Most STL creations seen here now available on these store pages:

edit 07/29/2023
Having a summer sale on most items until August 14th, ~25% off. Next storewide sale not until December.

edit 08/07/2023, taking a pause from patreon, feeling little burn out, stuff will now just be sold through the stores directly.

Since I'm stuck inside for a while longer, might as well catch up on some sculpting and world building. No printer yet, aiming to at least get a FDM by summer.

Have a bunch of model projects in mind, mainly around vehicles, mecha and various armored-subjects but have some critter 'cepts kicking around as well. Going forward I'll make some finished things available on cult3d.

To start off, that recent sisters dreadknight-thing reveal reminded me of something similar I've wanted to make.
I had had a previous workup but seems the backup file was corrupted or improperly saved. Only the legs loaded, and those weren't the best of details. Oh, well. Gives me a chance to practice more zbrush.

Some of the old sketch ideas I'm working from

I can see that, thanks Ketara.

Ugh, didn't think I'd be away from this log for so long. Been slammed with projects that are finally wrapping up.
While I haven't had time to model that mechsuit further, I have been making roads in other sculpting exercises and have a bunch of possible projects I might try taking to patreon. More on that soon.
For now though finally had some time to just sketch and did some organic modelling practice with a chaos fan sculpt this afternoon. Not really meant for printing as is.

I'd probably do the wing-ears differently next time, definitely keep it in separate parts than try to boolean everything.

This isn't bad artistically speaking but it's a little rough around the edges, if you're using Zbrush I'd try to get familiar with the Pinch Tool, Flatten, and Hard Polish. You can also layout new topology over top with zmoddler.

I teach people how to sculpt if they're interested in speeding up your progressions. For example, do you know how to correctly set the Perspective feature in ZBrush so that you're sculpting looks close to what it would actually look like rather than being distorted, I'm not talking about clicking the perspective button you actually need to change the settings of it underdraw.

Some of the details here would be better if they were made into separate subtools. You would also benefit from learning how to use the zbrush deformation tools like polish, and z remesher, along with decimation master to lower the overall polycount.

You can see a bit on the wings where your mesh is starting to distort. The Helmet section and teeth, eyes would benefit from being their own subtools, separate from the wings. I would also suggest a much deeper panel lining of the insets if you're intent is too 3D print this guy for miniatures.

I recommend the Chizzle brush.

Keep up the good work but I would take time time to add more bulk to the raised surfaces and scoop out some of the inset surfaces, some Sharper less organic panel lining would go a long way here as well. Overall great concept and an interesting night lord take on the World Eater bitz from forgeworld. A none winged variation would be cool. What I really like about this is the teeth if a bit small, and brow section and eyes. Little small overall but it's just cool.

Send me a PM if you're intersested in one on one lessons. I really like the face and a-sysmetry. This would work better as a start of a bust then a miniature in it's current state.

Thanks B&R, I'll take your offer into consideration.
This was more a mindflex, I've been deep in 2D commissions the last few months and just needed to play with clay for a few hours
I really have no intent for this particular sculpt to ever be printed, but I kept the notion of 'could-be' in the back of my mind as I worked.
I normally keep subtools separate in serious sculpts, like the mechsuit is 30+ pieces, half of them are hidden iterations, and a current demon sculpt I'm working on will remain in separate Subts.
I completely forgot about those FW heads, this is based on some fan art which was a redraw of of an even older piece from my first forays into digital art I posted on warseer back in the day.

I didn't start with the head bust because the majority of the shape is an astartes helmet, so I used a template I measured from a model some time ago for proxy part sculpts; if I started from scratch I'd likely just do a trace sculpt with ortho photo references.

Some of the details here would be better if they were made into separate subtools. You would also benefit from learning how to use the zbrush deformation tools like polish, and z remesher, along with decimation master to lower the overall polycount.

They were and I did. The original sculpt was something like 16 subtools.

I cut the helmet in half, sculpted most of the face with the clay buildup, dam standard, h polish and trim smooth border brushes. The side teeth were partially sculpted into the face, but the front teeth and eyes were their own subts until late in process. As you can see the initial teeth were way too small for 28mm scale, inq54 though...

The batwings were done using two different methods. The one on our left started off as a plane that was cut up into polygroups and qmeshed. The "bones" were cylinders inflated at each end and soft deformed, and then booleaned and "polish crisp edge" deformation.
The one on the right started as a svg shape I made, extruded, creased, zremeshed with adapt, then sculpted the "bones" in, before decimating.
I think at it's peak the whole booleaned head was 870k poly, but after decimation master I got it down to 138k. Had I kept subts separate, it'd probably be half that.
I'll eventually get around to learning manual retopo, which will prob reduce poly on some of the hardsurface stuff going forward.
Thanks for the heads up on the chisel brush, I'm still working my way through the brush libraries day by day.
I'm not too worried about the mesh distorting, keep in mind if this were printed at tabletop scale it'd be maybe ~15mm tall, I tried to keep the features and layers no smaller than .4mm, granted the pockmarks and lower teeth are pushing it. But I agree I'd have to exaggerate creases and insets a bit more. Another iteration I considered, the bat wings slightly concave/vex with the Sbend deformer, but I'd have to thicken them first, as they might tear off with support removal.

