I'm going to receive my first Infinity miniature hopefully this week in the mail after lurking in the news thread for years. Something that I've noticed lurking all those years is that conversion and customization is less of a thing for Infinity than in games like 40k that I'm more used to. I'm not saying that it doesn't exist by any means but rather that it's noticeably less common.

Is that mostly because the metals are exclusively metal and (mostly?) monopose? I know there is a strong competitive aspect to the rules but I don't see some aspect of modelling for (dis)advantage factoring into the decision when the silhouette system is integral to LOS. I'm old enough that when I started gaming single piece metal minis were the norm so it won't discourage me much in that regard personally but I figured I'd ask.

I think you see less for a few reasons

1) They are closer to true scale metal models. This means not only are you dealing with metal, but also very thin metal (at least until you get to tags and some bigger models). So by and large you've not a lot of room to work with things. You can bend an arm here and there easily enough, but you've also got far less room to rebuild clipped detail or to pin and hold things.

Yes it can be done, but its a lot harder than with a nice chunky marine

2) The game is very skirmish based so often as not you don't need 5 or 10 or 20 of the same model. As a result there's less pressure to customise and convert because by and large you won't get much repetition within your force. At least not compared to a wargame.

3) Because they've always had more guns than they represent on models and haven't always had optional parts for their models the community is more used to a less strict WYSIWYG style of models. That and a lot of variations are very slight, multiple guns at arms length on the table are basically the same sort of shape. So there is less pressure ot have everything perfect.

This works because, again, its a skirmish game so its much easier to keep track of individual models

The poses don't allow for it nor do the sculpts and you do not readily have spare parts.

There is a whole thread dedicated to conversions on the official forum so it is definitely do-able. Arm swaps are a relatively straightforward way to get different poses/ loadouts for the same unit without having to start chopping up/ re-posing minis. Like Overread says i don't think you see it as much in Infinity as you'll usually only have a couple of the same unit in a list unless you are running link teams. If you've already got a model for the loadout you want there isn't usually the need for converting alternatives, unless you are spamming particular units in your list.

True. I hadn't considered those two reasons. With a skirmish game where you typically don't have more than five of the same model at most (for the grunts in fireteams) the packs they're sold in have enough individual sculpts to scratch the variety itch between boxed sets and what you may have in a starter without repeats. I also forgot that they don't have a WYSIWIG rule iirc.

Yeah, the spare parts thing doesn't help. I wonder if home 3d printing will help alleviate that now that at least some factions have 3d weapon models available for free.

I've actually been trying to visit their forums this weekend but I keep getting a 503 error.

They changed their website, I don't know if that broke the forums or not. You could use reddit until it's fixed.

They're really nice models btw, some of the easiest metals I've put together. Compared to some others...

On the digital sculpts I agree 100%, some of, if not the best metals for ease of assembly. The hand sculpted, especially the older, ones they're par for the course to "oh god why?" (Looking at you 9th Wulver's with swords attached by 2 flat cuts at the wrists or held out by a single wrist with a shallow dimple.)

When did this happen? I've been trying to get on the forums for a few days now but have been unable to. Is this a website address that you or someone else can provide to access the forums again? Or is the forums web address unchanged and it is it a different problem? I've been getting conflicting reports on reddit with some people still being able to login & post while others are not able to.

I'm not sure when it changed, but last time I used the website(a couple weeks ago) it was Infinitythegame, now it's Infinitytheuniverse. I can't access the forums either. It could be unrelated for all I know.

Even this link does not work. I'm a little worried that CB doesn't realize that there is a problem with people trying to connect to their forum. Is there a way to contact them and explain what is happening in order for them to fix this problem?

I'm not sure what the problem is. The link works for me. Any chance you're trying from work and its blocked by your company or something?

It works now whereas before it didn't (this weekend until even last night). You just lucked out on the timing.

It could be a browser cache issue. Clearing the cache and trying again may fix it if you're still experiencing the problem.

For what it's worth, it probably was not a browser cache issue. Their forum is not the most stable of setups.

Sounds like they need to upgrade their BTS! Ha, noobie infinity joke.

