I know this is a "whatever you want" question, but I'm just trying to see what other people do with the Spirit Stones on their larger Eldar models like a wraithlord. Do you turn every bump into a gem? Pick and choose the larger ones? Pick one only? Just looking for thoughts.

Just bumps I paint as part of the armor. If it has a setting, I paint it as a gem.

For my Wraithlords I just painted the largest ones and the ones that were more visible and just left the rest the same colour as the armour. I think painting every single one would be too much IMO.

This is what I do too. Personally I find that when people paint them all as gems it makes the model look too busy, even if it's done well. I feel like they're taking extra time in their painting to make their model look worse - at least to my eyes.

As to whether they're supposed to be gems or not, this WarCom article (quoting Jes, the ultimate eldar design authority):
Not all the bumps and lumps on Eldar technology is, in fact, a gemstone though. Some are simply blisters of electronics and hardware, as Jes Goodwin explains: “Every blip on an Eldar model doesn’t have to be painted like a gem – they’re not all gems. If it’s got a setting around it, it’s a gem. If it’s hasn’t, it’s a blip.” But painters who adore a challenge fret not, “It’s not a hard and fast rule.”

I paint one major one as a spirit stone on my wraithlords.
There'll be a handful of smaller ones done in a contrasting colour for various subsystems/weapons.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Same. I've seen plenty of both and I much prefer "stones in a setting" to "every bump is stone". I've seen a few really well done paintjobs that I can't help but feel like they wanted to paint a Christmas tree because they covered it in colorful gems. I'm not gonna say it's bad or wrong, it's just not appealing to my eyes.

On the other hand, I now kinda want to make a Christmas themed CWE army just for the laughs. Make it the green/white craftworld but in a dark green and stark white, airbrush some snowflakes onto the green parts with stencils, and paint all the bumps like ornaments and lights. Maybe try to freehand some light stands and garlands onto larger units and vehicles like they were wrapped. I can't be the first one to think of this though and I'm willing to bet there's pictures of quality paintjobs like this somewhere.

I'll be the contrarian here. I don't have any photos, but my sister painted some Biel-tan wraithguard and painted every bump to be a red gemstone. It looked nice. Reminded me of mistletoe. I think if you picked a single color for the gems, and there weren't too many other colors, I think it would look nice.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

I give ALL thoughts and ideas merit. I have seen both ways look great and both ways look bad. So thanks for sharing. Still undecided, but my failing eyesight may decide this.
