Hi
So you managed to get lost in this section of the forum?, and you found me?...
Well too bad for you, now you have to witness my tabletop quality painting images!
(or just leave and look at some of the works of other quality painters )

This is me showcasing whatever i am currently working on that catches my interest, either wip or finished.
I am not a good painter, nor a good photograph. I have a small desktop lamp and use my old iphone se camera, and take the pictures on a cutting math, so the pictures are what they are.

My painting style is simple: the best result with the least amount of effort!, aka tabletop quality, cus afterall, any level of painting is better then no painting, right??

I realyrealy like washes of ANY kind, drybrushing is allso a very good friend, but one that i have just gotten the basics of. What realy drags me down is old age, my hands has started to shake so straight lines are becoming an issue and neck/back dont like it when i push past 15min of painting.
I allso have periodes of months where i dont toutch the brush at all, cus i do this to get a break from the screens, nothing else. Having 4 different personality disorders(Asperger beeing the primary), human interactions and generaly RL functionality is bad, so these things never see an actual tabletop, just my shelf, so i am never in a need to "get things done"

Sadly i live in a place where this hobby is a rare one, so the only real selection is GW products. But that dont prevent me from looking outwards, it is just alot more expensive.
While moust GW products in the forum has a hobby section, other games from other companys do not, so that is basicly what i will showcase in this thread.

I will begin with what i am currently doing, painting a starter box from the game Wild West Exodus, spesificly the Warrior Nation and the tribal retribution posse.
I bought that box about 2 years ago but was to scared to paint them. why? cuz i dont know how to paint skin tone, nor do i have the patience for it! However GW solved that issue for me last year with contrast paint!
So now that i had no reasons not to paint them, i started on the part of the box i could buy again if i fubar it, aka the Kaga Brothers. The rest of the box are not avalible to be sold seperatly.(dont ask me why)
They became my testbed and the end result is more then good enugh for me to the point where i will take the methods to the resin models.

Here they are

The dude on the far right was the first, i did not even see where hes lower body clothing stopped, aka below the knee, so a little mishap there. The skin tone on him is allso just a shade wash, the skin tone one the other two are contrast paint.
infact about 90% of the other two brothers are just contrast paint, so as you can see, for tabletop quality, contrast paint are not a bad product. A pit pricy, yes but when you only paint a handfull of models, a single bottle last a very long time.

next up, Walks Looking. (posse leader) Very dynamic sculpt, but hard to take pic of.
pant+boots is done with GW contrast paints, skin is just shade wash and the rest is normal paint. basecoat, shade, 1 highlight.

Thank you.

Yea, i am starting to get controll over the contrast, took the kaga brothers to learn what to do and what not to do. Basicly never over use it, else it will pool. I used 2 layers.

The flesh shade was follows simmilar prinsipals but its not as strong in the pigment and not as fast in the setting fase, meaning you can manipulate it better.
i used 3 layers for the flesh shadewash.

No highlight layers on the flesh at all, and it looks realy great at an arm lenghts distance.

Time for the brawler of this posse; White Buffalo.

I struggled with the skin and pants contrast here, 1st layer did not create enugh shading and 2nd layer sadly just smeard it out a bit, even tough 1st layer was completely dry.
There is deffo a finer skillset required to learn to apply the contrasts to a way that it looks good. Apart from the weapons and the headmask, everything is contrast.
Still, looks very good on an arm lenghts distance.

From the brawler to the other end of the scale; the sharpshooter Ravenseye.

Back to about 50/50 contrast/normal paint here, more cus she is a bit boring model so had to try a little bit of normal edge highlighting. Skin tone is back to GW shadewash, as it is not as dark as the skin contrast i use. Too dark skin would make it hard to see it i think when you consider that her clothing was going to be more or less only darker tones of brown.
Allso her leg pose is wider then the base, so i had to add a rock to the edge of the base to give the model a footmark.

