Announcing… The 34th iteration of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition.
The theme: “Dangerous Terrain.”

For those who have not taken part before, this is a competition about terrain building (as you may have gathered from the title), but it is not strictly limited to pure terrain; dioramas, game aids that double as terrain, and other variations have been submitted in the past. To get a feel for how these competitions run and what to expect you may wish to look over the previous rounds, linked below.

Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute that must in some way be applied to the your terrain project, to compete with other modelers for that most prestigious of prizes, membership in The League of Extraordinary Riveters [LoER]. The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.

The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, and all are welcome to enter regardless of ability, etc. The League’s aim is to encourage fellow gamers, hobbyists and model-makers to up their game through building terrain for their tabletop, be it for wargames, board games, dioramas, and so forth. Everyone participating is encouraged to use this thread to trade ideas, inspire each other, and give feedback and encouragement. Everyone is a winner in a League competition, because in the end, you have a brand-spankin’-new piece of terrain!

For those returning to the competition, welcome back! For those competing for the first time, welcome!

Round 34: “Dangerous Terrain”

Terrain not just meant to deter you, but hurt you for trying, whether it be tank traps, mine fields, razor wire or something else. As always, anything goes: any game system, any scale, not a game system etc. Be sure to point out anything sneaky / not obvious so that it doesn't get lost in the judging!

Plenty of WIP photos and posts will keep the community engaged, so work steadily and post often. Please start with a photo of your core components and materials. Regular updates will keep the contest visible, WIP pics will generate ideas and opinions, and we can all push our abilities forward and have some fun.

However, FINAL pictures should not be shown here. Post in your own P&M threads, but please not in this one lest we distract anyone in the home stretch or spoil everyone’s big reveal. PM me the pictures and/or links instead when they are ready. Please put as much effort into taking photos of your finished model as you have building it; try to finish in time to make your best effort and ask for support if needed. Poorly lit, out-of-focus, blurred, and low resolution photos can harm your chances in any competition. If you want to add some figures for scale purposes or to display your new piece in situ, do so, as long as it is clear that your entry alone will be judged.

Rules:
1: Talk about the Competition. Post it in your blogs. Add the banner to your signature.
HTML code for the banner.....
{url=https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/796126.page]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

2: Please finish promptly. The deadline is Midnight GMT on Wednesday, May 12th.

3: Your piece should be scratch-built or heavily converted in large part. Model kit parts can be used, preferably in innovative ways. This contest challenges us to think outside the box, and beyond in printed instructions, so push those model bits in new directions. Innovate, improvise, and experiment.

4: Your model should be a piece of terrain (or a diorama or game aid with strong terrain elements). It cannot be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

5: Any scale, any setting and any gaming system are welcome. A nice mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, historical, or modern will make this contest all the more interesting. If you don't play a game, that's fine too; just make a display piece, but keep rule 4 in mind.

6: You can make as small or as large a model as you want. Bear in mind the deadline and don't bite off more than you can chew.

7: Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries and albums, and take the time to take the best photos that you can. Together with your photos, please include a summary of the essential materials and a narrative of the project in brief, if appropriate.

8: AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use LEDs? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this.

9: Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets… or other such meticulous detail. Deliberate, specific, and thoughtful inclusion of well-crafted details are what this contest is all about.

10: THE RULE OF COOL cannot be ignored.

If you are unsure of anything, just ask.

Judging:
Modelling: 50 points total.
(10 points) Design - Is the concept clear and effectively applied to the model? Is the piece both visually appealing and functional? Does the design fit the game, setting, genre, or theme?
(10 points) Originality - Is the concept unique and creative? Does it draw inspiration or pay homage while remaining original?
(10 points) Materials - Are the materials diverse and challenging? Are they thoughtfully chosen and integrated seamlessly?
(10 points) Skill and Techniques - Does the piece feature crisp lines, even textures, and sturdy construction? Are both core techniques and innovative approaches used?
(10 points) Attention to Detail - Do small details in both design and execution give the piece added realism?

Painting: 30 points total.
(10 points) Design - Is the color scheme and paint selection thoughtful and expressive?
(10 points) Skill and Techniques -Does the piece start with solid foundations, color blocking, and shading? Is the paint consistent, crisp, and well-executed?
(10 points ) Visual impact - Does the paint job serve to draw the whole model together and enhance the craftsmanship of the model?

