AoS myself, however I have been playing
40K for a while. I was hoping to get some help with getting him started. He wants an army with good magic ability, but something that can be started fairly quickly and we might be able to find some deals on the secondary market for to mitigate some of the costs. I was thinking Tzeentch, but was wondering what the experts here think.
As other's said plenty of armies can do decent showing on magic. Best ones would be seraphon/tzeentch/lumineth though(in no particular order) though. Those will be doing tons of work there if you so choose. But others can do pretty damn sweet. Echo on gloomspite comments. They have cheap wizards and quite a lot of useful spells. I'm rarely out of things to do with them in hero phase
Couple notes on tzeentch though. Their battletome is fairly powerful though so depending on local power level it's very easy to lean onto the side of "how am I supposed to beat them?". Might not be issue but if others are running more casual lists it can be practically auto wins if you don't lean on. Pink horrors in particular can be basically unkillable anvil if tooled up(100 wounds, you get d3x5 wounds back in turn and if you get 1's on fate dice battleshock phase will give you
d6*5 wounds back...). Not unbeatable but some armies simply can't generate wounds fast enough. Last time I faced that was with troll heavy gloomspites and opponent ended up with more horrors on board than he started with...
Biggest worry is if you are starting
AOS yourself to play with him I would try to look at battletome that can compete on more even terms. Some armies like sylvaneth have old battletome and are playing the game on hard mode so to speak. But mind you it's not like tzeentch cannot be built on more toned down lists. It's just it's very easy to build list that will be giving run for money on any tournament list and if players you face aren't playing on that level it can lead to having hard time finding opponents soon.
Also that leads to rather expensive army quickly as you will basically need 2 blue/brimstone horror per pink horror box at least to some degree(depending on how many blue/brimstone you bring back. Mind you with pink horrors coming back it's not case of "I have 20 pink horrors in list so 40 blue's is max I will ever need"! Depending on how things go you could end up with some 60+ blue(or brimstone) horrors on field at once...
And then comes summoning...especially if you have gone magic heavy army you will be summoning stuff in no time. If you then face magic heavy army like lumineth those summoning points will rack up real fast...
Seraphon also have summoning but their summoning speed is more controllable(unless you have engine of the gods and get really, really, really lucky with it).
Lumineth has zero summoning so that's cost predictable army. What you put on list is what you pay. No "oh damn I got my 4th unit of pink horrors summoned but only have 3... issue). But being new army model prices are higher and less after market for them probably.
