Something I've been mulling around a bit. Can a Splintered Genius, Ancient Evil Drukhari Archon fight twice before the target of his Ancient Evil gets a chance to fight at all? The relevant rules:

Ancient Evil

At the start of the Fight phase, you can select one enemy unit within Engagement Range of this WARLORD. That unit is not eligible to fight this phase until after all eligible units from your army have done so.

Splintered Genius

Once per battle, at the end of the Fight phase, if this model is within Engagement Range of any enemy units, it can fight again.

The arguments as I see them are:

1. After the Archon has fought once, 'all eligible units' have fought (it doesn't say 'fight all possible fights' or something like that) so the target can now be selected.

2. The end of the phase means after the target has become eligible and gotten a chance to swing. This is a very literal reading of 'end of the Fight phase'.

3. An argument in favor of the Archon getting to fight twice first; he remains an eligible unit for activation until the controlling player chooses to activate or pass on the ability, thus forcing the target unit to wait before selection.

Thoughts?

The target of the Ancient Evil would still get to attack before the Archon could use Splintered Genius. You don't reach the end of the Fight phase until everybody has had a chance to fight, including a unit that is suffering from Ancient Evil. That unit just goes after other units not similarly affected; it does NOT say that the unit fights at the end of the Fight phase.

Agreed. If the archon is an eligible unit, and has fought, the requirements for ancient evil are fulfilled, and the enemy unit gets to fight. After that, the archon fights again at the end of the fight phase.

Agreed with the above,
'End of Phase' is a specific point on the timeline, any rules lacking this terminology will need to be resolved prior to a rule containing it.
Failing to do so means this Rule is being resolved in the entirely wrong Phase of the game... MAAAADNESSS!

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
