I think you get the best metallic black by using black, and then light edging with a dark silver like leadbelcher, or even a mixture of grey edging and light spotting to look like scratches catching the light.

I used to do this by mixing black colour with a drop or two of vallejo metallic medium.

Next, I'll be testing how to do a similar thing with AK Xtreme Metals, they are tricky to use because of the long drying times of enamel and the superhot solvent is nasty to work with, but should yield an ever better result.

I can attest to this. It's on this mini and on the base.

If you're getting Adamantium Black, get Gunmetal Blue too!

Interesting. Is it actually a Metallic, or is it a satin finish that gives the sheen?

I've used a craft paint called "Sequin Black" that has gold mixed in.

Gun metal grey by vallejo metal colour. It's very dark especially over a black base coat

Secret Weapon Miniatures have a metallic black too. Dark Iron I think it's called. Their paints are very good quality, but hard to get outside the US.

I ordered their pigments and a few of their acrylics and got destroyed with import duties, so beware of you can't source them locally.

I tried several options via airbrush and I wasn't really impressed with any.
- Vallejo Metal Gunmetal Grey
- Vallejo Metal Magnesium
- Scale75 Black Metal
- GreenStuffWorld Anthrax Metal
- Vallejo Metal Silver mixed with Black ink
- Vallejo Metal Silver + Black templar glaze
- Vallejo Metal Silver + Black ink glaze

The last two are most black, but they loose most of shine. You can get some of it back with Vallejo Metal Varnish.

That is what I use as well. I like to prime black, hit the model with black metallic, primarily from below, then use a gun or brighter silver as zenital highlight.
That way I have a bit of metallic effect in the shadow areas, which sells the idea that the brighter areas are the same material.
Works great on all mechanical stuff, i.e. AT, IK, Ad-Mech etc. Doesn't even really need shade that way, but can be improved with it.
