Someone put up a thread regarding beast snaggas saying that these were basically the start of the primaris Orks release.

I thought it was a bit of an over reaction but now I’ve just seen the pain boss, a pain boy but better. Which concerns me that we are going to get a series of units that are the same but better stats with a slightly different name.

I mean mad doc is a painboy will he be buffed to a pain boss???? Is this the ork rubicon???

And if anything it feels a bit worse thought out than primaris. At least we didn’t go from tactical squad to advanced tactical squad

Painbosses have existed in the fluff for a while (Lexicanum says as least 4th Edition), in much the same way we have the Mekboy > Big Mek > Mek-Boss progression.

Having different tiers of characters is nothing new and especially not a Primaris thing.

3rd edition already had these (probably 1st and 2nd as well, but I didn't play those) Sisters just got their lower tier hero.

Focus more on getting new sculpts that don't invalidate your old models and actually expand the range.

Pain bosses have been around for ages. It's like a Nob or Warboss version of a Painboy. Also, orks get bigger the longer they fight and survive. Boss models should be big.

I can understand the initial fear, but the Painboss is just a continuation of how Orkz and indeed a alot of armies work.

They're not unprecedented and will warp the faction fluff like Primaris arguably did when they first launched, its just a Nob painboy essentially, with some cool self looted legs!

Please read less idiotic FUD spread by 4chan trolls (and people who uncritically bought that nonsense). It will be good for your mental health.

If there is one faction making complains about getting 'unit X, but bigger and badder' dumb, it's orks. It's like, 90% of their THING in universe.

While power creep on smaller tables with bigger models is a real problem imho, this looks like a conversion opportunity or me using old metal ogryn bodies so... good.

I'm just disappointed he isn't a pigdok, the orks that used to 'juice up' boars into Super-cyboars, because that name is awesome.

Mmm, more of a case that it's stuff that's been gradually left by the wayside because it wasn't represented in the rules/model ya know? It's like if someone mentioned old Zogwort. Who went from an awesome character without a model to a single, tiny little blurb on a page and nothing else. ^^; Hopefully the book will have some fun fluff for us to enjoy.

I think the boars are being ret-conned into these new squig varieties. Which IMO they always should have been; or does every feral ork planet just *happen* to have indigenous war-boars of a specific size and temperment?

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

IIRC, the 'boars' used by orks as mounts were at least implied (if not explicitly stated) to be a sort of squig as far back as 2nd edition.

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.
