; just need to add sponsons. Everything is magnetized too so I can have 3 demolishers or 3 gatling cannon if needed. I am still finding taking decent photos hard!

Looking great. I really sympathize and respect the challenge GW model costs impose on would be players. Great to see when people really work to make their custom models match the universe look and feel

Cheers RegularGuy.

Here's the latest, my standard bearers for the infantry and scion command squads. The poles are spears from a feudal japan sprue I got free on the cover of Wargames Illustrated (the arm with rifle was from the same mag, when they gave away ww2 marines).

Well this army is far finished (what army ever is?) but I've decided to call it a day on this blog. I'll post in the showcase section when i've got my General done - he's going to be riding a sandworm

It was a useful first experience of posting pics of minis online and getting feedback but I find myself working on a few different things at once, and vehicle conversions are what I want to blog about, so here's a new thread:
