Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for tabletop games that can be played on a 3x3. With seemingly no end of covid in sight, I have no clue when I'll be able to game with my buds again, but I managed to get the wife playing X-wing and now I'm curious what else might be out there that we can play at home. I've dabbled in a bunch of different systems over the years (Battlegroup, Bolt Action, and Firestorm Armada to name a few) so literally anything is on the table (heh!).
Thanks boys!

Frostgrave is a great one for 3x3 areas. Definitely worth a look. It’s basically two wizards and their warband fighting for treasure in a frozen city.
Also, by the same author, Rangers of Shadow Deep. The closest a war game gets to an RPG. It’s a great coop game where your party of about 7 plays through a series of linked adventures.your party levels up as you complete each mission and it’s thick with atmosphere

Most fantasy skirmish games that I know play on a 3x3. I only really know one Sci-Fi skirmish game though (Infinity).
My recommendation is Gaslands though.
Cheap and easy to get into. Tons of ridiculous fun.
Plays on pretty much any surface. Put some terrain on your coffee table and have a good time!
Usually played on a 4x4, but mostly because they're handy.

Mantic's Deadzone (SciFi) is played on 2x2 up to 4x4 for large games
Kings of War Vanguard for Fantasy can be played on 3x3
yet in general, good games for playing at home with the family (small boards and easy out of the box expirience):
Dreadball
Warhammer Underworlds
Walking Dead All out War

If you want to section off a portion of the mat then Warcry is played on 22x30. It's also pretty accessible rules-wise.

Zona Alfa (tabletop version of the STALKER computer games).
Last Days (more zombie fun).
Buy your armies in 10mm, convert distances to centimetres and any of the "big" GW games become playable on a 3x2 ft board. Search for "minihammer" online - a 10mm army costs about £30, and the scenery at that scale is super-fast to make.

Honestly, if it is a skirmish game then it is probably for 3x3 surfaces.

While technically dead, Guild Ball uses 3x3, albeit with a few specific markings needed. All the rules are still available online for free (alongside paper dolls to use as proxies for models) and the community is determined to keep the game going via the Guild Ball Community Project.

Marvel Crisis Protocol is a 3x3 and just a fantastic game full stop. Malifaux would be my second choice.
Spinning off X-Wing though, its worth mentioning that Legion has a 3x3 skirmish ruleset that might be worth checking out. Another Sci-fi option would be the new Warcaster: Neo Mechanica from Privateer Press. I haven't gotten to play it, but my friends who have all seem to really like it.
The other thing I'd suggest is some of the board game hybrids. Warhammer: Underworlds is quick and fun, even if it turns into a bit too much of a card game for me. Aristeia!, Monsterpocalypse and Godtear are all solid systems that play on a relatively small space.

Let me ask you this. What do you like in a game?
Do you prefer named models with set character stats, more generic stat lines, or build your own hero systems?
Do you prefer sci-fi, Fantasy, or historical?
Is there a genre you are after such as aerial/space warfare, skirmish, model-vs-model, sports games, etc.?
Is there a type of mechanic you particularly like in one of the games you play now?
Do you want stand alone games or to link several games into a campaign or story line?
This might help us direct you better. There are literally 100's of games that work on a 3x3 table.

I believe Warhammer Age of Sigmar Warcry, Warhammer 40k Kill-team, Necromunda, etc. can all be played on a small board.

Most things from Nordic Weasel, such as the 5 parsecs rules or the five leagues rules, would work well on a 3 by 3 table. I believe the elder scrolls rules are designed for that table size also)

Fallout has been mentioned, but I feel like I also need to mention This Is Not a Test. Such a sweet skirmish game, and is literally an Indie Fallout with nearly everything that is iconic in Fallout, with great rules and a great skirmish system, and came out years before Fallout finally released.
I also play Dracula's America, and Gaslands, and second them as great games.
If you have 40K or Warhammer models, then I always love to recommend stuff from One Page Rules. Not only do they have awesome rules-lite versions of 40k and Age of Sigmar, but they also have skirmish-level versions of each game. Completely different ruleset than Games Workshop, but with unit profiles for essentially all 40k and Sigmar models, as well as several other forces from games like Mantic's Warpath and Kings of War. The skirmish versions work great on 3x3 or 3x4 boards, it's how I play them.
I also have a favorite but not well-known game called Mech Attack, which is an indie mech-combat game that is essentially Battletech-lite. I am using it to play games with the awesome new Catalyst Game Labs models being released for Battletech. I can easily play games with 4-6 mechs on a side on a 3x3 mat.

Check out Guerilla Miniatures Gaming on Youtube. Ash Barker is a big fan of what he calls "kitchen table games"; skirmish games that can be played on 3x3 mats.

Despite it's name implying 1920s-40s, it can be used in any setting. We've done fantasy, space opera, post apoc and even battletech just by statting out the models we had.
Here's the free trial stuff, in case you're interested. You only need the free quickstart plus the starter deck to get a good demo. The other stuff like horror and solo decks are optional add-ons.

Titanomachina can be played in a 3'x3' area. The board is about 20" square, although you can bodge in a Chess board with 50mm squares if you're that way inclined. At this point unless you're playing it in Tabletop Simulator you'd need to be willing to go the print-and-play route - PM me if you'd like to do that.

If you want to stay GW, I'd probably lean towards Blood Bowl.