Yeah, definitely. I have 20 years of model ideas I can finally get around to and I don't have to wait for the greenstuff to cure
This is will probably become something of a kitchen sink log, once I get the swing of the tools, and actually get some printers.
So far my todo list is in no particular order:
"Host of the Steel Contagion" monsters and body horror chaos stand-ins.
"People from a far Millennium" worldbuilding within a grimdark setting that isn't just copycat of existing product lines, models/bits themed on cultures outside medieval Europe/ww1; but also civilian mobs, vehicles, terrain, near future/tau auxiliary stand-ins, admechs, women in practical armor, etc.
Plenty of alternative 40k stuff planned, but also Sciror/TFM concepts I didn't have the time to flush out prior to Ed closing up shop. *cough AFG
A redo of some of the old VOR into the Maelstrom model line, personal project starting from fresh designs so no IP violation, which I think I talked about briefly on TFM boards last time I there.

And probably some LancerRPG, because mecha are finally having a Renaissance.
I'm considering the patreon route for some of this, but I need to figure out my pace and quality control first.

Vanguard Miniatures has been keeping me distracted for a while yeah. I've started working on a more indie / non-proxy project as well, but it's going slower than expected. :(

I'm very intrigued by your upcoming projects. People from a Far Millennium seems really interesting. I've been wanting to do more grimdark civilian stuff for a while now, but then in 6mm scale.

I hear that, I put sculpting off for too to rebuild my nestegg, I definitely hit a funk with the 2d work I was doing for long term clients. Gotta find that work/play balance, which is a little tricky when they overlap. If you have the time I say go for it with the civilian stuff.

I still wanna get into 2d stuff as well, or get better at 3d. I notice that I'm using a tool which isn't that effective, and might at a certain point no longer be supported. For for the longer term I'm probably gonna have to learn new software.

The work/play balance is indeed very tricky, I have the same with Vanguard Miniatures sometimes, especially when they're stuck in 'full proxy mode' whilst I want to develop some other concept as well. But yeah, that's how these things go I guess.

Been absent but not unproductive.
As stated earlier I have loftier projects in mind, but gotta crawl before you can walk.
Spent recent months becoming reacquainted to sculpting 28mm figure scales and all the quirks of zbrush; the proportions look so much larger on screen than with greenstuff, some features look huge but are in fact only 1-2mm when scaled to print.

I'll be launching a patreon in early July related to the stuff I post here and on subreddits. I'll add the link in the first post when it's live.

Rather than 40k, for the first month I'm working on some stargrave space-privateer themed crew members, to fill in as heavy and/or combat armor roles. Some can also be used for pirate trooper mission NPCs.
Right now I'm trying to square away the last bits of kit still needed, mainly weapon designs, arms and missing armor sections; before moving into posing the various character types and filling in the gaps. Due to the smaller game scale they'll be monoposed, but the actual poses won't be as stiff or disjointed as this WIP.
I also have some beasts/robots, loot and alien crew (that are not just animal heads on human bodies) that are mostly modeled but still need polished, but it depends on what all I can get done in the next week with this fellow.

Still working on the privateers, but nearly done with a medic option for stargrave.
Who doesn't want their crew to get patched up by a giant alien spider doctor who spins their own bandages?

Thanks everyone!
And patreon is live.
I would have liked to get it launched earlier in the summer but my schedule was thrown out of whack by unseasonably intense storms & rolling power outages (yaaay). I didn't get everything I wanted done for the first month, buuut I'm keeping the rest of 2021's patreon updates available until January '22.
The finished alien spider medic is available in the welcome pack for those who join.
*EDIT: Space pirates seen below are available now.

I'm sticking to Stargrave stuff for the next few updates, mainly Beasts & Bots for October.

Robot crew WIP. Given the scrounging theme of Stargrave, I'd figure space pirates would be frugal with their robot resources. So its arms and legs use parts modified from the extra limbs found on their combat armor, and the feet were unused prosthetic parts from a scrapped sculpt. Other than weapon swaps and a few missing joints it's ready for posing. They probably won't be released with the above (because weather), but should be later in the month as a second drop or with all the rest of the stuff slated for October.

Following that I still very much intended to explore “People from a far Millennium” projects, quite a few can be worked into either 40k or model agnostic games. The last few months have had good practice in letting me know my current pace of output/limitations and becoming accustomed to the software used. I'm currently modeling based on heroic scales, though I'm not sure I'll stick to it wholly going forwards, as I have a tendency to make the bodies longer than older models, and taller models allow for just a bit more detailing.