Bonuses: 20 points total.
(10 points) Thematic connection - Does the entry firmly relate to the theme?
(10 points) Ambition: Did the project clearly demonstrate the pursuit of some new skill in assembly, in paint, or in both?

Total: 100 points possible.

Prizes:
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters is the top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognized as a hobbyist par excellence... as well as host the next round.

People's Choice: As voted for by your fellow Dakkanauts. More warm feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love your work.

And… anyone who completes a model for this competition may of course request the details of their score… I’ll try to make it useful for your continued riveting ambitions!

So start gathering bits and get building!

Hm. This sounds like something I could do. I'll have to dig through the bit box and find inspiration.

Excellent! Many thanks to Arakasi for taking the lead on hosting, and to the others who volunteered ideas and offered to help. I'm definitely in as well.

I'm a little torn as to what to do... I'm thinking about a diorama of a unit crossing dangerous terrain. I have an insane amount of 2" pink XPS foam I scavenged from a construction site, so I could go for something pretty big.

I'm in. I have an idea that is diabolically dangerous. I just need to figure out supplies.
Good luck, and happy riveting everyone!

Cool - looks like we have a competition! As host, I can't "enter" per se, but, I *do* need practise finishing a piece of scenery in a 3 month period - so I'll be working on a completely unrelated piece of dangerous terrain in support of all of your fine efforts. I have some excess Forgeworld resin blocks I've been meaning to turn into tank traps - and this seems the perfect opportunity...

Alright, lets get those materials posts going. I'll start...

I don't know what this will turn into, but here's the 2" XPS foam board from a construction site (actually, the school where I teach IS a construction site, so I made my middle school students collect it from where it had blown across the playground and load it into the back of my car). I can easily buy 1" and 1/2" at the building supply store, but I haven't seen 2" available via retail, so this was a sweet find. So sweet, in fact, that I bought myself a new foam cutter! I don't have a clear plan, but with so much of it, I might build a whole cliff and set a diorama into the side of it of models actually travelling across dangerous terrain. It wouldn't be playable tabletop terrain at that point, but I think the diorama aspect of our contest is a little underused and might generate some fresh interest.

That's an awesome haul getting all that XPS, MacPhail I got most of my XPS from finding stuf that blew out of construction sights too, but the amount you got is a thing of beauty

the Proxxon table hotwire cutter is a wonderful tool.. I´ve seen quite some good works with the handheld one done too... never had it for myself... will be nice to see some close up work with this... (I only have a simpler handheld one but I am not satisfied with it... but still if you own one tool already you always argue with yourself to buy the better one and remain with suffering...

Here are the raw materials for my entry:

My wife frequently has to attend conferences, and recieves bento lunches when she does. Usually, bentos come in disposable plastic containers, but for the last three, the disposable plastic containers were further contained in these sweet compressed foam "boxes." They are all 5mm thick and the "walls" are 55mm tall. I'm going to turn them into a two-level abandoned building/haunted mansion, with internal walls and some kind of flooring. It will be quite an ambitious project, and one that I'm not sure I can pull off, but I relish the challenge. Wish me luck!

Josh, that'll be a cool structure... I imagine you're looking at those forms as perimeter walls with the layout contained within? The two-story build is ambitious but very on-theme for a haunted mansion.

Viktor, I've been eyeing the Proxxon hotwire table. There's some other fabricators making laser-cut MDF jigs for it that look really cool too.

I think I'm going to go for my wall-mounted diorama idea... maybe about 10" x 20" in wall-footprint and only about 3" deep, with a winding cliffside trail, some sketchy gaps, crumbling spires, maybe a tunnel if I can pull it off, and a little squad of Battle Sisters on a lonely long-range recon patrol. I've been really inspired by the use of vegetation here and in the monthly painting contest, so If I have time to spare, maybe I'll push myself there a bit with some tufts, leaves, mosses, flowers, and vines.

