Got this last month and did the Xenomorphs in it over a couple of days last week. Tried to colour match them to the movie props (I included some reference images) and happy with how they came out. Not sure I’m 100% happy with the bases though as they kind of make a colour mulch with the models themselves, leadbelcher/nuln oil and blotches of Agrax Earthshade. Not sure what to do but thought maybe of glazing with a blue to shift the bases in a different direction?

The general rule is 'bright model, dark base; dark model, bright base'.

So try drybrushing some silver onto a base and see if that makes you like it better. Doesn't have to be a real heavy drybrush, just enough to bring some shine to the edges. It's easier to go back and add more if needed than to take it away once it's on...

Individually, the models look great. In a group, though, they all blend together. Given the subject, this could be a feature as much as a flaw. Perhaps slightly brighter basing will help break them up a little...

As said above add some details that make the bases standout, the normal warning chevrons, some green stuff to represent cables or the resin stuff ie the gunk on the hive walls or maybe a little flare as a nod to when ripely went to find newt. The Xenomorphs themselves are cracking and you done a good job on them it’s just the bases are a bit mute.

Why bark yourself when you have a dog?
Have you met my dog?

Thanks for the tips folks, will experiment with some silver and some Alien hive gubbins and see how it looks.

At first glance the last pic made me think, why does he have an H R Ginger dick statue?

It’s what he would have wanted.

Your Xenomorphs look good! I actually have a bunch coming up on my painting queue, and I'm having a hard time deciding what I'm going to do, and especially how I'm going to make them stand out from the bases. Right now I'm thinking of using neutral blacks and greys for the bodies, and slightly warmer tones for the bases.

That would work, and should be quick enough to do too.

One thing I want to do when I go back to jazzing up the bases is also do some saliva on some of the mouths, I bought some UHU all purpose clear goo, I mean, glue to try out after seeing some cool Tyranid videos online.

They look great!

I think it's really difficult with Aliens. If you stick to the letter with their design then they are meant to be black as night and meld into the background - it's part of what makes them look so terrifying (other than phallic symbiology )

If you can search out the AvP thread (in the depths of the Boardgames sub-forum I think) there were some other examples from a few posters in there - a French poster (I forget this name unfortunately) did some really great stuff with slime and a red/brown hue to the miniatures. It might be worth checking out.

I am just getting ready to paint mine at the moment, but doing the Marines first. They are really cool little miniatures.

Some good stuff in that thread, that red/brown is very “dog alien” from Alien 3 (which I’d love a model of). The discussion about Thriller was hilarious as that’s exactly the thought that went through my head when I saw the Aliens first - not sure what the sculptor was going for in that particular design!
