Hey all

Just going to throw this out there because it's been bugging me for some time, this may be a ramble...

Obviously I love Games Workshop's IP (mostly, I don't much care for AoS, I much prefer The Old World as set out in the Felix/Gotrek series, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and WFB). And I love 40k, obviously. But there's never been a game that really comes close to 40k on the grand scale I recall reading about in the books of lore of yore (I started reading about the 40k universe back in the very early 90s if not the very late 80s).

Dawn of War 1 was good. I played it extensively, I was involved (under my gaming pseudonym) in the Dark Angels full race mod (I wasn't responsible for some of the new models though, so they're not my fault) as well as a mod that adds the campaign wargear to the skirmish mode. So it's safe to say that I enjoyed the hell out of DoW 1. But it still wasn't quite 40k for me. It's an RTS with a 40k flavour and is very much focused, even with mods, on small scale ground skirmishes. Plus these days it's severely dated graphically.

Back in the mid 90s you had Final Liberation. That was based on Epic. Recently there's been a similar game, a reskin of an old game called Panzer General I am led to believe, titled Warhammer 40,000 Armageddon. They're both turn based so not really my cup of tea and Final Liberation hasn't aged well, and despite several attempts I just can't get into even playing more than one mission.

There's also the two Battlefleet Gothic Armadas, if you like the idea of WW2 ship combat in space it's a reasonable game, but having put many hours into the story mode of Armada 2 I've stalled because it's too repetitive.

Of course there have been other 40k branded titles, dozens of them, most are what others call shovelware these days (I tend to agree with them), but those above are the one's I tend to look at as somewhat trying to encompass the massed battles of the 40k universe.

It just seems however that you get little bits here (Space Marine, Eisenhorn), little bits there (Space Hulk, Dawn of War, Battlefleet Gothic), of the grand scale of 40k, but never the whole thing, and often the bits you do get are of dubious quality.

I'd love for example to see a Total War 40k (With Total War Warhammer they've somewhat done WFB justice imo). Although I guess that would be missing the Battlefleet Gothic element. Back in 2006 there was a Star Wars RTS (Star Wars Empire at War) which encompassed ground combat and space combat and that was pretty good, so we know such a game is possible.

Basically I guess I'm bored with 40k video games already out there (none forthcoming inspire me either), I like the idea of Epic, but there's no decent video game of it, and to get into it on the tabletop requires buying up hugely expensive oop tiny little miniatures and dated titans, thus I yearn for a 40k game that is epic Epic, i.e. has space combat between battleships, alongside ground battles with masses of tanks, troops, titans and other walkers.

I'd also like a The Old World open world rpg along the lines of Elder Scrolls Oblivion/Skyrim (not an MMO like already exists, i.e. Age of Reckoning/Return of Reckoning), but that's for another thread...

Discuss away.

Closest game you will find to that is Final Liberation although it is a bit long in the tooth now. Still a cracking good game though a decent approximation of larger 40K battles.

I very much share your feelings. I think I’ve been looking for something similar. There’s two games I’ve found to scratch this particular itch. Gladius and warhammer 40k Armageddon.

I love Gladius. It’s probably the closest we’ve come to an actual grand scale 40k simulation. It’s a bit bothersome that there’s so much dlc but still. You also kind of have to find your fun in Gladius. Like when you set up a game nothing stops you from putting only ork players vs Imperial guard. Or Eldar vs necrons and so on. My favorite setup was 6 allied tyrannids vs myself as guards. Check it out if you’re looking for grand scale 40k. It’s a good time and easily the closest 40k has come to a large scale sandbox simulator.

Warhammer 40k Armageddon... you know what? I’m just going to be lazy and link an old video by total biscuit. It’s epic-ish and let’s you play through the war for Armageddon as either the imperium or orks (in dlc). Pretty good but a bit repetative. Also surprisingly good story following the events of ghazkulls original invasion.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I don’t know how I managed to combine love for such different games as Warhammer 40k and Minecraft for so many years.
