Didn't do a lot of console gaming then, but one of my university housemates managed to borrow a friend's PlayStation for a while and literally all we used it for was Colin McRae Rally. Awesome.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Though it is also my favourite game of any kind.

None FPS or RTS favourite games of the 90s is difficult because the 90s rocked for RTS in particular and all my favourite 90s games are of those genres.

feth yeah man, Colin McRae Rally was one of my favourite games ever, loved it.
And I guess I played a lot of Fifa 98 and Mortal Kombat on the sega megadrive ? Final Fantasy VII also pretty great, my only brief foray into JRPGs was final fantasy games.

Favourite Console game from that era - easy!
Jade Cocoon on the PS1
RPG game which was kind of like pokemon, only fewer monsters and more of a focus on its own story than collecting. Indeed for its time, it featured and advanced merging system whereby you could take two monsters and merge them together. This blended their element, their abilities, stats and their physical forms. Some could get really neat looking (others rather daft at times).
It was a linear story path and well written with some nice animated intro and overall a really nice artistic style to the setting and backgrounds.
It was a great game, a shame its fallen to the way side. I did get a PS2 sequel, but sadly whilst it retained some of the gameplay elements it very much lost the visual, artistic, story and almost everything that made the original game great. It was well put together and worked and had some neat ideas, but it just didn't capture the same vision as the first.

personal favorite would be Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the playstation. i remember visiting a friends house for our weekly warhammer game shortly after it was released and being annoyed that they were more interested in playing a video game than warhammer. after watching them play for about 15 minutes i was completely enthralled. i went out the next day and bought a playstation and the game and have loved it ever since.

The 90's for me was bracketed by Battletoads and Double Dragon 2**** near the start and near the end probably Zelda OoT and for a more obscure one, ReVolt (game where you race RC cars).
I didn't really play much in the mid-90's, owned a SNES but my parents never bought me games for it and what little money I had I didn't feel like spending on games.
****Technically came out in the 80's, I was playing it in the 90's

Wow that covers such a wide period..
Early 90s and 16-bit era I would say in no particular order, 'essential' games to play/try would be (inc. both Sega/Nintendo)
Platform Games: Sonic 2, Super Mario World, Revenge of Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes, Strider, Donkey County Country
Fighters: Super Street Fighter 2, Streets of Rage 2, Mortal Kombat 2, King of Fighters
Shooters: Super R-Type, Fantasy World, Gynoug/Wings of Wor, Hellfire, Thunderforce IV, Super Aleste, Contra 4
RPGs: Secret of Mana, Chronotrigger, Story of Thor, Final Fantasy 6,
Racers: Super Mario Kart, Road Rash 2, F-Zero,
Sports: EA stuff - Madden, Fifa, NHL + Sensible Soccer + NBA Jam + Speedball 2
Sure there are tons of good ones I have missed..
Ran out of energy for writing about 32-bit era

This Desert and Urban Strike I think were two of the best games of the 16-bit era. Recently revisted Desert Strike and it still plays pretty well today.

The 16 bit releases of a lot of Nintendos big franchises in the early 90s - super metroid, super castlevania, legend of zelda, etc.
A lot of the early 3d 32-bit era stuff is very rough around the edges without the nostalgia. Mario 64 is still a good one to pick up, some of the fighting games if you have a friend to play against (Bloody Roar 2 had some fun mechanics). Games like FF7 and Front Mission 3 if you have a lot of free time on your hands.

Not fps, impossible.
But a good runner up behind the fps titles, wave racer 64, demolition derby 1/2 and ridge racer 1.

There's a lot of games out of the last half of the decade that I loved at the time and I have an enormous collection of PS1/N64 games, but few of them have aged well.

Favorite game? I can't possibly narrow it down to just one, or even just a few. The only platforms I really played were the N64 and PC (we had a PowerMac at home and had lots of games on it). I guess I can name a few of my favorites from each machine.
N64: Super Smash Bros., StarFox 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, Star Wars Rogue Squadron
PC: Escape Velocity, Descent, Descent 2

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary. |