Robot soldiers are delayed, had some issue with the leg meshes being corrupted when I was posing them. Thankfully zbrush has this autosave function that takes a snapshot of WIPs, so if files get messed up you have a partial backup. Cool feature. But not ready for this month.
In the meantime I have some more beasts for Stargarve coming up on patreon this week: Bile Worms and repair/Sentrabot proxies.
Also for those interested in the Spider Medic and space pirates who don't do patreon, those are now available on my cults3d page, link in the first post.

Between all the shipping delays, the impending holidays, and it being winter I'm holding off on buying a printer until next year. At least resin wise, as the only place I can set one of those up is my unheated garage or basement with no ventilation. I have a place I can set up an FDM and can create an enclosure for it down the line, but again no rush to compete with the madness of holiday freight.
Though I found some pay-to-print shops in my area I can commission to get some of my pieces made; but similar to shipping I'm holding off until after the holidays to queue an order.
In the meantime been busy working on some terrain pieces for this months Patreon release, assorted crates and plasma-tower looking things, and this lumbering cargo shuttle, the Magtaas. I'm sure someone more fluent can tell me if online translatators are accurate, but it's Filipino for "hoist" rather than go with the standard Western-based naming conventions in scifi. It's designed for FDM printing, most of the parts are self-supporting or should require minimal material. It has a bunch of magnet slots so the side thrusters can swivel and the front doors can open. The hold can actually fit one of the cargopods. And the cargopod is a terrain piece in itself, that can fit at least 8 models. I have a few more upgrades to make for these, but wanted to get the current models published.

Spoiler:

As stated in the OP, from now until January 8th, '22 all previous releases on patreon will be available along with this month before I move onto the standard by-the-month-availability method most people use. Also next year I'm moving on to 40k proxies, which will probably be of more interest to people.
The stargrave stuff has been enjoyable practice, I have a few more things I'll explore for it of the bug variety at some point next year.
Overall I have a better idea on how to pace original content projects.
That Magtaas was a mental workout on how to tackle future projects of larger models and/or moving parts. I def need to look into a license for OpenLOCK system.
It'll be a lot easier when I can prototype at home like the rest of ya gitz.

Switching gears in the New Year. Making some NPCs and scenic pieces for 40k, necromunda, stargrave etc.
These are half of first batch of People from a Far Millennium.

Still a chance to grab current stargrave-related content for the lowest offer. Most of it is going to stores in Jan, though the Magtaas Cargo Barge and Spider Medic will still be in the welcome pack.

Thanks! yes, next few months are civilian related sculpts. Trying to go for Dickens Village style collections but 40k.

 Malika2 wrote:

Thanks! Realistically, for now I can release 3-10 models a month, but I'm actively working on more than that at any given time.
At least the next few months are civilian NPCs or militia/cultist fodder.

January is slated to be
- Bagman
- the 2 Scamps
- Ushering Preceptor
- woman clutching small child
- 1-2 Servitups

February: Public bathroom scatter terrain and some more adults running about. Maybe a street corner preacher/doomsayer.

March & onward: I have other Scamps in the works, some more adult bodies in different occupations (firefighters, market people, construction, bartenders, etc) Not everyone will be running some will just trying to do their jobs, etc.
A bunch servitups, a variety of vehicles(civilian and military), props & scatter terrain, some stand alone buildings.
Probably some mutants/demons around Halloween '22.
And gradually working on IG and SoB stuff thrown in piecemeal.

I have at least partial files of all of these, so I can throw a batch together quickly if I have to.
If I didn't do presupports or care about STL integrity I could do a full model a day, but merging all the the parts and ensuring the meshes are solid (and to avoid uncured resin bubbles spots) adds time to the process. The Bagman had all kinds of gaps I had to fill in before exporting, and then I managed to reduce the final file size from 47mb down to 22.

First of Feb'22 release now up, the running civilians are still available available until 02-09-22.
Have some bleak public bathroom bits along with some non-gothic wall sections.
The wall sections are v1, already have more modular versions planned. more part options, multistory and magnets, less supports needed (at least for FDM) not sure when they'll be ready.

Still need to make some damaged ones using the v1 parts

One thing I'm trying to do is create more assets for tabletops settings to feel like they're actual 'lived in' spaces.
Fantasy have plenty of these bits, scifi artists are still catching up. I haven't seen much in the way of grimdark bathrooms...
Maybe more opulent domiciles have personal lavatories but much like dormitories, monasteries and cramped public housing I made for some shared bathrooms:
sinks, urinals, thermal tubs (bath house or gym settings) and Auger thrones - a sort of waterless toilet that flushes like trash compactors and can be stacked next to each like ye olde latrines. No stall doors though, stalls are for hiding, and you know who has something to hide? Heretics.

Thanks! I forgot to update them here, I added some sitting skeletons that fit on the thrones and in the tubs as well.

March'22 content is now available, warrior worker gangs. Angry farmers, factory or construction workers (possible cultist fodder).
Set contains: 6 body poses, 12 heads, 4x nailpistols & ccw arms.

Arms for ranged weapons like rifles/shotguns and other dakka options will be available later this month.
The previous Bleak Bathroom & wall set are still available via patreon until Saturday Mar 12.
