So I have citadel technical stormshield on hand, but am looking for other suggestions. I'm using resin arms from Anvil and smooth plastic heads from Shapeways. I concerned about chipping or paint falling off.

Anyone have good uses with resin bits and matte varnishes? I'm located in Belgium in case that helps with suggestions.

Do you have an airbrush? If so, I'd reach for any of the various readily available airbrush varnishes and do it that way. I tend to use Vallejo Gloss or Matte, followed up by Vallejo Premium Satin varnish.

You may also want to check out Goobertown Hobbies on Youtube, he did a video a few months back where he rigorously tested various minis with a variety of varnishes. I believe his conclusions were that paint holds on to plastic minis very well regardless of varnish or not, and that pewter minis started to show wear after a while, but it took a lot of handling for it to show.

Liquitex Matte Varnish works great for me
(I put it on over a gloss coat for even greater protection of the mini)

One thing to remember with bottle matte varnish is to shake/stir it aggressively, as the "matte" component settles out.
I drop 2-3 agitators in my bottles

This Right here.

One thing to also note, is that there is little difference between brands.
More expensive ones will require more thinning and cheaper ones will need less.
As long as it’s an acrylic polyurethane varnish then any brand will do.

I use cheap craft stuff myself and have for over 5 years with zero issues regardless of materials.

Any tips on how to succesfully apply matte varnish without changing (dulling or altering the shade) the underlying colours? I've had terrible experiences in the past regarding this, so have opted not to varnish just to be sure I wont ruin my colours..

Same here. I tried the GW munitorum spray varnish on some test models and didn't like how it dulled/faded the colours.

Do a gloss varnish first, then a super light round of matt just to remove the shine from the gloss.

That's what I do when applying decals.

Yes for decals I paint on Ardcoat, apply the transfer then apply Lahmian Medium over the top. That looks fine, but the GW munitorum spray varnish doesn't in my experience...

The less you manipulate it on the figure the better.
Dab the varnish on instead of paint it like you normally would.
Use the brush to prevent pooling with short dabs into the varnish.
It could also be the varnish is ‘too matte’, and instead switch to a satin varnish.
Satin is not quite as matte and only has a slight sheen.

I know it's been a couple days since I've posted this thread, but thank you all for your suggestions. Even a little help if I end up applying decals which is something I am thinking about doing.

Appreciate it all!

Thanks for the tips! So my main takeaway from this is that gloss varnish tends to discolour the miniature less than a matt one, so preferable to always use a gloss varnish and then just lightly dab on matt varnish after everything else to remove the gloss. Did I understand this correctly?

pretty much

both varnishes tend to soften the distinctions between layers and drybrushing as well

so I tend to be more "rough" and use more start contrast
as I know the varnishes will help hide my lack of blending ability!

Anything that changes the sheen will tend to change how a colour looks. Gloss will tend to make colours look deeper, and since it reflects light, some of the effects you painted on the model may be lost to reflectivity.

I've come to dislike varnishes because it's hard to guess what colours will look like after a coat of varnish, and only use varnishes when I really need them.

I've previously used Vallejo matte and found it very successful - definitely give it a good shake though.

When my Vallejo Matte ran out, I bought Liquitex brush on matte varnish because I'd seen it recommended and it was much cheaper by volume.
Not impressed with the results, I would definitely describe it as satin.
It's also thick enough it leaves brush strokes, but gets even shinier if you thin it down (the bottle does insist you DON'T thin it).
