So you're settling down to paint/build etc., and you want some additional motivation while working on your faction. What movies line up to their 40k equivalent?

1. Starship Troopers - Guard and Nids
2. Battle Los Angeles - Tau?
3. Aliens - Nids again, maybe scions.
4. District 9 - Kroot and Tau?
5. Avatar - Aeldari/Exodites and marines (maybe)
6. Not sure about Predator...dont have an alien race that matches closely enough in game currently.

What about chaos, orks, admech, Harlequins, grey knights, sisters, necrons?

I'd say Avatar's aliens look like Kroot, not District 9 ones. Aliens from District 9 look more like Nurgle stuff.

Necrons are easy: Terminator. Regular dudes at least. And Wraiths remind of some insect robots from Matrix Revolutions.

Star Wars' stormtroopers are the Space Marines counterparts. Not superhumans but still armored soliders fighting for the evil empire .

Doom: Chaos Daemons.

Stargate: Thousand Sons.

I'd do Aliens as GSC, not Nids; Starship Troopers is way more Nid.

Event Horizon is apparently what happens when you try to go through space using warp drives without proper procedures. Or so I've read.

I've also read both Aliens and Predator are Imperial Guard, Catachans or Cadians. Just on a smaller scale to Starship Troopers with slightly different variations to Genestealers and Tyranids - the predator being a humanoid Lictor for example.

I'm sure there are things in many Sci-Fi movies you can point to in 40k, but personally I don't think there's any movie that directly lines up with stuff in 40k, they're all a bit of a stretch.

Predator is a squad of Catchacans vs. a lictor.

The lictor you can make arguments for how close it comes to the movie. Sure it’s a bio-monster, not a high tech alien. But it’s still a super stealth ambush predator.

Hellraiser - Drukhari vs. a terran settlement.

I get that, but its not quite a good match for actual army inspiration. Perhaps a kill team mission I guess.

For all its flaws the 80s Dune could work to paint up Space Marines.

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Predator:
Catachans vs. Striking Scorpion Exarch

Exarch has the same hairstyle, faible for being stealthy and packs a punch in close combat.

Lictor on the other hand is way too big and doesn't use technological equipment.

Predator is definitely the Striking Scorpions.

I think the point of my post got lost on a few (not singling you out).

If you were sitting down to paint an Eldar army....would watching Predator give you that little extra inspiration?

Doesn't even need to be sci-fi, for example, if I was painting Praetorian Guard, I'd be watching Zulu or the Four Feathers.
