Hey guys, I've been working on a 1,500 pt list as a 'go to' list to bring for games until the 9th codex drops. I'll also be looking to make a 2,000pt version. For financial reason I don't use FW units, though I know there are some optimal choices. Tell me what you think.

HQ: 2

Sorcerer 115pts
MoS
Warlord - Master of Diversion
Jump Pack
Force Axe
Delightful Agonies/Prescience

Master of Possession 95pts
MoS
Cursed Earth/Infernal Power

Troops: 3

5 CSM 80pts
MoS
1 Autocannon
Champ BP/CS

5 CSM 80pts
MoS
1 Autocannon
Champ BP/CS

5 CSM 80pts
MoS
1 Autocannon
Champ BP/CS

Elites: 2

1 Greater Possessed 65pts
MoS

10 Possessed 200pts
MoS

Heavy Support: 3

3 Obliterators 315pts
MoS

3 Obliterators 315pts
MoS

5 Havocs 150pts
MoS
4 Lascannons

Any thoughts on the current list, or what to add to take it to 2,000pts would be appreciated.

Eye of Terror

Some thoughts.

I'm not playing 9th just yet, still under lockdown. I've been trying to figure out what a 9th edition list is actually going to look like.

You have 3 CSM squads with Autocannons along with 6 Obliterators and a Lascannon Havoc squad. Obviously, you're going shooty.

Have you thought about objectives and how you're going to control them?

It feels like you're going to win games by winning shootouts and knocking other people off objectives. As Alpha Legion, you're going to have an advantage at 12"+, but is it enough for what you will need to do?

I like the Possessed but worry it's not enough melee. The popular lists right now seem to be mobile, I'm concerned you won't have what you need to win combats.

At 1500 points, you're not going to be facing huge armies. I'd be interested to know how this list performs.

In recent games I dropped a squad of Obliterators for another squad of Havocs and a Helbrute with Lascannon/Missile launcher. The firepower of the Obliterators and the melee threat of the Possessed have been strong distractions, but when people start to catch on the 5 man squads don't last long. The problem is Cultists wouldn't hold the point any better. In the last few games I've scored enough early points that by the time I start getting kicked off of objectives I'm already a decent amount of points ahead.

Hello! I play a list very similar to your's, but with fewer Oblits. I have found the Possessed just don't cut it in melee without Word Bearer strats. I would try dropping an oblit squad since you can only buff one to the nines anyway. Maybe try fielding a winged Daemon Prince instead of the sorcerer? I've tried raptors, chosen, more havocs, and helbrutes/defilers/venomcrawlers (AKA the rest of my collection) but nothing seems to be capable of going toe-to-toe with my local opponents (SM of different flavors and IG mostly).

another thing you could try is using a 30-man cultist squad to hold an objective and conceal your obliterators.

Cursed Earth is tempting but I find it hard to stay that close to my possessed, and even sometime oblits, with the MoP. I take mutated invigorations everytime since we can no longer reroll the weapon characters on fleshmetal guns.

Best of luck in the 9th games! Hopefully our new codex drops soon.

This is the current list I've been using

1500pts
Alpha Legion

HQ:2
Sorcerer 115pts
Jump Pack
MoS
Delightful Agonies/Prescience
Hydra's Wail

Master of Possession 95pts
MoS(Maybe MoK)
Cursed Earth/Infernal Power

Troops: 3
6 CSM 94pts
Heavy Bolter

6 CSM 94pts
Heavy Bolter

6 CSM 94ptss
Heavy Bolter

Elites: 3
10 Possessed 200pts
MoS(Maybe MoK)

1 Greater Possessed 65pts
MoS(Maybe MoK)

1 Helbrute 110pts
Missile Launcher/Lascannon

Heavy Support: 3
3 Obliterators 315pts
MoS

5 Havoks 150pts
4 Lascannon
1 Flamer
MoS

5 Havoks 160pts
4 Missile Launcher
Plasma Pistol/Power Axe
MoS

I'm thinking about dropping the Greater Possessed. He helps a bit with getting the Possessed the extra pip of strength to do work against armor, but the Havoks and Obliterators seem to handle that. I thought about another Helbrute or make enough room for a squad of Bikers.

@Warptide I tend to have the Master of Possession chase the Possessed around and buff them. I don't have much problem with keeping him in range. A 30 man cultist blob is a thought I may revisit.

Hey! It's been a little while... how's it going with your Alpha Legion? Since this post I've played a fair bit more with my own AL, mostly 1K and 2K. I enjoy a bit squad of possessed to renascent infiltrate around the board, mostly as a shield for the oblit bomb. So I heartily approve their use! If you use the RI strat than the greater possessed feels a bit out of place. He does seem cheap for his incredible stats and looks great, so I wouldn't blame you for taking him.

Havocs are great, and if you keep them out of LoS until the oblits drop I've found opponents are too worried about other threats to deal with them. Still a bit squishy for 150 points so they're usually the first thing I drop if I need points, especially considering that the oblits target the biggest threats instead. .

I've been enjoying CSM terminators quite a bit. The various loadouts are fun to play with. I didn't magnetize lightning claws and don't have enough combi-plas... I have heard that those are the best. I settled for magnetizing power swords/axes/fists and combi-flamers/meltas.

Helbrutes are great but I've found I prefer an all-infantry style list. My tanks tend to all die on turn 1 and helbrutes are no exception. Someday I will get my 2x powerfist and 2x heavy flamer helbrute into combat...

Can't go wrong with bikers, helbrutes, terminators with the XX legion. Raptors are fun if you don't expect much from them.

In regards to cultists, I tend to go 3x squads of 10. If you bring 30 they become a tempting target for buffs. Better to just get more squads of fewer, since the AL pseudo-character strat just requires allied models between you and the enemy. With Iron Warriors I would do a big blob of 5++/5+++ cultists.

Have you had the chance to try the buffs to DttFE? Seems like a big buff to possessed.
