I am looking for a skellies kit to use in skirmish/solo/co-op games. I am using plastic (HIPS) only so my choices are limited. I do not like Wargames Atlantic skellies proportions and Oathmark ones are not fun to build with fragile limbs etc. This kit looks like a better one because the minis look really good, and seems to have better arm joints and generally look to be more sturdy. Please tell me pros and cons of this kit. Thank you

Pros: Looks cool and has decent options
Cons: total pain to assemble due to bad choices with how they fit together and fiddly bits

It's been a long time since I assembled any myself. Last time was when they first came out and I was just helping someone with their Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings. Together we assembled roughly 80 skeletons from the two factions including a box or two of the current kit. It was... an experience. Newer ones looked better, but the old ones were much simpler to build since everything was pretty clear. Still a pain though with tiny contact points requiring them to be held until the glue set. Luckily for us, I had Cyanoacrylate glue and Insta-Set spray at the time, so it was a lot less time consuming than it could have been using standard GW plastic glue.

However, I recently saw a thread on dakka talking about it, and it seems the general consensus is similar to what I remember. https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/797693.page

I have a bunch of those guys, and they weren't too bad to assemble - but I was expecting to have to be careful, skellies are fragile!

But I think they look magnificent, and are well worth the effort.

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Current GW skellies have quite nice detail but they are somewhat fragile and every model has the same walking pose.

If you are not in a hurry the I'd suggest waiting couple months for new Skeleton models to be released. They look really nice:

On the other hand, if you really like the way the current sculpt look a lot, get a few boxes to have in your army mix for the visual variety and experience since they'll likely shoot up in price once the new ones hit the shelves and they're OOP. The new ones might also see a price hike, knowing GWs tendencies...

Thanks guys
Fragile parts and tiny connection points were the problems I had with Oathmark skellies so I will skip the current GW ones too. I will wait for the new ones although they have too much armor for my taste but who knows, maybe it is optional and the ''naked'' ones are possible? Will they be pricey? It is GW so yeah, still I would not need more than 2 boxes max, if even that. As to Morteks, I admit it had crossed my mind to use them as skellies so who knows

What kind of look would you most prefer? Just bare bones with maybe some minor bits of armor like the really old GW skellies?

Upcoming GW skellies are very armoured indeed and it doesn't look like you can assembled them without armour. On a positive side, armour and clothing add volume to the joints and they don't look fragile at all.

Yeah, something like that would be the best.

This is really the positive thing for me as it makes them less prone to damage. It may be the deciding factor for purchasing them.

Well, if you or someone you know or someplace near you has a 3D printer, you could always try Shapeways and similar sites.

A quick search on Shapeways didn't yield anything for me, but I did find this set on cgtrader that is I think exactly what you want: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-print-models/miniatures/figurines/10-undead-skeleton-warriors-with-sword-and-shield-28mm-3d

If you want more options, find a decent file of printable assorted weapons and convert away!

Thanks, but It would mean resin? Plastic = Hips only for me

No idea if it would mean resin. I haven't been able to get into 3D printing yet myself, but I imagine there's at least one plastic option.

Another possibility I remembered last night is trying to get your hands on some old Wargames Factory Skeletons. They disappeared for a while, but they've been rereleased by Warlord Games with less quantity in the box it seems.

Product: https://store.warlordgames.com/products/skeleton-warriors

And an unboxing video if you want a preview of what exactly you are getting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlqyV8WEZT0

I know them. They are very posable and look great but would cause all the troubles mentioned above and more (imagine you have separate feets to glue). Thanks anyway

Yeaaaah, the separate feet are kinda confusing. I mean, who looked at the industry standard of legs and feet as one and thought, "I think people would like it better if they had to glue the feet on too!"

I think your best options are either accept armor as the current industry style for solidly built skellies, accept fiddly bits and fragile construction on non-armored skellies, or find a 3D printer and print your own to taste, whether you buy the designs or make them yourself.

I guess from the current options I will wait and buy a box of the GW new skellies. They can always count as more armored version (In Frostgrave for example, there is distinction for armored and ''naked'' ones) if the future brings a new plastic, easy to build/non-fragile kit.

Hey, I found a Kickstarter today that seems almost like exactly what you were looking for. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/3dipstudios/horsemen-of-the-apocalypse-army

A quick search around google also yielded a number of 3D printers that can print in plastic rather than resin. This one is highly rated and affordable. https://www.amazon.com/Comgrow-Creality-Ender-Aluminum-220x220x250mm/dp/B07BR3F9N6/ref=asc_df_B07BR3F9N6

Oof, I got the pop up message warning about necroing a dead thread since apparently this thread is more than three months old, even if the last post was only just over a month ago. However, I feel like this is relevant enough to put in here both for the original poster and anyone who might come later looking for similar information. The kickstarter might have ended by then, but it will likely have a link to a webstore where they can get the files at that point. Here's hoping I don't draw the mods ire with my necromancy.

To get the most out of the STLs from that kickstarter, you really need a resin printer.

Also if the FDM printer is just to get the models in plastic, consider that the PLA filament typically used on printers is fundamentally different to HIPS. PLA is a total pain in the bum to work with.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Is it? Thanks, I didn't know that. I knew that resin and plastic were different, but I didn't realize there were significant differences in the types of plastic for 3D printing.

I commented earlier about waiting for new GW Skeletons. Unfortunately they turned out to be quite fragile too. The pelvis-to-torso joint has been greatly improved. It's easy to glue and no longer the weak spot. However, legs are really thin and prone to breaking when removing parts from the sprue. I haven't glued any new Skeletons on bases yet, it is possible that gluing them down improves the stability considerably. Earlier comment about shoulder joints remains valid, they are solid.

I think GW went too technical with new skellies. They could have sculpted legs as part of body like they did with push-fit Ulfenwatch from Cursed City.

Yeah, heard many people had their skellies damaged so now I am waiting with the purchase. Maybe it was only the first run or small number of boxes?

Skinny legs of the new skellies are an issue only while removing parts from the sprue. Once glued on a base, they aren't as quite as fragile. The poses actually works to their advantage. When the legs are bent at knee and pointed at different directions, there is less overall stress on them. Pelvis joint is solid and the skirt also supports the legs to certain extent.
