So, I binged this a few days ago while doing some things. From the trailers I saw I wasn't sure how this was going to go.

Personally, I don't think it went well at all. There is a lot going on in this first season and a lot of it was just really really bad. Super campy, the effects were just bad at times, and the story itself was incoherently bad. I really cant say much for the acting in this either. I don't think it was the actors fault though, I don't think they had very good direction.

Anybody else?

I know the source material. I'm only halfway through the episodes, though.

What I would say at this point is that the comics left a LOT hinted at or mentioned in passing, while the show is delving deeply into all that hinted-at background. I've seen some people very critical of the show, but it doesn't seem like they 'get' what it's about. Then again, the show is telling the story differently and very slow-burn style...so maybe *I* don't know what the show is about. It might not be the same things! I need to get through the episodes, and then I can comment better.

I also understand that the show changes some important stuff, and I have a guess as to what one of them is. I'll wait until I finish the season...but if my guess is right, I'm not sure I how feel about that or how much sense it makes.

There are moments in the show when the visuals evoke Frank Quitely's sublime art from the books, which is good. Some of the actors look spot-on.

So the special effects are all over the place. Some of it's really good (that purple glowly laser guy) some of it's pretty bad (some of the flying, the actors running about.). Chalk it up to TV budgets.

That being said, I like the themes and the general story. I think the flipping back and forth between different time periods is sometimes kind of poorly paced. But both stories are good/interesting though the slowness of building up the past kind of sucked. The finale of it for the season was pretty great though.

Id watch another season.

I'm not sure if I should start watching this next or Invincible on Amazon instead. I'm not familiar with the source comics for either. Any suggestions?

I enjoyed it for the most part but.....

Bad
Spoiler:
The main "villian" was so horibly obvious from the first few scenes that I was contsantly hoping that it was not him...but oh he is....
The spoilt poor little rich girl with super powers was....Ughh....just horriblly unsympathetic
The premise that killing one super villian changed the world was ...odd - given that super villians were killing before that - esp cops and that the villian that died had killed three times in that one fight.
The Cthulhu style island was also very cool idea but then it just becomes dull

Good
Spoiler:
I liked many of the characters and some interesting powers.

Will however def watch another season

So the whole season is basically set before issue 1 of the comic. They’re certainly saving content for future seasons, lol.

Something happened in the last episode that was surprising for those familiar with the comic. But did it really happen? I’m not sure.

Do you mean the bit in

the mind of the clone? I assumed it was all an illusion by Walter ?

Was actually referring to

Spoiler:
Raikou's death. Feels like they did that to shake up the comics readers, but it seems almost obvious that it won't stick. Especially given Walter's blathering on about how her abilities were so inferior to his. Guessing he didn't quite see or feel what he thought.

I get why some people don't like the show, but I enjoyed it.

You have two distinct storylines, one a pulp era adventure and then a modern bleak Watchmen like timeline, where all that Golden Age wonder has worn off.

As for the special effects complaints, I think people have gotten spoiled by Marvel movies. It's a superhero series on a Netflix budget.

I quite enjoyed it and thought the two story arcs developing at the same time were very intriguing, as when I started to get bored on one, the other arc would kick-in.

The effects were pretty good for a TV series and also you can get caught up being just a few episodes in this first collection was great - not a huge time investment.

I look forward to season 2.

Yeah, you'll see a lot more develop around the theme of American ideals and such and what's happened to them over time. In many ways season 1 was like an extended prologue...the story should get going more in season 2.

Yes, I've heard elsewhere online that the whole of season 1 basically happens before issue 1 of the comic.

I will add slightly off-topic, but it was brought up, I finished the first season of Invincible. I did enjoy it, but if we are talking about telegraphing who the bad guy was right from the get-go, Invincible does that - even before any super hero carnage occurs.

Spoiler:
"We Viltrumites spread out across the galaxy to help other worlds..." Give me a freaking break, that was so obvious he was there to destroy Earth at some point, not save it. Hopefully the plot begins to thicken a bit, as it seems it will in season 2 with the Mars sequids, OM returning at some point for leaving, the coalition of planets against Viltrum, etc.

However, my vote for which is best might have to go with JL. Time will tell, though.

It appears that there won’t be a second season of Jupiter’s Legacy:
https://screenrant.com/jupiters-legacy-series-cast-contract-release-netflix-details/amp/

I’m a bit disappointed. I wasn’t overly impressed with JL, it felt like a whole let of set up and not much else, but I thought it had potential in future seasons. Especially after I learned that the whole season essentially takes place prior to the start of the source material.

I don’t feel interested in watching a villain based spin-off rather than a second season, which seems to be the direction being developed now.

That's hilarious...cancelled after what was essentially a season-long prologue. But that's Netflix for you. And the creators were playing with fire by taking their time like that. On another streamng service, things might have been different.

And yeah, I have no real interest in a spinoff.

Yes, I am bummed... But, it was also Netflix that dropped the highly successful Daredevil after 3(?) seasons due to license conflict - was that the case here too, or just the 'meh' response to the first season?

Probably the latter...

It apparently did okay.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jupiters-legacy-nielsen-streaming-ratings-1234962632/

But Netflix isn't interested in nurturing series. They're generous with the money at first, but if the show doesn't bust out in a big way, you can forget about a season 2. They'll just go on to the next thing. Rinse and repeat.

It's pretty awful for creators, really...other than the fact that it seems like they'll greenlight one season of just about anything. So why Millar and company went the route they did with the show is beyond me. They should have gone for broke and not a slow burn. I'm not at all shocked by Netflix's decision here.

Netflix pretty much demands everything to be "Game of Thrones" big, or it's a failure. There's a couple of series I am absolutely SHOCKED that they got a season two. For instance, Ragnorok. Slow burn, foreign and dubbed, pretty much the recipe for a Netflix post season 1 murder. But then it got a Season Two.

Meh, I couldn't get thru season 1. Just wasn't interesting and was way, way to slow. So I'm not shocked.

I think there are country/regional considerations that also come into play with the ex-US-produced stuff. I'm gonna guess Dark and The Rain wouldn't have continued based on US viewership if they'd been US-produced.

Shows sometimes need to be nurtured, and Netflix is just the worst with that. It's too bad people won't get to see 'the real' story with JL. They were just starting to get into the main themes. But again...I don't know what the creators were thinking, given who was holding the bag of money.

I was really happy to hear that HBO Max is picking up a third season of Warrior. Wasn't sure if that was going to happen since it was original a Cinemax show. HBO/HBO Max knows how to nurture.

It had it's good moments, but not nearly as many as some shows that got canned after season 1.

It got me to finally read the comics and...

What the heck Netflix?

The whole season is basically half of issue 1! Once things get going and we have the shocking reveal..
Spoiler:

The comics promptly launches into a superhero civil war followed by a take over of the government, a guerilla war, a great scene where the Cool Guy says "The plan is simple, we kick their ass" and then is promptly killed cause it turns out just being the cool guy does not qualify you to take on 100 highly skilled superheroes at once.

That would have been a show worth watching.

Definitely better than spending half the show on a Lovecraft homage so apparent someone name checks Lovecraft in case you missed it.
