The first ones finished for this project are a squad of horse headed troopers. They'll be used as regular Chaos Space Marines. These pics came out a bit crap 'cause I'm not that good of a photographer, and love to use way too much gloss varnish.

I'll try to get painting the actually big dudes today.

There's also a WIP thread for this project on Dakka.

That's nice to hear, Icelord!

Here's a Demon Prince I just finished.

Another Chaotic Overlords Helbrute Golem ready to rampage!

I just love painting the skins on these guys. Lots of thin highlight layers, glazes and recess washes. I even spattered some tiny driplets on this one, to create kinds of liver spots and pimples.

A few more pics from different angles at my blog as usual.

Just finished up a squad of Centaur Bikers. Really like how these fellows turned out.

Great work here. It all has that grimdark grime and those old, rogue trader proportions. I'm also loving the lacquered red.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Thanks Mr Nobody! I'm very glad you like these.
Those sweet Rogue Trader proportions... aahhh...

Here's another finished Demon Prince character. Again very happy how the model turned out in the end. It's done very similarly as all the other big guys, with the exception of more yellow transfers being used (they're Blood Angels & Thousand Sons ones), and the skin tone being slightly different from the others. Greenish pimples and maculas on the edges of the face being a personal favourite of mine. It felt a bit weird to leave all the claws in the wings just pure black (with gloss varnish on top), but I think they work very well. Just itching to get gaming with these guys some day! A few more pics at my blog.

Another great prince, love watching the paint pull your sculpting and weird mash of bits together. Also the hodgepodge of yellow transfers strangely works for that occult flair, when I would have expected it to be a confusing mash of references.

Thank you Boss Salvage & Kestral for the feedback and very kind words. They made my morning very happy!

One more unit (Obliterators this time) painted ready! I'm loving the end result, even though I had a little difficult times painting these. I was doubting whether their faces (or even most of the "fleshy" parts) should be done in teal tones, like all the bigger guys faces I did earlier. Or should I try to smoothly blend all the reds into the metal tones of their guns and gear. But I felt I hadn't taken these things in consideration when building and sculpting the unit up, so didn't have much guidance from that side. Just couldn't decide where to start and aim for. So I routinely went with the red face and skin tones, and roughly followed the formula I had chosen for this army project.

When it was time to add transfers, everything kind of came together very well. I just loaded all the gun parts with red runes and hand marks from the Night Lords transfer sheet. The fleshy sides of the monstrosities were filled with black and white runes and writings from Word Bearers, Skitarii and Necromunda Enforcers (at least) transfer sheets. I also painted some tiny wriggly markings with white to better bring together some of the different transfer types, and shape them to match the curvy lines of the models more. I also did lots of dirtying and staining of the details and metals, mostly with Seraphim Sepia and Athonian Camoshade. So even though the basic paint job on these guys is extremely simple, the myriad of different transfers really help to blend and bring everything together and provide lots of detail. Lovely miniatures!

Here's the full gang of Cultists ready to rumble. Got the Leader with vertical eyelids, a Plasma Gun and an Axe. The four Gangers are armed with a variety of basic weapons. Careless hivers might think that one of them carries a sleeping bag, but on closer inspection it'll turn out to be just an enormous scroll of forbidden curses. There's two Heavies with a Flamer and a Heavy Bolter. Three Juves are equipped for close combat. Every gang should have a Juve with two knives, and I finally made a proper conversion to underline that. One of the Juves has a flail for an arm, and the last poor kid's got a hook and a Chainsword type of attachment instead of hands. Dangerous in melee, difficult in toilet. Each member of the gang also has a holstered pistol. As the load-out is quite heavy, I'll have to start the gang without one of the Heavies, or just leave all the pistols out until the gang gets enough credits for them. Can't wait to get gaming. But when?

You have such a RT era ethos going on here that it just is awesome.

Nothing like the old RT, pre-RT01 era of sculpts which were just mad.

Thank you for the very nice comments everyone!

Funny that you mentioned the Spirited Away, Murenius! I sure have seen it a few times (along with Totoro, Ponyo & others). There are many characters in those movies that must have inspired me before I started this project, especially Stink Spirit, No-Face, Yubaba, Kamaji and the like. Not to forget the Cat Bus and the Howls Moving Castle! Just great characters and images. I was even thinking about building a trio of Chaos Spawn in the vein of the Three Heads. But for some reason, I just kind of forgot about that in the midst of this project, along with other Studio Ghibli related influences. Sure they must have existed sub-consciously all the time, but were not super intentional.

Honourable mention here must go to SpongeBob SquarePants (and many other cartoons that utilize similiar things) with all the bulging eyes, stretching tongues, jaws gaping so wide from awe that whales could swim in... Just loving those kinds of exaggerated things. Cool mutation ideas for miniatures.
