Dunno if this is posted, had a check and couldn't find it. Vanguard sc + Impulsor, and Necron stff

So you're basically paying an additional $45 for the Impulsor over the older Start Collecting box. That's not bad, I guess. I just don't need any more Phobos.

I like the Necron box a lot. I can use more Immortals and Tomb Blades, and I don't have any Doom Scythes. Don't need an extra Overlord, but it's conversion fodder.

The SM box is just an upgraded Vanguard SC box, which is fine.

Ah. It is the monopose Eliminators* rather than the real kit. That makes a big difference.
*both non-sergeants are kneeling, and no terrain on the bases

Which means its the same sprues for the Infiltrators/'Incursors' as well, which IIRC means they're missing some of their gear options. Poor show.

Shadowspear sprues plus an impulsor. If you don’t have them already, not a terrible addition to an army. Adds a nice mix of tricks to your toolbox, some mobility and firepower.

The impulsor has no synergy with the units in the box, so it’s a little irritating to see here. Makes this a bad “Start Collecting” choice. But if you add this to a indomiunus (or dark vengeance) box there are some guys it can drag up the table. Makes this better as a “next step” expansion box.

One perk of the monopose infiltrators is the medic. Better choice for the unit IMHO, and not in the full box.

Pass for me personally, but not bad overall.

How does the necron one work as a stand alone vs. add on force? If I wanted to take the necron half of the indomonus box and work it up to a full army, is is a good buy?

I'm tired of seeing the Doom Scythe in every Necron bundle.

I'm sure when that article went up yesterday it said the marines box contained infiltrators OR incursors, which is obviously incorrect. If so, they've fixed it now, so that's good. *edit* Lots of people saying the same thing in the facebook comments, so, yeah. Good that they've caught it

This is precisely what I was looking at it for. I don't have the shadowspear units yet and an impulsor is a neat addition to carry some of the foot sloggers I have from Dark Imperium and/or Indomitus. On the fence a little bit with the phobos units though, they're cool but not sure I need more bodies than I already have for the force. With a discount these boxes are great value.

They really want rid of the Vanguard stuff huh.

It’s the only place to get the suppressors and the helix adept.

And honestly not a bad group of units. Might not be tournament level stuff, but adds a lot of options to a marine force.

And they all look pretty cool, but that’s highly subjective.

The AoS thread has prices for that stuff. Anybody seen anything on the 40k side? I can't wait to see Flayed Ones turn into a real horror show.

It's not like they have much choice if they want to continue selling that stuff. The models are (possibly unwisely) all mixed on one sprue because of the way they set up the original versus box, and since they truly seem determined to get rid of Start Collecting boxes on the 40k side, they need to shove them in the new equivalent format if they don't want a not-Start Collecting box to awkwardly stand out from all those Combat Patrols.

The necron combat patrol box feels like it’s intended to be a force multiplier for people who got the indomitus box, and in that sense it serves that purpose well. However, the point of the combat patrol boxes is not just to bolster the forces of players already in the hobby, but it’s also supposed to be a good box for new players to start out with as well. And in that regard the necron patrol box seems to come up short.

If we were to take the necron patrol box by itself and run it as is, would it make for a good unit list? From the looks of it, I don't think so.

The descriptions for a lot of the boxes on the GW website even say stuff like “Combat Patrol: Blood Angels will provide you with all the units you need to get you started!” (Direct quote from the blood angels one). Maybe I’m just reading too much into this, but overall I think that it’s a good discount box, just not a great combat patrol box to start out with if ya get what I’m saying.

Eh, I don't think being the second box to buy makes it not a "new player item". It stacks well with pretty much any of the starter products, whether they have Indomitus or the smaller recruit edition.

It does sounds more like a marketing issue as to how GW talks about the boxes.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.
