GW have announced new brushes

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/05/06/paint-like-a-pro-with-the-new-stc-range-of-synthetic-brushes/

I’m surprised by this considering that most people think citadel brushes are over priced and quite poor when compared to competitors.

I think these are supposed to be better so will probably cost even more. I’m not sure what they are tryi by to achieve I it makes me think they don’t really understand what people want out of brushes and how quickly they get turned into better alternatives.

For the record I do think their dry brushes are good

That's a negative Ghost Rider.
To be honest, I like my cheap synthetics better than my expensive Sables as well.
Either way, never been a fan of GW's brushes. The cost vs quality has always been way off in my opinion.
Not knocking them if they work for you, different strokes for different folks and all.

The biggest problem is that Games Workshop doesn't manufacture their own brushes. They outsource them, so they pay a mark-up, which they then stack their own mark-up on top.

So regardless of what the quality of their brushes ever actually is (they're current brushes are, admittedly, not bad), they will never actually be worth their value compared to something that's in an equivalent price bracket (Raphael 8404, W&N 7 Series, etc. depending on where you get them)

Insofar as brushes? I get my 8404's for $12-$14 CDN a pop, so no. It's almost impossible for any other brand to compete given that I I can't get equivalent substitutes (ie Handovers) for less than double that cost. I could get 7 Series for the $12-$14 range, but I've had consistent issues with their quality control the past 5-6 years so I've steered clear of them.

GW brushes are not best value for money but they aren't worst quality either. They are actually quite good but a bit on the expensive side.

I may give new brushes a try out of interest because I haven't used synthetic brushes in a long while and the ones I did years ago were pants. However, given that new releases are usually delayed at my FLGS I might as well read some reviews while waiting.

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

I really haven’t been impressed with the black handle GW brushes - the Artificer fine detail brush and the dry brushes are good but the layer and base brushes are terrible. Instant deformation of the tip (sounds like a grind core song title...) and bristles popping out at mad angles. I’ll wait and see what the hive mind thinks about these and go from there. I imagine some of them will be good but most will be found wanting.

I'll probably give them a try.

My first thought was, why synthetic? I generally go for even a cheap sable over a synthetic when using acrylics. My synthetics only see use when using enamels or oils where they stand up a lot better.

But yeah, I'll check out reviews when they come out, but not expecting much from them that my current stable of brushes doesn't do better.

I've heard natural sable brushes are better than synthetic anyway, so unless the STC ones are a fair bit cheaper then I'll stick to the Army Painter ones which have served me well for years.

Some people may have issue with how Sable hair is farmed, and would prefer something artificial and manufactured in favor of taking the pelt from an animal.

Depending on the price I'll give them a try,

hopefully these will hold a point better than the black handle ones

I'll still use my sables for the fine detailing anyway

$12-14 CDN? Where are you sourcing your brushes from?

Definitely! They offer free shipping on brushes too, so I always make sure to stock up for 6 month gaps by buying like...a dozen brushes at a time! Really good value!

I do a lot of painting with synthetic brushes, I use Windsor newton cottman 111 and can get most of the work don with these and I have able for fine work. The WN synths I use are the best I’ve tried and appear to be the top end of the spectrum of synthetic brushes.

I might try these in the hope that GW have realised their brushes suck for the money and have done some real research into making a decent synthetic brush that last well and hold a good point. But that doesn’t sound like them. Although no body saw contrast paints coming and although GW didn’t do the best job in explaining contrast paints, because the wanted them to be a quick paint and shade, they have changed the hobby significantly.

I'm not a big fan of synthetics, they've not performed well in my hands, so I expect I will keep using the natural fiber ones I'm familiar with.

The supply does not get to make the demands.
