Hi all,

Recently came into the possession of more Tyranids after taking a break from them for years and the army I currently have is painted by me from age 12-14. I have a bit of an attachment to my old scheme and I was wondering whether anyone has ever updated an old paint scheme now that you're a bit older or have gained some new techniques?

I'll attach some images of my Hive Fleet and just looking at it, it could be cleaned up as a Leviathan army but I was hoping for something a bit more unique, so opinions please! The scheme was very easy, with just basecoats covered in a wash and the odd detail picked out and was hoping for a bit more than that this time.

I have been looking at Catgut's painting tutorials for fast schemes too so would be open to something like that as well. Basically it boils down to how fast I can paint the grunts (ahem, gaunts) without losing my mind.

Cheers!

They both look good.

Contrast paints are a godsend for getting hordes table ready in no time flat. I’d suggest looking into schemes that could be done “basic” for the little guys, but that you could also ramp up to more detailed for the centerpiece models. On GW’s paint app, they list how they get the results with both normal and contrast, might be worth looking into.

Oh Canada!

Your old schemes look just fine; I'd use them as a base and get the new recruits (hatches?) up to that level, then go back and spend time prettifying any models / units you find particularly fun to work on.

I'm in a somewhat similar process myself right now, adding some models to a unit from 2003 and trying to decide between touching up the vets to my current level or just having a mixed unit with some that look better than others.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll be looking into contrast as an option, some of them are hit and miss and I'll have to think around that if my scheme uses any of the problem colours.

The issue with this army is that I washed everything in Badab Black, which was a great wash and Nuln oil isn't, so I'll be looking outside the citadel range for a good dark tone.

Oh Canada!

Army Painter Dark Tone is the closest equivalent to old Badab Black on the market. And grab some Strong Tone while you're at it, if you miss Devlan Mud.
