For a long time I thought that Dwarven Forge was too expensive and too focused on D&D.

However, my opinion has changed and like many converts I am very passionate about my new love. It is a love shared by my wife and we want others to experience the same joy we feel. Yet often when we broach the subject we hear the same things being repeated that we once said.

I have a lengthy blog post about our views on Dwarven Forge if you are curious….

But we would like to know what folks here think about Dwarven Forge Terrain in regards to their gaming. How many folks use it? If no, why not?

Well I haven't bought any in awhile. I got into their first and second Kickstarter myself. I certainly enjoy using it although transporting it can be a hassle. So generally if I'm doing a game with it its happening at my house.

The exception being if I'm doing a special session or a one off for fun I'll go all out and bring it out. Generally I just use a battle mat though as its easier to transport.

Used to be an impressive boutique product. Not sure what the niche is now when a 3d printer is under 200€ and will pay for itself in one week of printing dungeon tiles.

I have to admit dungeon building is not my primary interest in DF or gaming in general, not lately. We ended up getting some from a friend at a great price and we are trying to figure out how best to use it but what my wife and I love most are the caverns and the forest pieces.

The durability of the trees really convinced us to move away from the conventionally flocked trees we traditionally used.

As for 3d printers, whilst we have a couple of 3d printed pieces we still dislike print lines and DF’s Dwarvenite material is incredibly robust. Certainly more than any resin pieces we have, 3d printed or otherwise…. such as Tabletop World. I always get my hopes up for 3d printed pieces but invariably whenever I decide to buy a new piece it arrives and I feel disappointed. Purchasing, learning and using a 3d printer for our own use would require sacrificing a lot of time, money and effort that we feel we can better spend elsewhere.

Looks good. Looked at the price and lost interest.

The price is a high hurdle, especially outside the US. But once you get past the sticker shock the price might not be as off putting as you first think. How many times do you have to accidentally break a terrain piece before the durability of Dwarvenite starts to balance out costs? That was one reason we moved to DF trees. Sometimes spending less up front ends up costing more in the long run. An investment in DF terrain pieces can last generations and can run through various project interests.

I mean if you want to use it for wargaming you certain can. I mean its terrain. I've used to for small dungeons for Frostgrave.

For anything bigger, like the houses or the castles, even the woodland scenes it really starts to get expensive as it doesn't actually cover all that much area. If your making a quick side area for Relic Blade or Ranges of Shadow deep it'll work fine, but there are cheaper option available that are better suited for stuff you'd play on a 2x2 or 3x3 board.

There are indeed cheaper options but are all of them really that much cheaper?

Dropping a DF tree is probably not going to have the same effect as dropping a GW tree or traditionally flocked tree.

DF buildings and castles have reusable modularity to create different things. Today it is a tower, tomorrow a tavern, next week a fortified tavern that looks different from both the tower and the tavern. The value of that depends a lot on whether you Are OI with using the same tavern over and over.

It was getting my head around that which helped me to see past the sticker shock.

Yes, they really are that much cheaper .. and so far, my cheaper trees have bounced just fine....

Fair enough, if your current kit works for you stick with it.

My wife and I find DF trees work better for us than our Citadel trees.

And we like the burrows…

If people are curious about just how versatile DF can be for various builds, there is a great subforum of player builds on the DF forums. The forums there can be a bit challenging to navigate so here is a link to the subforum I am talking about.

https://dwarvenforge.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=13

Some of the builds on there helped challenge my own ideas on how to use DF pieces.

We have gotten our hands on more Dwarven Forge terrain and our opinion of it has only gotten better. We love this stuff.

If you are curious to read more details about why…

One question that keeps coming up from DF staff is what else can they make thatbpeiole would want. Is there something DF does not make that you want?

And, given their next Kickstarter will focus on city buildings…

Is there something about their buildings that you do not like? Something you wished they did different?