Allso, the odd sharp line here and there is the resin cast. Kaga brothers are plastic, the rest of the posse is resin. While 32mm is bigger then 28mm and a bit easier to work on, i dont want to venture into the world of greenstuff filling, cus i moust likely would make it worse.

Finaly there is LittleClaw.

So back to more or less full contrast mode here. I managed to get a good 1st layer on the skin so my 2nd and 3rd layer was basicly just tinting the colour darker.
Two issues presented themselfs with this model.

nr1: the miniature`s contact point to the base was realy, realy small, no more then 2-3mm, so i am pretty shure i could not have generated enugh glue surface on the sand i use on the base, but i did not want the feet directly on the base as the sand would creep up over the feet, so i desided to grab a small piece of slate to glue the model on. However that too was not enugh so in the end i had to pin it with a 3mm stud to the slate.

nr2: i realised the base issue AFTER i had painted the mini. Now, i do spray all the minis here with a satin varninsh but even with that, the paint rubbed off the feet and legs as i hold the model while using a hand drill on the feet. Apparently the contrast are a super thin layer(kinda makes sence dont it, since it basicly is a wash), so i had to give them all a thicker layer of varnish.
I took all the models and gave them a realy solid layer of gloss varnish before a superlight layer of satin varnish again, just to remove the gloss shine. so if it seems it is a little more glossy then normal, then thats just the varnish prossess i now use.

So, now that this posse is done, whats next?
I hope more warrior nation, but tbh, i dont know how long the drive i have now will last. It might last me thru the remaining models i have, or i might get totaly burned out and need to paint something completely different. (the boss i am workong on now is pushing me, mainly due to fact that im not using contrast paint on it )

...or i might just need a holliday break from the painting.

Thank you, got 5 more Hands(troops) to train my skin tone on.

Here is Raging Bear, a legendary boss in hes spiritual bear shape. Some bosses for Warrior Nation comes in either human shape or spiritual shape, RB only comes in spiritual shape.
First model i do for WN that dont use contrast paint. basecoat of brown, then layers of drybryshing and shadewashes.

Fist Big hurdle completed, aka a unit of Hands, spesificly Plains Stalkers. Back to allmoust only contrast paint again.
I have never liked troop painting, gets too boring, but i think in this case, the induvidual design of all 5 helped me. Atleast the other 5 models dont look impossible to me now.

As mentioned, hands is what they call troops in that game. In terms of rules they are 3-15 models per unit, but the box only gives you 5 or 10. I say "or" cuz the box has 10 models but they are from two different Hands units. They are plastic, monopose so no swapping around, meaning if you want more then 5 minis in the unit, you will have 3x5 copys. I cant speak for the other faction but WN has 4 different hands units, each different for different jobs. These dudes are long range shooting, something that WN dont exactly have too mutch of. (WN`s play style are based around cqc hit and run)

One of them is realy scetchy on the base contact point, so i have to redo that at some point in the future. Allso discovered that satin varnish dont like it when the outside temp drops below 0*c, so i have to wait some weeks before varnishing them.

Every force that exists out there seems to have a big eye catching model, and WWX is no exeption. For the warrior nation it is the Great Elk!

(tryed to get a shot from the other side but the way the model is sculpted it just looks plain bad from the right side)

Like Raging Bear, this is just drybrushing and shadewashes. It does the job and i liked the result. With sutch a big base i tryed to give it a bit more attension. ( i will prolly end up giving my other models some grass on the base too)

The model itself had large gaps around the spikes plus as pike that was supposed to be on the forehead was missing, so a fair amount of gap filling with gs had to be done, but i kinda suspected that from a big resin model.
Fixing it to the base was allso a little extra work. Due to the weight of the model and the stance, it had to be pinned but one pin would not be enugh, so with a little bit of discussion, a solution presented itself. Take a rod, bend it to a V, bend the legs of the V 90* up, drill two holes in the base and glue the V shaped rod to the underside of the base with the rod legs coming up thru the holes, so 1 pin in each back leg.
It is solid as a rock!

