Hello!

I would like to ask if you know any brand of (moderately cheap) synthetic brushes that I could use, mainly for metallic paints and washes (I already have a couple with kolinsky sable for the standard acrylics). I am really tired of cheap made-in-china brushes that, even with the proper care (rinsed frequently and soap afterwards), disintegrate and lose their tip in a matter of two painting sessions.

Thanks.

For metallics I buy the cheap "8 brushes for $7" packs at the arts and crafts store. Use until they're no longer usable and move on to the next one.

I haven’t noticed metallic paints affecting my brush. Do you mean leadbelcher as an example?

Windsor Newton cottman are the best synthetic brushes I have used and last a good amount of time if cared for properly.

Yes, Leadbelcher, Retributor Armour and any other paint that contains microscopic metal flakes to give the shine.

Not really what you asked for, but you can find several types of extra cheap brushes at a dollar store. I've bought a few packs to use as throw away brushes for uses that would ruin good brushes. Near me, I can get a variety 7 pack, a set of 5 larger brushes for large vehicle panels, terrain, washing, and glue work, and a set of 3 pack that are a bit nicer for more detailed needs. All for only $1 each. Sure, they probably won't last long, but at that price they really don't need to and you won't have to worry about ruining good brushes. I actually get a bunch of cheap craft tools at the dollar stores, though it's mostly for terrain work.

So why do you feel you need a different brush for Metallics? I’ve never heard this before

If you aren’t happy with expensive kolinsky brushes I would still go for a decent synthetic. Any cheap brush I have tried, with any kind of paint, quickly becomes unusable. Even if accuracy is not required then getting a smooth layer still needs a brush with bristles pointing in generally the same direction

I used the first kolinsky that I bought for everything: paints, metallics, washes, etc. The brush was destroyed a couple of weeks later. Now I use the kolinsky one only for standard paints, almost 1 year and still rocking. That's why I use synthetics for metallics and everything else.
