So the quest to reduce the giant pile of Primaris goes ever onwards, so I'm building a Deathwatch army. This is my trial mini, he's one of the Inflitrators from Shadowspear/SC Vanguard SM.

Of course I only noticed the highlighting error after photography.

Anyways, for black I airbrushed INSTAR pure black and edge highlighted with Eshin Grey and Dawnstone. INSTAR Pure Black is a lovely satin black and lots easier to work with than Citadel Abaddon Black.

Thermal smoke grenade go!

I was honestly surprised how dark Drakenhof Nightshade is over silver(s). Definitely worth pinwashing to reduce extra rebuilding of color.

Rainbow Warriors chapter because it's one of the easiest chapter symbols to freehand that isn't a Black Templar.

Lots of effort went into double edge highlighting the armor, but it really keeps it from being a black void of a mini.

And he's at it again! This will sure be interesting to follow, especially after those Sisters. I love how the bright martian bases complement the red weapon casing, very stylish. Any particular timeline with this project?

Anything I say, unless expressly noted, is my own opinion. Take it as you will

No, I sort of save that for Christmas projects, but I do have a week off coming up soon so I can get some decent progress done then.

Had a good amount of free time today, so here's two more Infiltrators.

Massive respect to the painters who do detailed freehand paint jobs, as even doing a couple chapter badges has proved pretty challenging for me.

And the last two from the squad are done.

Deathwatch Phobos Librarian.

Not 100% sold on the red robes, but black would have been too much and Deathwatch doesn't have a hugely varied palette. Blue kneecap for being a librarian. The right shoulder is completely covered, so his chapter affiliation is super-duper secret.

Pretty happy with how the sword turned out, but it's my standard power sword formula, but I did add some hashes, and I think it's an improvement.

And I still wonder if I should have done one glove in silver, but silver cloth feels a bit silly to me.

I like that power sword and those red robes. I don't think the robes are too much, rather, I think they sell the idea that the marines in Phobos armor are trying to be sneaky. Red robes for camo on a red martian planet makes sense to me!

Finished some Eliminators. Only one chapter badge to freehand. It's from Angels of Defiance, in case anyone is wondering.

Of course, 5 Eliminators isn't a legal squad, unless it's part of a Kill Team Spectrus.

And with the Phobos Librarian, that's a minimum Patrol Detachment.

That's 380 points done!

Finished some Deathwatch Intercessors.

Hi John,

Your deathwatch are looking great!

I think your doing a good job on the freehands, the thought of even attempting something like those chapter symbols fills me with dread.

I really like the power sword blade on the librarian, would you mind sharing your process?

I'm going through a lot of SM chapters to find freehand friendly symbols. I think GW did us a disservice by making many chapter heraldry far too overcomplicated to freehand.

Sure, it's actually really simple. Basecoat your sword with silver - any silver paint will do. Then give it a coat of Terradon Turquoise contrast paint. Edge highlight the edges with Sybarite Green, then a second edge highlight of Gauss Blaster Green. I thicken the edge highlights as I get closer to the tip of the sword. No blending required.

Thanks John I look forward to giving it a try!

More progress! This time, five Hellblasters.

Black Inculpators, Avenging Sons, Black Consuls, Ultramarines, Black Talons.

With those done, I have a Fortis Kill Team.

And that was my original plan for my first Deathwatch units, though I did get a few more things and am recycling some unfinished stuff from my past. So I'm not done here just yet! But here's a full progress shot.

I'm tempted to convert some of the Indomitus Primaris Assault Marines into Deathwatch - not as part of a Kill Team (though they could be used for it), but as a big block of chainsword boys (and as my third troop choice for a proper Batallion).

Subbed once again for the speed armies

DW are looking good John, the highlighting really helps the black armour and I'm surprised you didn't go for a contrast paint for the black, it can be quite speedy and you don't always need to highlight it.

Not sure I'm sold on the red robes as they merge with the orange basing, but I guess it works out that they'd be camouflaged to match their surroundings!

The problem with using contrast for the majority of the basecoat is that touching up mistakes is a serious pain in the butt. Since I'm using 3 layers of metallics (Leadbelcher, Vajello Chainmail Silver and Silver), I end up with small flecks of silver paint in random places. Instead I'm using INSTAR's Pure Black, which airbrushes nicely as the basecoat and covers up mistakes seamlessly afterwards with a normal brush.

And I just like clean edge highlights. Subtle shading looks better in photos but not on the tabletop IMO.

I plan to add some brighter elements to the basing, just like I did for my Farsight Enclaves, so the red cloaks won't blend into the bases too much.

Time for a Primaris Captain.

Pretty happy with the chapter badge on this one. Not a perfect Raptor icon, but good enough.

First five Assault Intercessors done.

Flesh Tearers, Blood Wings, Genesis Chapter, Blood Angels, and Black Guard. I could honestly see myself freehanding an entire army of Genesis Chapter icons, it's a pretty friendly geometric icon. Flesh Tearers, OTOH, forget it.

These were converted from Indomitus marines. It wasn't too hard to carve off the shoulderpad and replace it with a Deathwatch pad, but some of the joints are a little rough. The silver paint does a pretty good job of hiding any janky joint work. I did add in a thunder hammer from vanguard veterans, because I felt it was a moral obligation.

Great work and rapid progress John, as if we expect anything less! I personally love the red capes, they work well with the black armour.

Thanks! Red and black are pretty much no-brainer color combos, and faithful to Deathwatch established schemes anyways.

Second half of the Assault Intercessors are done!

Sable Swords, Storm Giants, Valedictors, Victors and War Bearers.

And that means the squad is finished:

Which further means I have a legal Battalion! 960 points under the 'old' points values, though given the new tournament points news/rumors it will probably fall to 935, which would let me squeeze in a company champion under 1000 points for that sweet, sweet 5++ bubble relic.

Barely enough room in my lightbox to photograph them all! I still have to varnish them, but I'm quibbling on adding more orange rock to the bases (all the tactical rocks have been painted orange) before varnishing and putting flock and tufts down.

Well that was fast! Looking great so far, and the flock and turfs will help tie the whole group together.

5 weeks, more or less. I had a week off in May and work was really slow (some half days and the like) until the last week of May and all of the sudden it's overtime city, which is why the Assault Intercessors took 2 weeks to do 10 models

The funny thing is I just want more Troops! I'd like to have at least one of each type of Kill Team, though I'm all over the place on how to arm Deathwatch Veterans.

Well, it's been a while but work has been crazy and I haven't much felt like painting, though I am getting a lot of building done. However, I did manage to get this beauty finished.

The Corvus Blackstar is IMO one of the best looking fliers in the game. Maybe not the best flyer, rules-wise, but GW worked some kinda magic making a flying brick look cool. I gave it Assault Cannons and Blackstar Launchers just to have a ton of shots, as I have other plans for anti-vehicle firepower. Plus, the Assault Cannons look like bundles of dynamite when you paint them red.

The only problem I have with painting vehicles is that I end up rubbing a lot of paint off the edges while handling the things. At least with a Rhino I could glue a base to the bottom and use a painting handle or something. I don't like trusting blu-tac with heavier models!

For the base, I used a combo of Martian Ironcrust and Martian Ironearth. I really like how the two together create a subtle mottling effect, and given how thick you have to apply Ironcrust to get any cracking, it saves a lot of texture paint.

Thank you! I always find vehicles a chore, and I know I'll probably have to do another one sometime (so I have a lascannon/missile version, plus I bought a foam tray that fits 2 ), but I'm happy with the end product.