So i have allso bought the latest premade possey for WN; Hour of the Wolf, so that is what i will be working on next in regards to WWX.

The range, regardless of what faction you want to collect is mainly resin so keep that in mind if you do start to collect them. There is some mould lines on them but i have not seen any airbubbles or miscasts yet and the parts fit is quite good.
None of the kits comes with assembly guide but that exists on their web site, in the unit card section.

They are allso very, very slowly expanding the universe with lost world exodus by bringing the dystopian era big factions into the fray. Some variations in the rules but both systems can be played together, (kinda like the situation with warmachine and hordes from privater press) and various factions can even ally with WWX factions.

Wehey, long time no see.

Yup, got burned out of WWE, dont worry for thouse who want to see them, the lust will return to me at some point again, thats how my brain works.

So what catches my inntrest now? Star Wars Legion. Their models are not bad, and they are plastics, so a bit easier to work on. four factions in that game devided by two main eras and i went for one in each: CIS (roger, roger drones) and Empire (big bad wolf)
I found a realy easie and super fast way for the basic Drones, kinda good cus it is a horde based force, if you remove drying time it prolly took me about 2H to do 9 models.
Yes it is contrast, it will be the primary way i do it for mutch of what you see in here, it is just superquick and presents a result that is more then good enugh for the table.
If you are looking for a pause from GW 40k, Legion could be something for you. It sits inbetween shirmish game and and army game, it just a bit token heavy, so you have been warned.

I bought only one CIS box so far, Empire has my primary fokus right now, but here are my test B1 Droids:

Now onto Empire.
The big hurdle for any casual painter is white or yellow, and guess what, stormtroopers are white . Ofc there are variations of the stormtroopers in the lore, but they require modeling options that dont exist, so white is what you have to do. (unless you are a skilled model maker, i am not!)
Well i found a way that dont require me to hairbrush paint white or grey at all!

Rattlecans and pinwash to the rescue!

So what did i use? White rattlecan spray, and Tamiya grey and black panel liner. (and normal black hairbrush paint on the guns)
Not too shabby for not loading a single pigment of white or grey on a hairbrush, now is it

I think i need one or two more stormtrooper units, so that is what i am currently workin on right now.

Well, that SW buzz did not last many weeks, im simply not cut-out for copy-paste painting..... I`ll never do an army force it seems........But that just leaves more time to get back on the WWE track, and i got the inspiration back (for now atleast)

I realy enjoyed laying my contrast hands on this dynamic as F sculpt,,, but it is allso a PAIN to take photos of!. I could NOT find the "hero angle" so i just took a bunsh of them and hope you can find atleast one that you find pleasing.

So here is the first model from the Hour of the Wolf Posse set: Moonswift

And now, some shapeshifters!

Weylyn Spirit Walkers

Spoiler:

These two are actualy nothing but a big experiment on my side, the skin is a layer of basecoat, plus oil shadewash.
I have tryed oil shadewash before, but on 8mm airplanes, i had no idea how it would look on 32mm humaniods. Not going to lie, it did not look good on first attempt and i had to wipe off alot with a tissue, but i guess that is the good thing about oil, you have days to fix the looks.

Allso i had no effing idea what to do with the swords, i guess the end result was just me doing something i had never done before. If you give it a few days, they will grow on you.

I`ll see when i get around to continue on WWE, dont know how mutch diversion some new minis from other games coming in over the next month will be to me.

Yea, i have not seen anything like it either.

In the lore, the blades are "spirit weapons", basicly energy. I used a few days on google, but the flavor now for magical blades seems to be that 40k power weapon wave style or object source glow, and i dont realy like either of thouse styles.
I was hoping that the blue edges combined with a black center would hopefully give an impression of the spirit energy flowing on the blade edge around an "empty core".