What's brewing among the other Riveters?

honestly, I´ve been eyeing other tables too... some already come with jigs that have a way to make circles etc... I´ve seen quite a big share of videos now what one can achive with the cutter... and what cool additions you can get on the market... thus I´m still with the proxxon... the name Shiftinglands should be your first address when you look for additional tools... that man really put inventivness to a new level... i have a tool from him that lets make you hexagonal etc shapes and I still have a plan to make my own Settlers of Catan in 3D due to this tool....

your idea sounds great... I am planning for showcasing minis a similar idea... numerous mini dioramas be sure that I will take notes of your work

for my own project...well i think since i am working with the system of styrodur tiles that i want to do some ice and lava tiles for my D&D setup... but that still might change in the fullness of time...

Great ideas so far. Good luck, Josh!
Mac, the diorama piece sounds awesome. Good luck with the tiny shrubberies.
Vik, as if I needed another tool to buy and stash somewhere in the garage where Mrs. Jazzy Jeff won't complain about.

As for my piece, I'm stuck somewhere between two ideas.

One, would be to make a diorama display piece for a squad of Catachan Jungle Fighters. Catachan is, after all, very dangerous terrain. The most hostile of environments, where every native flora and fauna seem determined to eradicate all outsiders. Where a single night is more dangerous than any battlefield.

Or . . .

Some sort of deathtrap jump for Gaslands. I'm picturing spikes and drills and nasty, car-smashing grinders. Perhaps somehow a vat of acid and/or a flaming hoop. Then, either a jump or a causeway over said deathtrap. Could be used as a finish line that all cars would have to traverse, or a shortcut that would cut out a longer trip around.

I got some dart tips and golf shoe crampons for many of the spikey/grindy bits. I'm leaning toward the second option.

I'll give this a shot which also gives me a reason to use these blocks, not guaranteeing that it will be finished but will have a go.

Have to try and see what style of base will work.

Ideas will be to think back to dangerous terrain tests, ah 3rd edition comes back to haunt

I don't think I've progressed at all save for keeping a couple of yogurt pots. Creating something new is hard!

I've sketched mine out, made a few design decisions, and assembled tools and materials. I'm excited to put my new hot wire foam cutter to work, but I'm going to wait for a filter mask before I spend too much time leaning over it. I have a few days off next week and should get all the cutting done then, so I'll have pics coming soon.

TyranidHorde and endtransmission, what are your big picture visions? Maybe we can help move the ideas forward?

I've managed to make some progress thanks to uncovering a box full of train track that I thought I'd sold years back, which fixes the problem I had printing the train tracks I'd made in Blender that refused to print. Let the trainline recommence

I was tempted to have a go at some factory walkways with vats of acid beneath it using the yogurt tubs as my vats. I picked up some cheap pound shop 2 part epoxy as well to give water effects a go.

It's either that or maybe trying to achieve damaged power station module with leaking fluid could be cool.

Are those train tracks going to be all on those modular pieces? That will be cool. I like the crater so far.
Some neat ideas out there.
Mine isn't much past an idea, made no progress. But, I want to make a huge car-crushing pit, then have either a big jump over it or a raised path that crosses it. It would be a piece of Gaslands terrain that you could make a choice to attempt or go the longer and safer way around.

The whole pit will be full of spikes, gears, grinding wheels, etc. If you fall in, your car is toast.

The hexes? No, I've made those in Blender along with some risers. The crater came from a kickstarter

I've made a little progress on the cannibal house:

One bento box frame is a little too short to represent one floor of a 28mm scale building, so I built the ground floor up a bit. I'm planning to either have the second floor nest inside the lower floor and be removable for gaming. Either that or simply make it a loft. We'll see which I can pull off. The floor is balsa strips, cut and glued down unevenly to make them look warped with age.

Great starts and ideas!

endtransmission, those railroad hexes look cool... looks like a stack of a dozen or more in the picture? I'm wondering how big the collection is. I like the idea of a fully modular table done that way. Mine is two-foot tiles and theres only so many ways those go together...

Josh, I love the wood floor! I've never really done much with wood as a material, but I'd like to. DJ built some awesome wooden billboards for his Gaslands table and Mothsniper had some very detailed beams in the mirror dungeon last time, and then there's Thumpingbear's halftimbered Mordheim terrain... but I've never tried it.

TyranidHorde, which ever you choose, check out Captain Brown's toxic waste pools for his Necromunda table... he nailed some very cool effect with paint as well as resin.

DJ, how will you manage the actual pit for the tabletop... elevate the surrounding terrain, or some sort of optical illusion? Maybe a bit of both? Let me know if you need any XPS foam cut to spec.
