Hello all,

Two of my friends recently bought the middle sized getting started box. So they are now busy painting their Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunt.
This is an excellent opportunity for me to return to the game after not having played for about 15 years.

I mainly enjoyed the painting experience, but was never very good at the table. I always just brought what I thought looked good.
For now all they have is this getting started box, but it can be expanded if needed. Perhaps we'll do an escalation league.

So I am looking for an army which is different from theirs, but not something that will table them (or get tabled by them), and not something that 'denies' them certain aspects or phases of the game.
After all, they are new players, so it should be a good looking army, but one that is fun to play against and shows them all different aspects of the game, so they can learn what they like.

Since I haven't played AoS yet, I have no idea yet what the armies can do. But from a pure aesthetics perspective, I am really liking (in no particular order):

1. Idoneth Deepkin
2. Seraphon
3. Gloomspite Gitz
4. Kharadron Overlords
5. Sylvaneth

So I am looking for your advice. Other armies can be suggested, but no Stormcasts or Death, since this is what they play now.
Also, I am looking for an army where I could for example buy the getting started box and am somewhat balanced against their armies.
Not too powerful, not too weak, and most of all something that I can use as base for a new army (if that even exists. I doubt the getting started box even makes sense, it never did before from what I can remember).

I'm asking because I've had some experiences in the past with a new player (like 20 years ago) bringing lots of mages and foot elves, and the opponent who played dwarves completely negating his spells, and shooting him off the table before he reached him. So he literally didn't do anything other than just walking. Or a 40k game where one played elder, and the other played Khorne. The elder player just hid behind a terrain feature with his tank, coming out, shooting, and going back into hiding. When the Khorne player finally charged, and made a bloodthirster, the opponent suddenly had an avatar of khaine who oneshotted the bloodthirster. Games like this aren't fun for one (I'd argue both) of the players.

So I'm looking for an army to avoid these kinds of shenanigans, but preferably having some really fun, unique or interesting mechanics. Something like old skaven, where sometimes it goes really well, but sometimes you blow yourself up. (albeit a bit less turn 1/2 tabling either side xD). Something interactive or hilarious.

1. Idoneth Deepkin
2. Seraphon
3. Gloomspite Gitz
4. Kharadron Overlords
5. Sylvaneth

Of these my favorites are the Seraphon & Gloomspite.
These two forces offer a wide range of options units wise. You can easily scale either up or down as needed. And they offer multiple ways to build & play the armies.

* With my Gloomspite? I can build the classic goblin hoard, I can theme it (very effectively) on squigs, I can do trolls, or I can go with the spider riding goblins. And I can mix the themes together effectively. and if you avoid using the Mangler Squig at low lv games there's not much in this army that'd ever be considered OP.
Their start collecting box is...... meh? And not too useful if you envision a goblin hoard. You can do better putting a force together via regular kits.

*The Seraphron.
Much like the goblins, you've got 4 effective ways to build: Heavy on the big dinos (who doesn't like dinosaurs?), lizardmen warrior types, skinks (like goblins you'll need alot of them), & mixed.
Their start collecting boxes....
The Seraphron one is decent. The skink one? :( :( Sure, things you'll want, bundled together. But as a stand alone force you'll get wiped.

Agreed with above poster. Those armies provide large range and flexible book that gives variety of lists possible. Only thing gloomspite really lacks is shooting.

This makes me say go Gloomspite.

Why not Skaven? If you like those sorts of shenanigans, Skaven still has those features in it, and they play in all phases of the game.

I am a gloomspite player as well, and I will say it's a fun army!

Another vote for Gloomspite. Their models are pretty affordable, and there’s little stopping you porting over any existing Squitty Little Goblins in your collection, especially just for games against your mates.

And in terms of tactics, they’ve not changed much. Swamp them in Gobbos, then feed ‘em to da Squigs and Trolls.

Well all squig version is very viable now. Maybe most viable atm.and squig models are full of character. Only spiders are not that good atm though from the book

I have no idea how any of the armies play so I am going to comment collecting side of the hobby.

Seraphon range of miniatures is starting to show its age. Skinks and Saurus are almost 20 years old. Last wave of WHFB plastics is quite good but the fact that Seraphon have gotten zero new models during Age of Sigmar era leave us two options. Either GW continues to ignore them or that new range of miniatures is coming. Upcoming Lord Kroak could be a hint of things to come, or one-off release with no larger meaning.

Of the armies you listed, Idoneth Deepkin and Kharadron Overlords have the most consistent range of miniatures by being completely new. From what I have understood, KO can be pain to play against similar to Dwarfs used to be. I would be tempted to start Idoneth Deepkin, they look like fun to paint too.

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

And yes, the upcoming Kroak.

Of those armies I can only really talk about Idoneth. They are a fast moving and hard hitting army. The infantry is a bit of a glass hammer but the knights are actually very resilient. They don't have a lot in the way of synergy and shinnanigans. Basically their units come solid as standard and you don't get much in the way of buffs beyond re-rolling 1s and some combat/resilience benefits.

All their units are usable and solid choices although I find I only like to take one unit of namarti thralls because they need to fight first to avoid being devastated before they can attack. Other than that you can pretty much take what you like and have a decent army.

They have some nice army wide special rules - enemy always have to shoot the nearest target so you can screen your army with a resilient unit like ishlean guard (sword eels), maybe supported by a leviadon, and your fragile units wont get shot off the board. The tides rule also gives you some nice abilities.

The start collecting box is decent although the character wouldn't be a first choice for me - I recommend the king and the soulscryer who allows you to outflank units.

If you do go for Idoneth I'd really recommend investing in a magnetic case or building one yourself using an aluminium case and some sheet metal and then magentising the bases. The idoneth have lots of tassles and small contact points on their swords which will snap off in a foam case.