Maybe one day some good painters finds this idea and can make it properly work.

Yo.

Tried something new yesterday, zenithial highlight.
Got on a small crave for Dust1947 so doing a few axis models. Thing about dust is the models comes pre assembled and primed from the company, so it is just jumping on the painting.

On the left is how they are right from the box, in the middle my first attempt at zenith using a RATTLECAN, and on the right a layer of nuln oil over the zenith.

It is not a bad effect, but it is so far from my regular style that i need time to prosess this look. If anything, this medium sized axis force will be a good training for the tecnique

Ellu

Got some Dusties done, 3 units. Got two more units to be done but one one is a duplicate of the first image, so no more Dust to show off for some time, they like many other suffers from restock issues and what i want, they dont have yet for this force.

Beside that i am now doing some SW legion but they too suffer hard from non existing stock and it is as slowgoing as my Dust is. I found 3 generals( my first 3) for the galactic empire so i will work on thouse.
I allso found a deal on a starter box for monsterpocalypse, so 6 Guard minis to paint up there, i will do a group shot of them when they are done as it is 5 tiny minis and 1 huge.

Experiment time!!

Been doing a fair amount of SW legion over the past 3 weeks, but only cus i never found out how to paint the monsterpocalypse defender starter box. I even had to get a hold of some paint stripper from greenstuff world (amasing stuff) cus i hated my two attempts on the monster.
So today as i was stripping the model, my mind drifted towards an experiment i did during the winter with oilpaint. I dont know if the style even has a name, but it is a variation of shadewash but whitout diluting the oil paint. I paint the section i want completely in the oil colour, and then use q-tips, paper towels or an old shirt to wipe off as mutch of the oilpaint as i want to. End result is the same as any painting style, exept i never used a hairbrush, nor did i dilute the oilpaint.

If this style has a name, let me know.

And the result:

Pretty nice result if i would say so myself. This is cheap black oilpaint straight on the factory grey resin. No primer, no basecoat. (ofc the resin was washed first)
Going to let it dry for some days, then varnish it and see what i can do with some trim colour.

Thank you, placing model on the backlog, found a monpock faction that i genuinly want to paint, so thouse are arriving soon.

Heatwave in norway now (like mutch of the western world apparently), but for us, heatwave is 3 days in a row with temps above 27*c. norm july temp is 18-23*c in the region i live in, so it is completely draining all will and energy to paint.

BUT, i did get something done before this heat started: Battlefleet Gothic.
Now, these are proxy models from scourgescenics.co.uk as non forgeworld tau ships are basicly impossible to accuire these days, and if you do find them, they are stupidly overpriced, due to their rarity.

Painted up enugh for a cruiser clash, so two cruisers and two escorts.

lots of shadewashing and glazing going on to get that blue tone over silver and the red is plain red permanent marker pen (im soooo lazy)

wheeeee, happy break time. Felt good not painting something for a while.

Felt like painting some green as i have not done that is over a year, so first up is a monsterpocalypse monster from the Zerkalo block, i realy liked to paint this one. Second up is a groupshot of a squad for Dust1947 IJN faction from their starterbox.
idk why i wanted to paint dark green ninjas, prolly cus i honestly have not found anyone doing it yet and i tought it would stand out a bit from all the black, dark blue and dark brown ninjas i have seen.

Thank you.
Yea the WWX range has some realy dynamic sculpts so painting them is quite fun.

The range is 32mm so it cant realy be compared to GW that uses 28mm, but in my very limited older 40k collection i have a 7th edition necron warrior, if you straighten him out and gave him a narrower leg stance, he is basicly identical in hight and limb bulk as the kaga brother with a crossbow in my first post, however the same brother is a skinny tiny man compared to a custodes.

Kaga is allso about 95% match to a stormtrooper in SW Legion, take away the troopers armor and you have the same body bulk.