I got my first Infinity mini yesterday and was test fitting it for conversions. I have to say that it's a lot smaller than I (unrealistically!) expected! Obviously I have only myself to blame but I subconsciously expected the new Knight of the Sepulchre to be ogre/ogryn sized based on how much it dwarfed the other minis in the set pics. I was quite surprised (ultimately pleasantly!) that it's probably "only" about the size of a primaris (or a tiny bit smaller). In the end, this actually works for my planned conversion as the bits I had hoped to use were mostly from 40k marine lines (both classic and primaris).

They did have a 4 day period (last weekend until Tuesday/wednesday) - site kept giving 503 unavailable errors.
It's been fixed now.

I've not had many problems converting infinty figures. If you are used to the clown-shoes proportions of GW models, you might have issues, but there are a pile of other makers out there that do slimmer 28mm figures that also do bits suitable.

Back in the mists of time and 2nd edition, I converted up a Wu Ming with HMG, a Shang Ji with Spitfire and an Aragoto hacker. The main problem was the lack of parts - a weapon swap basically meant sacrificing a model, and as for arms, forget it. Luckily most Yu Jing HI had similar armour on the arms, so it wasn't too hard to hide the differences. There's a few more models available with loose weapons or multiple arm options around now, though.

The metal they use now is amenable to careful bending - just as well, as getting the legs of that ninja on tactical rooftop to line up was really fiddly. The pain issue I fine is that it's hard to get decent leverage on such small pieces. I find it easier to pin them to the torso with a really long pin to give me something to work with before trying to bend arms.

I´ll admit, converting infinity can be a bit of a pain in the ass... but I quite enjoy it.

https://forum.corvusbelli.com/threads/conversion-thread-whatve-you-got-going-on.287/

There are 104 pages of conversions in this thread, I strongly recommend you take a look. It can be hard, but some of the results (mine included ) are awesome.

I bought my first few Infinity minis as singles on eBay, never really intending to actually get into the Infinity universe. I just liked a handfull of the minis. One of them was a Nomads Kriza Borac that was separated out from a box set (the one standing on an ammo crate).

...aaaand then I started collecting more and more of their minis, ultimately buying several starter and box sets, which eventually got me a duplicate of that same Kriza Borac miniature.

Since I'm not a huge fan of having duplicate poses within my ranks, I prepared for a conversion. I did some deep digging through my bits boxes, and I found a bunch of Gundam kit weapons in various scales. One of the smaller weapons ended up being a decent sized rocket launcher type weapon for this mini, so that's what I went with.

I wanted to change the basic pose, but I was in no mood to butcher those legs. And one of the other Kriza Boracs powered suits from a different box set is in a running and leaning forward pose, so I didn't want to duplicate that pose either. So I came up with the idea of putting something larger than the ammo crate under its right foot, changing the geometry and perspective of the pose.

Once I removed the crate from the foot (the right leg with crate is a single piece), I had to come up with something to replace it. Another crate? Boring. A rock? Nah. Oh, what's this?... A 1/144 scale Victory Gundam head leftover from a weapons set box? Sure!

So I got all the parts cleaned and assembled, and I did a bunch of tweaking to the arms and their sockets with some dremel work (using 0.093" diamater tip bits). Then I built a custom weapon from some other bits.

Once I determined the optimal position of the head to allow the powersuit's right foot to have the most contact area, I went about making a divot in the head in the shape of the footprint. This allowed for a solid glue bond, and also makes it look like he's crushing into the head. I then added a bunch of battle damage to the head.

I made a slight miscalculation, and the left foot ended up with a 0.050" gap between it and the surface of the base. But I didn't want to remove any more of the Gundam head for fear of losing some of the detail and the overall impact of it being the head of a substantially larger mech. So I found another panel piece (part of a foot plate) and sanded it down until I could fill the gap.

And in keeping with the rocket launcher theme, I added some ammo rounds the hip area of the powersuit. I think if I'm ever in a game where we're playing anime-style mecha, I might just use this guy as my mech.

(the one on the left is the stock standard mini, and the one on the right is the conversion)
